The Way I See it…NFCE

The Division that has been slated to be the most competitive in the NFL is living up to the billing thus far in the 2006 FA season……..minus one team….The Cowboys.

In my opinion here is how they would stack up if opening day were tomorrow.

1. Washington Commanders: The Skins have improved their passing attack having Signed WR Brandon Lloyd, Sign Antwaan Randle El and TE C. Fauria. to complement Pro Bowl wideout Santana Moss.

1. Linebacker: LaVar Arrington's release leaves the Commanders looking for a starter to play alongside Marcus Washington and Lemar Marshall.

2. Cornerback: Last year's top draft choice, Carlos Rogers, is a keeper. Shawn Springs is still near the top of his game, but he turned 31 on Saturday and the Commanders need a big athlete who can be the third corner.

3. Offensive line: Depth is an issue across the board. When right guard Randy Thomas was injured last season, ancient Ray Brown was forced to take over. Now Brown has retired, leaving unknowns Jim Molinaro and Ike Ndukwe perilously close to playing a key role should a starter go down.

2. New York Giants: The most glaring needs for the Giants this off season were CB, LB, and a reliable backup for Tiki at RB.

Cornerback: Bringing in veteran Sam Madison is a good first move but have not filled the other two needs. There is still a good chance they may sign Arrington to fill the void at LB

With the improvements on O and with their steller D the Skins, at this time, should be favored to win the NFCE

3. Philadelphia Eagles: Going into FA the Eagles' top-three offseason needs were 1. Offensive line. Right tackle Jon Runyan is a free agent and probably won't be back. Left tackle Tra Thomas is coming off major back surgery and is a question mark. They need to upgrade at the center position. Thus far they have failed to fill any of the needs on offence.
2. Defensive end. The Eagles had just 29 sacks last season, which was their lowest total in more than a quarter-century. Rookie Trent Cole had five sacks at the right end spot. But he is undersized and isn't really an every-down player. The Eagles need to find a right-side edge rusher who can take the pressure off of LE Jevon Kearse.

With the signing of DE Darren Howard and OLB Shawn Barber the D is looking to be on track.

3.Wide receiver. Coach Andy Reid thinks '05 second-round pick Reggie Brown can be the club's No. 1 wideout. But they still need another dependable receiver.

The WR position as of today is still a major concern.

4. Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys' current top-five offseason needs:

1. Offensive tackle: This position was the team's Achilles heel in 2005. With left tackle Flozell Adams injured, they were suspect on both sides. Adams will be back in 2006. But they need an upgrade at right tackle where rookie Rob Petitti struggled mightily last season.

2. Safety: The Cowboys like Keith Davis, but they like him best as a special teams player. They will need a free safety to play opposite Roy Williams.

3. Linebacker: Dat Nguyen is retiring. The Cowboys need a replacement at inside linebacker. They also are looking for upgrades at outside linebacker. Ohio State's Bobby Carpenter is intriguing because his father played for Bill Parcells with the Giants.

4. Wide Receiver: Keyshawn Johnson and Terry Glenn are set for next season. But the end is near for both. The Cowboys need to get some new blood. They also need to add speed at the position. Glenn is unlikely to play a full 16 games two straight years. He has never done so before.

5. Place Kicker.

We have addressed one need, well maybe????, with the signing of Offensive lineman Kyle Kosier signed with Dallas, where he could play a number of positions. Kosier started 11 games at left guard for Detroit last season, but has also started at both tackle spots in his career.

I’m not trying to be negative folks just realistic. I have not hit the panic button yet, BUT, We have fallen behind the rest of the pack, we are not that far away……..so JJ, BP….Let’s get with the program asap.

yeah sure. Whine and cry. FA is barely 48 hrs old. And you might notice that outside of the usual suspects of Danny Boy and the Vikings, only the Browns have spent and signed a lot. there are a lot of teams that are NOT jumnping and signing every mediocre skill player in sight.

The longer you wait to make your purchase, the less items on the shelf to choose from. Plain and simple. It might sound cool, calm, and collected to say that we need to be patient, but the early bird tends to get the worm. We may just wake up one morning very soon to find the shelves are now empty.

I hope you have some inside info, but, there really isn't much left to be considered great news, unless you like a possible TO signing, which I don't.

Good post Cbz. I think you may be correct in your assessment of the division as of right now. Hope we make some solid pick-ups via F/A and the draft.

Another way to look at it ---we have a scout, a coach, and a owner who has
more knowledge(wheither we will admit it or not)then we do.. It just may be that they feel we have young talent, as good or near as good,as what is out there.
Everyone wants the big names, but if we have young player that have turned
the corner, save the big bucks to lock in some of the players that will cost
us big time in a few years. Us a little less money to upgrade or bring in lesser known talent (as we did): that may have also turned the corner and will only get better... it locks us in for a number of years with a talented team.
my wisdom for the day from someone not near as old as cbz40 or wise

No either he's waiting for that blue light special, for things to calm down a little, or simply being too cautious.

One thing for sure while the rest of the division teams are filling holes we seem to be standing still.

Am I being impatient? Guilty as charged.

You make some excellent points....

I'm all for resigning players such as Witten, T. Newman etc. let's get it done.

Upgrading with lesser know talent is fine also......but if we are going to compete next season we need a couple of playmakers on D & O.

The OL at this point is still very suspect. The S position question is still unanswered, the OLB position still a ?, as well a kicker we can have confidence in.

My point is that our division is and will be very competive.....at this point I feel we have fallen behind.

I wanna know what the excuse will be when Thursday has come and gone and Owens is now a Chief and we are still standing around with our pants down. Seems everyone is now saying our FA will be saved by signing Owens when it is no sure bet that will happen.

Well, I can't say that I disagree...

but..:D

I do have a problem paying a kicker 3 mill a year...that is just crazy money

2nd did this batch of FA's look that good to you... it did not to me

3rd by waiting around...you have allowed the Washington Commanders of the world to overspend on a less than ideal quality product and you still have plenty of the less than ideal quality products out there that will be going on sale soon...

IF <---notice it is big---

you believe that Dallas was 1 or 2 players away..I think some justification in overspending can be made..otherwise its just foolishly throwing money around...and imho Dallas is at a minimum 3 pieces away on def. FS/OLB/ILB and on Offense we are a T, C, G, TE, WR, WR and QB away and on ST a K away... The FA market held little value at those positions especially at the prices

 totally agree---just hoping not as much as it seems. The high priced guys
are not always the answer or final peg that teams think they are .. But
you do have to have something to plug the holes::D

I think the OL gets MUCH better when Adams returns and our C and RT get another year under their belts be it Johnson or Gurode or Pettiti/Tucker/Kosier/Rogers/whoever is around at the time.

Hopefully we will sign Ayodele and at least shore up one LB position.

Safety and Kicker, any vet will do. We don't need big names there.

It'll be okay......

Won't it? :pray2: :pray2: :pray2:

That I do agree with.

3 million for a kicker....I would, but if past history holds true I don't think JJ will.

As the spending spree fades into the sunset I do hope there are a few groceries left to fill some needs. Otherwise we better have a good draft.

Agree 100% with ya CBZ. Hell, I'm not ashamed, I've already hit the panic button! :laugh2:

Some of those NFC East signings may not pan out, but at least they tried. I have a feeling they'll end up like the Cowboys last year. While we struck out with Rivera, we scored big time with Henry and Bledsoe. I'd rather have Henry and Bledsoe, then no one at all.
