Things I'd like to see

Here are a few things I'd like to see this year. Other than WINNING, I'd like to see a few things different this year...

1) Snapping the ball at the last millisecond. The excuse of confusing the defense doesn't fly. It's hurts us more than it helps...

2) The defensive offside penalties. Our sack numbers shouldn't justify making these boneheaded penalties game after game.

3) Giving up quick easy scoring drives right after we take the lead. Can we please learn to drive the last nail in the coffin when we have a chance?

4) Playing down to competition..I know some folks will say the Cowboys aren't that great, so how can we "play down"? But, I hate it that we play like champs and put up 30+points against defenses like the Ravens, and then only score 10 against teams like the Browns...

5) GET AN IDENTITY!!! Are we an offensive juggernaut? A smash mouth, run it down your throat powerhouse? A shutdown, no non-sense defense? Do we have vocal leaders, like Brees, Lewis, Brady, etc, that plays with a chip and some swag? Or are we a quiet, confident team that comes in on Sunday and other teams know we are taking care of business???? I don't care which way we go, but we really need some type of identity..We have changed philosophies, personnel, staff, and ideas so much that we don't have a concrete idea of who we are...The Cowboys are known lately of being a team ran by Jerry Jones. (good or bad) that's it... He is our identity...It's time the NFL and all the fans know who the Dallas Cowboys are.

I like this list, especially the identity. I think this year we are really going to put out something special on defense.. all the pieces are starting to mold together and barring injury, we should be one of the best defenses in the league.

Fantasies are wonderful!!! I like to fantasize just as much as the next guy (or gal). But after being fooled so many times since "he who shall not be named" took over the decision making on 3/29/94 I prefer to see some evidence before I take the plunge again.

Fantasies are wonderful and the Cowboys being a better team this year can become a reality as long as they stay healthy.

The main things I want to see this year are improvement on the o-line, d-line, in the secondary (safety) and the schemes (defensive and offensive play-calling).

I might add:

--rushing TDs
--a pocket for Romo
--successful screen passes
--lots of passion and emotion

Interesting, I was considering asking if he had any sense of how the Cowboys ranked relative to the rest of the league on any of these items.

In any event, none of those things would be on my list. Give me a positive turnover ratio for starters, since that's something that translates more directly to wins.

i think the penalty thing could help, i think many of us are frustrated over seeing a 3rd & 1 turn into a 3rd &6.

I see what you are saying, but i have to hold on the penalty thing too.

He's actually talking about defensive offsides, for whatever that's worth.

1300+ yard Rusher this year

Fewer False Starts/Holding Penalties on Offense

Better execution inthe redzone. 7 instead of 3

No injuries on defense

First downs converted on 3rd & 2, 3rd & 3

I am pretty sure we already have an identity...as a circus sideshow. Have been for years. Thanks Jerry!

Odd.. I thought his list was terrific.. I would certainly agree getting a positive turnover ratio should be added as well.

Maybe, but I think Romo would disagree.

Yes.

3) Giving up quick easy scoring drives right after we take the lead. Can we please learn to drive the last nail in the coffin when we have a chance?

Yes.

I hear this talked about a lot, and it's nice to have an identity, but I think it's overrated. Teams don't win because of an identity. There are a lot of teams that have a strong identity, but they don't win much. Winning is a lot more important.

Of the things on his list, Getting Identity and Playing Down to Competition aren't measurable. So they carry no contextual value and they can't be correlated to winning or losing one way or another. Snapping the Ball Earlier and Defensive Offsides Penalties again, aren't provided in any context relative to other teams. They also happen to be double-edged in that you limit your ability to anticipate defenses and possibly slow down your own pass rush by eliminating the flags. If they're not actual problems, I don't see much point in addressing them at the expense of addressing things that matter.

Not Giving Up Easy Scoring Drives I can get behind. But that sort of goes without saying, doesn't it? And, if it doesn't, why isn't Get Easy Scoring Drives on the list?

I think I said "Here are a few things I'd like to see"....Sure, I could make a list 20 times the size of this one. I could even find some things that might be more important. I'm sure I could find some stats that you could compare to other teams and debate if they would help us win more games or not. I didn't want to write a book, and honestly was hoping everyone would add some of their own "pet peeves". We all have our own ideas of what we feel would help the team win more games. Ultimately that's what we all want, at least I hope.. So what are some of the things you would like to see changed???

Just give me the positive turnover ratio I mentioned earlier, and I think this team is competitive with anyone in the NFC.
