There's a reason range for kickers continues to increase

I remember that conversation after that game. But I also remember thinking, why is every other team fielding those snaps and setting the ball up correctly?
The home team has to actually pull a fast one before you get a slick ball like that.
But also, you have your starting QB playing special teams--the only team in the last 25 years to do that.

I dont agree with kicking balls or any pregame 'preparation" of balls.

Each game should be played with a new set of league supplied balls straight out of the box.
I'm not sure they've ever done that. QBs would have a fit.

That's what made 2006 so weird. NOBODY plays with balls right out of the box. They are slippery as heck

His choking D.N.A. was responsible for the other part.
Proven over and over a lie...but oh well.

Surely Bill could have had someone else learn how to hold the ball once Romo started. He should have been on the sidelines with overhead shots (no Surface then) instead.

Can you imagine the switching of gears that had to happen?

It's easy, fun..and really in the know to blame Romo. But Bill...come on man!

The crazy thing is that with the new kickoff rules and how these kickers are kicking you only need about 15 yards to be in FG range if the kickoff doesn’t land in the kicking zone. Don’t get ball in landing zone and the other team gets the ball at the 35. Get 15 yards on offense and you are set up for a 67 yard FG. There are probably at least 5 kickers that could make that kick right now. I’m not complaining because Dallas has one of those guys. But before all of these kickoff rule changes the team at least had to move the ball and earn the FG attempt.

one of the few times the rules were changed in our favor

The announcers talked about it and it was on all the boards ad nauseum

the only way a socalled Dallas fan does not know about it is pure stupdity

The league actually changed the k-ball rules the next season because of that play. I and others have brought it up here multiple times throughout the years.

Never understood how so few Cowboys fans know anything about this and write that play of completely to Romo choking.
Couple of things........
***The fact that the league changed the rule BECAUSE of the play......why was the reasoning swept under the rug? Why no one investigated whether or not the ball was actually tampered with and impacted the game's likely outcome?

***It's a dam shame how the play affected Romo's career.

you have to have a little luck to go all the way
Romo never had it
when you see players like Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson with rings, that says it all

I agree ......... I'm not sure some fans understand this. A LOT of small things and little luck have to fall your way. I have said many times that Tony Romo was one of the unluckiest QB to play the game.

It's hard to give the NFL any credit, but it's an exciting part of the game and just improves the quality of play. Adjustments will be made and receiving teams will have to counter it.

At the end of the day, no matter how the balls were prepped, most coaches are not trotting their kicker out on the field to kick 65 yard FG.

When I went to my first Cowboys game week1, I did the stadium tour that Saturday. When on the cowboys field, I actually walked back the distances Aubrey kicks alot of his FGs from, and standing 65-70 back and looking far out at the FG post is freaking insane. Seeing him do it in person was more crazy.

It also still takes leg power, range, aim and skill to even make those. I am not taking not a single thing from Aubrey. What he does is still freaking impressive.
Seems like 60+ is now the new challenge and what will separate the good kickers from the great ones. Aubrey is a great one.

For everything concerning that, what did Romo or the Long Snapper have to say about the ball?

There were no rules broken. A brand new ball was taken out and put in the game.

Here's a pretty good article talking about some history of the k-balls.

https://popculturereferences.com/how-an-infamous-dallas-cowboys-moment-led-to-an-nfl-rule-change/

From the article.

Longtime NFL punter (also, amusingly enough, a Viking) Chris Kluwe recalled the problem 10 years ago:

When they first come out of the plastic bag, yes they are absolutely awful. They’re super hard, have this nasty ball grease on them that makes them slippery, and usually the seams are protruding a bit so they’re more square than round. They’re terrible.
Now here’s some fun behind the scenes info most people don’t know. The quarterback balls are allowed to be worked in a week prior to the game because no one wants to see them flailing around out on the field; apparently that’s bad television. The kicking balls though? Up until 3 years ago you had 15 minutes before the game started to try to break in 12 kicking balls to something resembling an oblong.
The problem in the Cowboys/Seahawks game was that the ball that had come up in rotation by the end of the game was a ball that had not been treated much at all, and so it was essentially covered in grease, so Romo had a legitimate beef with the condition of the ball when he received the snap.

So the NFL changed the rule, and since then, teams have had FORTY-FIVE minutes to prepare the balls, and as time has passed, the balls have also reduced from 12 (six per team) to 6 (three per team), so it’s even easier to get the balls brushed into good shape.

Yup. That one play earned him an underserved label that still follows him.

My opinion is that is has become to easy and to much a factor.

The first thing I'd do as emperor of the NFL would be to make it harder.

The 50+ hard FG’s that were once a rarity in the NFL have become routine. Late game strategies have changed with the range for many kickers exceeding 60 yards.

The kicking revolution has sparked questions about whether the balls are juiced. Not quite but there is a major difference this year with having a chance to prepare kicking balls before game day and practice with same balls used in games.

Kickers are making 72.5 % of FG’s beyond 50 yards - nearly double the rate from 3 decades ago.

The change this year came after 7 teams made a proposal to reduce the stress on equipment staffs in game days. Before this season balls designated for use in kicking game were shipped directly to the officials and brought to the stadium on game day . Teams then had a 60 minute window to prepare 3 kicking balls, using only a wet towel, a dry towel and a special ball brush.
So no more sparkly ball which slipped out of Romo’s hand on that Seattle playoff game?

Soccer or real Futbol increased in the US. So finding strong leg kickers like a Morten Anderson is not rare. it is now common. Soccer style kicking enter the league in the 80's, the world cup did not come to the US until 1994, and the MLS started 1996. This evolved and revolutionized place kicking in the NFL.

The former no.1 pick of the MSL is the Cowboys All Pro place kicker. Homegrown soccer to NFL football placekicker from TX and the US.
