The Way I See it…NFCE
The Division that has been slated to be the most competitive in the NFL is living up to the billing thus far in the 2006 FA season……..minus one team….The Cowboys.
In my opinion here is how they would stack up if opening day were tomorrow.
1. Washington Commanders: The Skins have improved their passing attack having Signed WR Brandon Lloyd, Sign Antwaan Randle El and TE C. Fauria. to complement Pro Bowl wideout Santana Moss.
1. Linebacker: LaVar Arrington's release leaves the Commanders looking for a starter to play alongside Marcus Washington and Lemar Marshall.
2. Cornerback: Last year's top draft choice, Carlos Rogers, is a keeper. Shawn Springs is still near the top of his game, but he turned 31 on Saturday and the Commanders need a big athlete who can be the third corner.
3. Offensive line: Depth is an issue across the board. When right guard Randy Thomas was injured last season, ancient Ray Brown was forced to take over. Now Brown has retired, leaving unknowns Jim Molinaro and Ike Ndukwe perilously close to playing a key role should a starter go down.
2. New York Giants: The most glaring needs for the Giants this off season were CB, LB, and a reliable backup for Tiki at RB.
Cornerback: Bringing in veteran Sam Madison is a good first move but have not filled the other two needs. There is still a good chance they may sign Arrington to fill the void at LB
With the improvements on O and with their steller D the Skins, at this time, should be favored to win the NFCE
3. Philadelphia Eagles: Going into FA the Eagles' top-three offseason needs were 1. Offensive line. Right tackle Jon Runyan is a free agent and probably won't be back. Left tackle Tra Thomas is coming off major back surgery and is a question mark. They need to upgrade at the center position. Thus far they have failed to fill any of the needs on offence.
2. Defensive end. The Eagles had just 29 sacks last season, which was their lowest total in more than a quarter-century. Rookie Trent Cole had five sacks at the right end spot. But he is undersized and isn't really an every-down player. The Eagles need to find a right-side edge rusher who can take the pressure off of LE Jevon Kearse.
With the signing of DE Darren Howard and OLB Shawn Barber the D is looking to be on track.
3.Wide receiver. Coach Andy Reid thinks '05 second-round pick Reggie Brown can be the club's No. 1 wideout. But they still need another dependable receiver.
The WR position as of today is still a major concern.
4. Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys' current top-five offseason needs:
1. Offensive tackle: This position was the team's Achilles heel in 2005. With left tackle Flozell Adams injured, they were suspect on both sides. Adams will be back in 2006. But they need an upgrade at right tackle where rookie Rob Petitti struggled mightily last season.
2. Safety: The Cowboys like Keith Davis, but they like him best as a special teams player. They will need a free safety to play opposite Roy Williams.
3. Linebacker: Dat Nguyen is retiring. The Cowboys need a replacement at inside linebacker. They also are looking for upgrades at outside linebacker. Ohio State's Bobby Carpenter is intriguing because his father played for Bill Parcells with the Giants.
4. Wide Receiver: Keyshawn Johnson and Terry Glenn are set for next season. But the end is near for both. The Cowboys need to get some new blood. They also need to add speed at the position. Glenn is unlikely to play a full 16 games two straight years. He has never done so before.
5. Place Kicker.
We have addressed one need, well maybe????, with the signing of Offensive lineman Kyle Kosier signed with Dallas, where he could play a number of positions. Kosier started 11 games at left guard for Detroit last season, but has also started at both tackle spots in his career.
I’m not trying to be negative folks just realistic. I have not hit the panic button yet, BUT, We have fallen behind the rest of the pack, we are not that far away……..so JJ, BP….Let’s get with the program asap.
