I posted this Sunday evening and for some reason a mod immediately moved it to the coaches/front office forum.

-------

More than any other Owner/GM Jerry has done some mid-season trades and some huge ones at that.

Exhibit A: Herschel Walker. October 12, 1989. This trade is an epic one that has been discussed so many times I won't review the details. This was Jimmy's idea but Jerry made it happen. Do make note of the date. This was an in-season trade.

-Exhibit B: Charles Haley, August 27, 1992. OK...the Haley trade was done at the end of preseason...but we'll call it mid-season for the sake of discussion. The Niners were tired of Haley's antics and looking to move Charles. Carmen Policy got first, second and third round picks from Jerry. Of course some argue that the Cowboys got Super Bowls in exchange for those picks. They Boys needed a bigtime disruptor and Charles was all that.

-Exhibit C: On Oct 14, 2008 Jerry traded a 1, 3 and 6th round pick for Roy Williams. Of course this one was a total mis-assessment of talent and need.

I'm telling you that Jerry is going to try to pull another blockbuster in the coming weeks to acquire a pressure player for the defensive line.

It makes total sense:
1. Jerry has a history
2. The Cowboys have a huge need. The pass-rush is a huge problem.
3. The payoff could be a Super Bowl appearance.

And I'd add a 4th reason it makes sense:
4. Jerry can reason to himself and to his staff: We hit a home run in the draft so we won't have a lot of huge needs next spring. It's as if we got two first rounders out of Zeke and Prescott and the team might have have a "redshirt 1st rounder" with Jaylon Smith. I can already hear Jerry talk about the deal with this exact language and justification.

Jerry also will justify to himself the over-spending that will be required. He's specifically said some of his best deals in business and football have been when he (seemingly) over-paid.

If you are a GM of a team with no real 2016 playoff prospects...and a good pass-rusher on your roster ...we are talking of a defensive end with a manageable contract...you can expect a phone call from Frisco, Texas. Jerry Jones will have his wallet open and be ready to make you a deal.

IMO This might be a time where Jones aggressiveness could be justified...if the player could deliver two or three seasons of high production.
In his very first eason as HC Jason Garrett publicly stated that they wont trade premium picks because it detriments value and dilutes future talent.

Jerry Jones demonstrated this vividly with Galloway and Williams.

An individual player never satisfies a need for a particular position. It means that the team will always one injury away from where they were in the first place.

Instead, you get multiple players that compete for time. This increases both players abilities in a continual basis.

Trading Romo would be plain dumb. When you have a surplusb of talent at a position you dont flirt with zero talent by trading one and xoping with a season ending injury the very next weekend.

Your point about an individual player doesn't make sense to me. If we were to add a strong defensive end, we would actually be strengthening the starter spot and *also* strengthening the backups. The previous starter gets bumped into the backup role. The second stringer becomes the third string guy.

I don't think I've ever before been in favor of "using the credit card" which is what these kinds of trades amount to. But you can make a strong case for trading picks in this situation. I'd only do it if the player had 3,4 years in his tank. Wouldn't want some 32 year old.

Trading Romo is a whole separate discussion and isn't relevant to this topic. This would almost certainly be a trade of our draft picks for someone else's pass rusher.

Rather stick with the draft for a good pass rusher next year. Won't have a chance at drafting Myles Garrett, but maybe could get DeMarcus Walker 6-3 275 from Florida St.

Walker already has 8.5 sacks, 3 FF and a blocked FG this year and had 10.5 sacks his junior year. I'd say he's developed a knack for bringing down QB's already.

He might still be there at #32. :)

I'm a big believer in youth, but if the Cowboys can get a proven DE who can really bring the heat....we are in the mix for a title. NOW. And next year. And maybe the year after that.

It's a gaping hole in our roster as it stands now. Finding such a player at the bottom of the first or bottom of the second is a bit of an iffy proposition. And how long would such a guy take to develop?

All you can do is look for college prospects that have good production and can fit your scheme well. You want to see those prospects excel in games against good competition. Plays the game with passion and stays out of trouble. Pass rushers are all about getting pressure, sacks and having a non-stop motor especially in the 4th quarter. If I was looking for a pass rusher, I would take a look at his overall consistency on getting pressure and how many 4th quarter sacks in his college career...if any.
