There are some things the Cowboys could do to combat the pick plays. The problem is that if they don't them incorrectly it could make things worse.
They could at times have the DBs on the 2 outside WRs swith-off coverage instead of playing straight man coverage. This would work best if the DBs could make that decision on the fly; however, they tried that in past years with Claiborne and Scandrick and it resulted in Claiborne always making the wrong decision and then getting yelled at by Scandrick. If both DBs end up covering the same player then the other player is wide open and it's a good chance of going for a TD.
The other option that I know of is tighter press coverage. The closer the DB is to the receiver, the harder it is for the receiver running the pick to get between them. The downside again is that if they do get picked then they probably have no chance to get back and make the tackle.
Obviously the other way to combat the pick plays would be for the Cowboys offense to use more of them. T. Williams would be terrific if he was getting the space that the Pats receivers get from the pick plays. He would be so wide open that even Weed could get him the ball.
In the play with Edelman in the article, I think Claiborne actually had the right idea but Corey White (I believe) just didn't follow through. It looks like he's focused on the backfield and as soon as Edelman sprints across his face he realizes that he's out of position and just tries to cover whoever he can. Mo drops a little too deep to have responsibility for the crossing route.
