Yes, it might say that Davis has signed for 50 over 7, but in reality it is much differnt. I beileve he got an 18 million dollar bonus and if Im correct with my salary cap jargon, that would count about 2.5 a year for that. I beileve you break up the bonus over the length of the contract. In addition, the main point is, his base salary I can almost gurantee is probably around 800,000 this year, 1.1, next year, and like 2.5 the year after. When they reach this point, he most likely will get cut when the 7.5 million, etc etc come around. Yes, were take a cap hit but the cap will be so high by then it wont even matter. In turn the contract is basically 3 yrs for about 5 mil plus the bonus.

The same can be said about all high price free agents, this is the way all deals are structured. The money is in the bonus, after that is basically an aberration to what numbers are thrown out at you. Gurodes contract is basically the same way.

the problem with the contract is if he ends up being a bust, or gets injured... we're screwed...

this is generally why you don't see 7 year contracts.

He has never been to a pro bowl but the cowboys have huge faith in him... so much faith that they didnt trade for him when they had the chance...

nearly 3 million a year in just signinus bonus charge against the cap.

i heard he was making 24 million in the first 3 years, if that includes his signing bonus, the contract is heavily backloaded, so there is about 12 million in signing bonus in the last 4 years. i think he still needs to earn his contract.

Maybe I am dreaming but I thought someone said that the signing bonus can only be prorated ove five years. Is that correct? AdamJT13?

You're right, it is 5 years I wasn't thinking.
16 million dollar signing bonus prorated over 5 years is

3.2 million a year for the first 5 years of the contract.

Then I assume there is a roster bonus of about 2.5 million sometime soon.

So his contract will be about 4.5 million a year over 7 years, plus the 3.2 million signing bonus for each of the first 5 years, and probably 2.5 million this year. Conceding front or backloading in the contract that means he is getting paid (per cap charge)

10.2 million - year 1
7.7 million - year 2
7.7 million - year 3
7.7 million - year 4
7.7 million - year 5
4.5 million - year 6
4.5 million - year 7

Given that the contract is most likely back loaded You'd probably see the vast majority of his actual salary come up in the last 2 years, where there is no penalty for releasing him.

He is going to make 39.8 million in the last 6 years. With at least 3.2 million per year in years 2-4. Which accounts for 12.8 million of the 39.8.

Meaning his actual salary for the last 6 years will be 27 million.

I'm thinking the salaries will be something like this. Assuming there isn't an uncapped year, and following the 30% limit rule...

Year 2 - 2,181,990
Year 3 - 2,836,590
Year 4 - 3,687,570
Year 5 - 4,793,840
Year 6 - 5,869,570
Year 7 - 7,630,441

But that would still be assuming that we're paying him like 3.5 million this year in terms of salary, which is likely where i went askew.

Ill do the math again, but thats pretty much it.
