1. Everyone trying to justify not being active in free agency....all of a sudden we want to sign anyone and everyone left.

2. Year after year, the same people freak out over contracts and have no understanding how they work and how the cap works. They see 6 yrs, 108m total with $55m guaranteed and 25m signing bonus and so we get the following:

-we are stuck paying him 18m a year

-55m guaranteed plus signing bonus of $25m is $80m (no it's not, the SB is part of the guaranteed money)

-we won't be able to sign free agents for the next 5 years

3. I would love it if we weren't very active in free agency, other than retaining our own guys that we think we need. Signing the right ones. THere is no reason to think Romo won't be above average for at least the next 3-4 years...he has had some of his best years the past 2-3 and that is with horrible OL. Signings like Durant and maybe Moore are what this team needs. We don't need 5 year 50 million deals with outsiders every year.

Well, yeah, nobody here is as atute, capwise, as fellers like you.

I am one of those who wants an active free agency. Active as in seeking out the gems, not like those recent FA scrubs we signed who will back up our team of mediocre defensive players. (Lee and Ware, Claiborne the exceptions)
If you going to play FA, you gotta play to win, not come away with scrubs and aged players.
These latest acquisitions make me pine for the likes of Victor Butler, they are so 2nd and third-tier. I remember last year being hopeful about Pool and we all know how that panned out.

But . . . with the shortage of money, I look for the next significant announcement to be about our No. 1 draft pick (if Jerra does not play "football guy" and trade down) and what will we half then? The core of an 8-8 team, backed up by scrubs and led by a very rich QB who will choke ever time.

sorry to be a pesimistiic Paul but you can alway count on ol' gimme to give it to you straight.

BTW: we will draft a D lineman with our first pick. I know. But Jerra foresees Ware and Spencer on the ends and a "superstar" hole plugger in the middle. Aint gonna happen that well, but that is the mind of Jerra.

Not that it matters, but the haters are out in full force. Our team is getting trashed nationwide on every message board. Par for the course I guess. I predict we get the last laugh.

If by last laugh you mean hovering around 8-8 for the next few years, then yes. We will have the last laugh.

Tony Romo is worth the contract talent wise. The problem is that he will never win big enough here to live up to the contract. That will be because he will never have the team to win real big around him. It's the same problem he's had up till now.

OP would rather see us with Freeman.

Really?

I am 100% on board with us resigning Romo.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the best teams rarely dip into the hype of free agency. The Packers, Steelers, Colts for the longest time, 49ers, etc...most are built through the draft and with an occasional foray into FA for that one last guy or for the missing depth.

The teams like Miami that have brought in 4-5 guys that are top tier are usually the ones that flame out. Dallas has been there and done that.

At this point, there aren't a lot of "Great" players in their prime available.....there are a lot of bargains though. Durant was a good signing...young guy that is a starter that fills a hole. Allen might be a smart stop gap to help bring in Kiffin's defense. A guy like Moore would be an instant upgrade and not hard on the pocketbook.

I think this team is in a much better spot for the long term if we stick with Romo, clean out the dead wood and bad money like Free and start to build more with the draft and UDFA.

Hard to argue with that.

I love your positive outlook it is both refreshing and getting pretty rare on this board. We win and the haters will find something else to hate on bet on that. Romo is talented and needs more around him in order to bring us to the promise land. Troy would have done alot less in his time without the proper supporting cast on both sides of the ball. Sometimes that fact is ignored. We had a good signing yesterday.

You may be right.

What I find hilarious are people who profess their understanding while mocking others, when both parties are simply voyeurs of a game on TV that doesn't even show the entire field when the ball is snapped.

In the big scheme of things, I am woefully ignorant of what pro football is truly about.

But then so are the rest of the people who post on message boards.

I'm in good company.

It's fun as fan when your team is active free agency, but it's certainly not the difference between a contender and a non-contender.

If the Cowboys become a legitimate contender again, it won't be because they were active in free agency. It will be because their drafting and talent acquisition and development improved.

Good post.

I'll add that I wonder if some of these teams skip big FA deals is because they don't have the financial depth the Cowboys have or value profits more than another signing. So they play the "we grow our own" card when in reality they can't or won't shell out the dollars for reasons that are more financial.
