That's such nonsense. Even if Jimmy did have all the power as he claims, the owner has the checkbook. No one is signed unless the owner signs the check and not even lord jimmy could make that happen if Jerry didn't want to do it. So to try and pass off that Jerry had no say on the Haley trade, the walker trade, etc is just plain nonsense. Now I would agree that Jimmy had his say on draft day and player moves within the Organization. Which is why we wasted 60% of the draft picks.. Jerry would have been smart to limit his ability in that area because he sucked at it.
Amen. Many who were not around then and were not too observant, see Jimmy as a draft genius but he made lots of bad picks (Walsh being the worst). He just had lots of high picks.

Salary cap and Romo's contract make it very difficult, not to mention acquiring a guy mid season who has barely taken a snap since mini camp.

Don't hold your breath.

After the nightmare signings Ive seen the Eagles trade I have a hard time believing we couldn't find a way.

Trade him for a DE lets gooo

You're going to trade Romo. For a freakin' DE. The ridiculousness on this board truly knows no bounds. So, you're willing to throw away a SB opportunity just because. What if Dak got hurt? Just tossed away another season. Good job. Did you not pay attention to anything that happened last year?

I think Jerry was the person responsible for trading for Charles Haley, not Jimmy.

I think so too. That had more of a Jerry feel to it. Jimmy believed in bringing in players through the draft. And more importantly, believed in his ability to do so and develop them. High risk FA splash signings are more Jerry's thing.

So were not going to get a nice DE and round off this teams biggest weakness bc Dak could get hurt? Anyone could get hurt.

made that trade for Charles Haley and we never looked back. Its also what this team is missing more than anything. That stud pass rush RDE to take the defense to another level. Now we definitely need LBer help, but I am hoping that Smith can be one of those guys.

I've been thinking about this the last few years.

I thought Hardy was gonna be that guy.

I say we trade a conditional pick for Cameron Wake THIS SEASON (perhaps a 4th?)...Dolphins want to continue their youth movement and he's just the right type of player who could transform us from contenders to favorites to win it all...consider (71 career sacks):

And he wants out of Miami...

Seems like a dude who could play a situational pass rushing role...not a Haley but say a Jeffcoat? And with this D he can still bring it. Seems reasonable since many were keen on getting a Dwight Freeney before the season began.

It's a move I could see us making given our incredible start despite the pedestrian pass rush we have now...thoughts?

Yes, anyone can get hurt. That's why teams try to find good backups for starting positions. It's called "depth." If your current starting QB gets hurt and you have no viable backup, you throw entire seasons away. Again, 2015, anyone? I realize it was a whole few months ago. Maybe you should read about that season on Wikipedia or something, try and freshen up.

Dak will make an excellent insurance policy for Romo.

When is the last in season trade for a team that actually paid dividends? I honestly don't remember one. The rare big trade at the deadline in the NFL almost always ends up with an under performing player on the receiving team.

Romo had health issues long before 2015, Dak does not. You play scared, I want to win. You talk about depth, only one QB can play at a time and Dak is young and healthy; but what depth is really hurting us right now if anything. QB? Or DE? Get real

Why would they trade him? The just destroyed the steelers and have a very good pass rush...makes no sense they would subtract from an area of strength.

He isn't even starting, James Jones is. Plus he is 34, I am not sure he can even add much to this team at this point in his career.

All Jerry was, he was the checkbook. The only reason Jimmy agreed to coach the Cowboys was full control of the team and Jerry's commitment to spend. Jimmy made the trade, Jerry showed up at the airport. The End.

I posted this Sunday evening and for some reason a mod immediately moved it to the coaches/front office forum.

-------

More than any other Owner/GM Jerry has done some mid-season trades and some huge ones at that.

Exhibit A: Herschel Walker. October 12, 1989. This trade is an epic one that has been discussed so many times I won't review the details. This was Jimmy's idea but Jerry made it happen. Do make note of the date. This was an in-season trade.

-Exhibit B: Charles Haley, August 27, 1992. OK...the Haley trade was done at the end of preseason...but we'll call it mid-season for the sake of discussion. The Niners were tired of Haley's antics and looking to move Charles. Carmen Policy got first, second and third round picks from Jerry. Of course some argue that the Cowboys got Super Bowls in exchange for those picks. They Boys needed a bigtime disruptor and Charles was all that.

-Exhibit C: On Oct 14, 2008 Jerry traded a 1, 3 and 6th round pick for Roy Williams. Of course this one was a total mis-assessment of talent and need.

I'm telling you that Jerry is going to try to pull another blockbuster in the coming weeks to acquire a pressure player for the defensive line.

It makes total sense:
1. Jerry has a history
2. The Cowboys have a huge need. The pass-rush is a huge problem.
3. The payoff could be a Super Bowl appearance.

And I'd add a 4th reason it makes sense:
4. Jerry can reason to himself and to his staff: We hit a home run in the draft so we won't have a lot of huge needs next spring. It's as if we got two first rounders out of Zeke and Prescott and the team might have have a "redshirt 1st rounder" with Jaylon Smith. I can already hear Jerry talk about the deal with this exact language and justification.

Jerry also will justify to himself the over-spending that will be required. He's specifically said some of his best deals in business and football have been when he (seemingly) over-paid.

If you are a GM of a team with no real 2016 playoff prospects...and a good pass-rusher on your roster ...we are talking of a defensive end with a manageable contract...you can expect a phone call from Frisco, Texas. Jerry Jones will have his wallet open and be ready to make you a deal.

IMO This might be a time where Jones aggressiveness could be justified...if the player could deliver two or three seasons of high production.

Trade Romo thread in disguise.

I don't think it's realistic to trade romo. And it's very difficult to make any mid-season trade let alone one that involves players (and complicated contracts) for other players (with complex contracts.)

Salary caps make this 100x harder than in baseball.

If the cowboys are going to get a defensive end it will almost certainly be in exchange for draft picks.
