Dallas CowboysRecord: 9-7
Coach: Wade Phillips Acquired Departed Free Agents Leonard Davis, T (Cardinals)
Ken Hamlin, S (Seahawks)
Brad Johnson, QB (Vikings)

Jason Fabini, T (Commanders)
Al Singleton, LB (UFA)
Tony Parrish, S (UFA)

Owner-GM Jerry Jones replaced coach Bill Parcells with former Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Now, Jones and Phillips will turn their attention to retooling a veteran playoff team through the draft. The Cowboys main concerns are in the secondary. But wide receiver cannot be ignored, as Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn are both entering their 11th season in the NFL.

If available, Texas’s Thorpe Award-winning corner Aaron Ross or Florida center field safety Reggie Nelson are Dallas’ best options. Otherwise, Texas safety Michael Griffin or USC receiver Dwayne Jarrett are thought to be favorites of Jones, who was able to fill most of his team’s primary needs during free agency.

Aaron Ross, CB, Texas

Strong Points: Good size and athletic ability for a corner. Quick feet. Instinctive cover corner. Good hands, strong ball skills and range all over the field. Fast but plays faster. Can carry his pads. Physical on run support. Fluid hips and ability to burst and drive out of his back pedal. Will get his hands on a receiver, but can do a better job of rerouting him. A competitor who is quick and sudden in his movements. Improved his tackling skills in 2006. Can track the deep ball and play it at the high point. Soft hands as a punt returner. Will be hired as a cover corner but gets ball-carrier down on support.

Weak Points: Will give up a big play at times after taking a chance on an interception.

Summary: Only started one season, but that is deceiving because of all the good corners that have come through Texas. Will contribute as a punt returner and on special teams coverage. Athletic and fluid in his movement. Competitive and confident player who can make the big play.
