AS long as slower more methodical doesn't include crawling into a shell and going ultra conservative (ala The Big Tuna) to preserve a 3 point lead. I want to get at least a 14 point lead before we slow the game down and then at worst keep pace with anything our opponents score.

I agree we are the 2nd highest scoring team in the league and I don't want to lose the aggressiveness this team is playing with right now. Offense job is to score points and they are doing that and I don't want to see that changing. As for the defense other than the Giants and the Pats we are not giving up a lot of points and have been winning the time of possession battles in games. Funny last season most complained about being predictable and too conservative and now they want to bring the reigns in on this offense? I don't think so

You know what.... if this was a buy or sell... currently I would have to sell it....

Our defense stops bad teams but the good teams score on us. THAT has to change. Its a little deceiving. 35 to Giants and 48 to Pats... even if you take of 14 from Pats game because we were worn down on defense and getting pushed around late... that still about 35 points a game allowed to good teams.

Bears - no offense
Rams - no offense
Bills - no offense
Dolphins - no offense
Minnesota - no offense

Good post, SB.

To me, it's like basketball. If you want to make your defensive numbers look good, it's easy -- just walk the ball up the floor and use up the shot clock on every possession on offense. In the NBA, everyone says the East plays better defense. And maybe they do, but the numbers are skewed by the slow-down game they play there. Having fewer possessions in the game for the other team means that naturally you're going to give up fewer points per game.

But that's a deceptive stat. You have to look at points per possession, or something similar. Point differential like you did is good, too. Take the Suns, for instance. At first glance their D looks terrible, but when you look closer, their points per possession isn't bad at all. They just give the other team a lot more chances to score than some teams do.

And like Dakota said, this is one reason Parcells' Ds usually looked good. Shortening the game on offense to protect the defense was huge for him. We're not doing that anymore, so we're going to give up more points. But it doesn't necessarily mean the D is worse.

I agree defense while they did some good things aginst NE for the most part they did not do a good job. I will say I don't think we will see another offense like NE during the reg season and NE has been putting up those points aginst everyone. I'll bet that the G-men do not but up 35 points next time around.

The Dolphins are 10th in the NFL in offensive points per game and 10th in yards gained per play. (We also played them before Ronnie Brown got hurt and Chris Chambers got traded.) And going into our game, Minnesota was ranked 12th in total offense and No. 1 in rushing offense.

If they have "no offense," what does that make most of the teams we haven't played?

We have played some weaker offenses, but overall, our opponents are averaging 19.35 points per game against everyone else, and that would rank 15th in the league.
