Don't get me started. I hate the empty set because there is absolutely ZERO threat of running.
But the percentage
should be non-zero now, right? We have a QB who is a threat to run. Why not run a couple of QB draws from that formation to keep the opposing team guessing? A designed QB run tilts the odds in the offense's favor. On a normal running play, the QB becomes a dead player after the hand-off, so it's basically 10 (offense) vs. 11 (defense). However, on a QB-designed run play, you pick up an extra blocker because the QB is now a live player. I would think from that spread formation, keeping all of the routes on the outside, would open up the middle of the field for a pretty nice QB run.
Unless the defense has a spy (I didn't really see one on Sunday). And if the defense does then employ a spy, they've tied up a defender who might normally drop back in coverage. I would think this would be a pretty effective strategy, no?
Then again, what do I know?
