They ran the pick play over and over

There are some things the Cowboys could do to combat the pick plays. The problem is that if they don't them incorrectly it could make things worse.

They could at times have the DBs on the 2 outside WRs swith-off coverage instead of playing straight man coverage. This would work best if the DBs could make that decision on the fly; however, they tried that in past years with Claiborne and Scandrick and it resulted in Claiborne always making the wrong decision and then getting yelled at by Scandrick. If both DBs end up covering the same player then the other player is wide open and it's a good chance of going for a TD.

The other option that I know of is tighter press coverage. The closer the DB is to the receiver, the harder it is for the receiver running the pick to get between them. The downside again is that if they do get picked then they probably have no chance to get back and make the tackle.

Obviously the other way to combat the pick plays would be for the Cowboys offense to use more of them. T. Williams would be terrific if he was getting the space that the Pats receivers get from the pick plays. He would be so wide open that even Weed could get him the ball.

In the play with Edelman in the article, I think Claiborne actually had the right idea but Corey White (I believe) just didn't follow through. It looks like he's focused on the backfield and as soon as Edelman sprints across his face he realizes that he's out of position and just tries to cover whoever he can. Mo drops a little too deep to have responsibility for the crossing route.

Denver is the team that started this crap and once the Pats saw that the refs do not consistently call it, they decided to do it as well. And its not just the Broncos and Patriots either, the Saints were picking the crap out of our LBs and not getting called for it either. I guarantee this is going to be a point of emphasis in the offseason, but as for this season it looks like the refs are going to minimally call it.

So the obvious question is, WHY THE HELL ARE WE NOT DOING IT ???

Simple: Garrett isn't big on deception, trickery ( in his mind), and gray area football. His platform and coaching philosophy is based on sound fundamentals and simple schemes. He wants his players to go out and beat the man in front of him. I don't necessarily agree because you have to do things to help your players get open, when they can't on their own due to lack of skill and talent. However, when all of our star players are playing we really don't need any pick/ rub routes. Maybe just 1-2 a game for fun lol.

In basketball...it is called SWITCHING the pick and roll....or pick and pop. I played with guys for YEARS who do not "get it" or who "hesitate"...and once you hesitate....that small delay is all the offensive player needs. Honestly, it is much easier to defend in basketball because the person with the ball is generally the person who a screen is being set for. But in football, when an offense has 5 receiving threats on the field...and you do not know who is going to be setting the pick.....that means ALL of your pass defenders need to be able to play it perfectly. And obviously we do/did not have enough guys who "get it"

Here is the ONLY thing I like about it. The Pats coaching staff look at their personnel....and they say "How am I going to get these guys open"? And this is how they accomplish it. They are not handing out 70m contracts to WRs. They are not hamstrung when a "star" WR gets hurt. The ball comes out quick, which helps pass protection.

In contrast you have my Dallas Cowboys. They did not want to pay for a "star" RB. Everyone in Cowboy Nation says "great, we are doing what smart organizations do" But here is the problem. We said "great"....with the EXPECATION that a professional organization has a strategy on how they are going to combat the absence of a workhorse RB. But we have no strategy. Our "plan" was to split the carries Murray got between 3 guys. That is not a professional strategy. That is something a kid learns in 4th grade. It's called division. And that approach is simple and easily picked apart in the modern day NFL with all the technology teams have. Or we do decide to hand out 70m contracts to a WR...and we don't move him around to get him the ball ala the Falcons and Julio Jones....or he gets hurt and our passing game reverts to Pop Warner football.

This organization has us running around complaining about this guy out and this guy on another team....because our team is built on having superior personnel...and that "lets this coaching staff off the hook" But organizations that are WINNING...have plan B ready to go when plan A fails...and they have plan C ready to go when plan B fails.......

Jerry better wake up and realize what he has in Garrett....because he has already proven he cannot win unless he has the best players...he drafted McGee and kept him for a long time "learning"...and I am not sure what took so long...there is nothing complicated about this offense. But after 3 or 4 years here....McGee could not even lead a team on a scoring drive in preseason....he was PAINFUL to watch....so again...Garret can't win without Romo....he could not develop a draft pick....he select Brad Johnson who sucked.....he selected AND retained Brandon Weeden who is NOT a NFL 4th string QB...so Jerry needs to really ask himself what DIFFERENCE does Garret make?

The Cowboys do run pick plays occasionally. There was a blatantly pick by T. Williams to get Beasley open in the Pats game and it didn't get called.

I've been asking this question for years.

Also, I've been asking why we don't spam screens to the outside when teams load the box.

WE run it 1 time to Whitehead the other day and it gets stuffed... So instead of trying that again we'd rather just line up and get stuffed everytime on first down.

WE need them.

In the playoffs everything tightens up and plays that are designed to get guys open are crucial.

We literally have to be way better than everyone from a talent standpoint to win the Superbowl with our current scheme.
