Think I know where we can pick up our backup nose tackle. All we have to do is watch/wait and POUNCE when he comes available. Wouldnt shock me at all to see Big Fred Robbins of the giants to come available soon by way of training camp cut. Nice player in the middle of the defense. The giants now have like EIGHT d.t's on their roster after the signings of Rocky Bernard and Chris Canty. This guy would be the perfect rotation guy behind Ratliff for a year or so until we can draft a replacement. Something to keep an eye on ;)

Playoff and superbowl experience. Wide body in the middle who may well flourish in the Phillips one gap system. Nice player but could be a progress stopper for the young giant D.T's considering they just signed Canty and Bernard. Think he is in his last year of his contract...may want to play over his head this year to gain one more decent contract. Registered 5.5 sacks each of his last 3 seasons. Nice size too... Some injury concerns going on with him but seems healthy now.

From Giants football blog....

Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News is reporting that DT Fred Robbins could get be a casualty of the Giants signing both Rocky Bernard and Chris Canty. Robbins is in the last year of his contract and struggled down the stretch of last year due to injuries. He is coming off of arthroscopic knee surgery and the defensive line is stacked. The Giants now have 8 tackles on the roster - Rocky Bernard, Chris Canty, Fred Robbins, Barry Cofield, Anthony Bryant, Jeremy Clark , Leger Douzable and Jay Alford.
Clearly Douzable, Bryant and Clark are the first to go but that still leaves 5 in the rotation. Canty could rotate in at end and possibly rove around like Justin Tuck, but even with a “you can never have to many pass rushers” philosophy this seems far to overcrowded. It is unlikely the Giants go to camp with all 5 tackles, and due to contractual obligations the most obvious transaction would be to trade or cut Robbins. Your thoughts on Big Fred ?

Ron Edwards could also get the training camp axe in Kansas city this year too. In fact I think its likely. He wouldnt be too bad backing up Ratliff, clearly better than what we have now but nowhere near as good as Fred Robbins.

Then there is the big D.T from Texas AM by way of Greenbay....Johnny Jolly. This guy was REALLY on the upswing in Greenbay until last season when he was caught in his hometown with a mixture of soda and codeine.Huge widebody/ Monster runstopper for the packers but in jeopardy of being waved due to numbers crunch at d.t and off field problems. PASS.....we just got rid of all the morons, no need to sign new ones. Shame though as he would seem to be a good fit from a purely football standpoint.

I wouldn't hate it, but they have to let him go first, and no one can want him as a starter. That might be the tricky part.

The guy always played us tough... I sure wouldn't mind him as a rotational guy

I think we could give him almost as many snaps as a starter gets if not the same amount. We could do this by giving him all the BACKUP snaps behind Ratliff at NOSE TACKLE when Jay needs a blow, Short yardage/goal line stuff in the 4 man line AND...by bringing him as a D.T on passing downs when we go to a 4 man line in passing situations. This would put him on the field quite a bit.

Fact is...we MUST bring in somebody of quality. HAVE TO. If Rat were to go down for an extended period we are screwed. Cuz lemme tell ya...to go with Junior "Ive never done ANYTHING in the NFL and never will" Siavii as our primary backup to Ratliff is pure insanity. Not saying it HAS TO be Robbins, but it damn sure better be somebody.

I would loooooove to have Robbins in the rotation. I would love to have anyone brought in really. How this position was not addressed this offseason is beyond me, but we do still have time. There will be a couple of guys available, but like Hostile said, we have to deal with teams offering starting jobs. I am terrified by our current backup nose tackles. Moreso than any other position.

Who else is likely to be released?

Ron Edwards of the chiefs and Johnny Jolly of the Packers, among others. Plus we can always count on some of the cuts that can be seen as a SHOCK that take place on other teams. Robbins would be one of those shocker cuts.

Another team would probably give him a starting role in a 4-3. That's why we won't get him if he's cut.

I heard he has knee issues and that is why they went and got FA's.

Hmmm, so a backup role that compensates him fairly may be what he needs. The switch to a 3-4 and being more of a plugger may not be so appealing to him though. Then again, may be since the pass rush entity to his game may be greatly affected.

He hasnt been cut yet, in fact he may or may not. One thing for sure though....If he is cut we will never know if can sign him or not if we dont at least TRY.

Lots of roles for him on this team. Role 1....as Ratliffs primary backup at nose tackle. Right there is a bunch of snaps. Role 2...As a D.T when we go 4 man line on 3rd and short or goal line...Theres some snaps. Role 3...as a passrushing D.T when we go 4 down lineman on passing downs. Theres some more snaps. Add it all up and he winds up with as many snaps as a starter. Always snaps available for good quality people.

LOL!...Something just came to mind. Im of the opinion that we lose NOTHING by replacing Canty with Olshansky. Think Igor equals or probably exceeds Cantys production at a fraction of a cost to us and considerable cost to the Giants. Wouldnt it be something if because of the Canty signing we ended up with BOTH Igor AND Robbins? LMAO... Talk about a MAJOR WIN!

Lastly....Lets think about this a minute. I know its not resting Ratliff, but OH WELL...LOL 4 man D line on 3rd and long. Spencer Left end, Robbins Left D.T, Ratliff Right D.T, Ware Right D.E. NICE. Spencer flying around left end.....Robbins, 5.5 sacks each of the last 3 years bullrushing up the middle, collapsing the pocket, nowhere for QB to step up into.....Ratliff as the quick penetrating right D.T, and Ware flying around right end as the premier passrusher in the NFL. Whats my prediction.............PAIN!!!
