Sorry but can someone please explain compensatory draft picks to me? Like how do you get them?

Having read some of Adams blogs in the past, he's the expert. Not sure many people outside the league have talked and studied it as much as he has, but here's my shortened take.

They assign 32 picks from rounds 3 to 7. Only 32 so some years teams go without a 7th they would have gotten in a year with less movement.

Must be players who completed the final year of their contract. No cut players. Movement from previous year's FA period determines pick allocation for the current year.

Free agents signed > Free agents lost = No picks.

Free agents signed = Free agents lost = Basically no picks. Small chance of late 7th, but not really worth going into.

Free agents signed < Free agents lost = Awarded up to 4 picks.

Round of the picks are assigned to players lost and players gained based on a secret formula that includes salary, playing time, and "postseason honors", whatever those are. Most people agree salary is the main component (Almost certain everyone uses Adam's research to arrive at this conclusion, and to arrive at possible average salary cut offs).

Once players are assigned rounds, they basically line up the losses versus the gains for a particular team and start canceling out players with like rounds.

Players gained can only cancel players lost who have an assignment of the same round or lower. A 4th can't cancel a 3rd, but it can cancel anything 4th and below.

If you have multiple assignments in the same round for players lost and one of them is to be cancelled by a player gained, the higher pick goes first.

I may not have it all down, but that's what I remember.

Very impressive. I stopped typing one sentence in.

That's too bad for us next year. We have six potential comp picks coming next year if that Bloggingtheboys article is correct. I still hope McClain and Spencer are resigned but if they aren't they could have potentially brought 5th or 6th round compensation picks next year. Getting a comp pick after rounds 3 - 6 next year will still be a big help and give us more trade options.

RB DeMarco Murray Eagles 5 $42 million $8.4 million Yes 3rd
RT Jermey Parnell Jaguars 5 $32 million $6.4 million Yes 4th
LB Bruce Carter Bucs 4 $17.1 million $4.3 million Yes 5th
DT Henry Melton Bucs 1 $3.75 million $3.75 million Yes 6th
LB Justin Durant Falcons 3 $10.8 million $3.6 million Yes 6th
WR Dwayne Harris Giants 5 $17.5 million $3.5 million Yes 6th

Yeah, I pretty much think Hardy will stay in Dallas with a nice, new contract if he plays up to his reputation and doesn't get in any more trouble.

Basically, if Dallas wants him, they'll be able to keep him. The Dallas cap is in good shape and will only be in better shape next year.

Players love it in Dallas these days. Best stadium in the league, smart, no nonsense coach, great defensive coordinator, high profile as you can get. Hardy won't want to leave as long as the money is close. Dallas will get it close if he plays well. They'll spend big on an edge rusher. They won't spend big on a RB though.

Yes absolutely true. Dallas has become a team that players want to play for. Just look at Adrian Peterson and Cromartie. I don't see players publicly stating that about other teams that they want to play for.

If Hardy has a great year and Dallas is willing to match any team in paying him, he's going to stay.

What kid growing up did not want to play for Americas Team? The big three to play professionally for are the Lakers, Yankees and the mighty Cowboys :D

Oh I did forget to mention Randy Moss. He so much wanted to be drafted by the Cowboys and dreamt of playing with a star on his helmet. His childhood dreams was destroyed when we selected Greg Ellis instead.

When he played against us he made sure we regretted passing him up in the draft

The moral of the story is childhood dreams don't die easily. If some of these kids don't get what they want, its gonna haunt us. We can only sign so many players.

An argument can be made (by non fans/haters etc) it would be a silly argument... But it can and does get made.

But in summary. You are 100% correct x3

Man, when Moss was motivated he was just unstoppable. Can you imagine him donning the Cowboys uniform, wanting to ever since childhood? We probably would have had him motivated a majority of the time.

I would have loved getting Moss that year. When I was watching the draft and Moss fell, I thought for sure the Cowboys would take Moss. That move alone, made it the worst draft I ever watched.

Wouldn't we have to wait until next year to say whether or not he would get a pick?

And then wait until 2017 to actually get the pick?

Almost correct.

It wouldn't be announced until the owners meeting in 2017 and then the pick would be in the 2017 draft.

Getting Hardy may delay the 3rd round Comp pick for Murray for a year, but adding Hardy to this Defense could be the difference in getting to the Super Bowl or not.
