This is how Romo 40 million guarantee is broken out

this 40 million is just guaranteed portion spread over two years:

* 20 million is guaranteed on March 14 2014 (third day of league year).
* 20 million is guaranteed on March 14 2015 (third day of league year).

Considering Romo has had two back surgeries in 7 months (may 22 & dec 28) there is real possibility that Dallas has to eat substantial part of this contract if his back regresses on any level or requires 3rd surgery. I believe that may 22 surgery was more than cyst removal due to long recovery period. What I don't know is how much of signing bonus is included in above guaranteed portion. Meaning what is cap hit if Dallas were to release him before March 14 2014 and cap hit if released before march 14 2015?

This is irrelevant because Jerry will restructure his contract and push a good chunk of that guaranteed $ back. I don't even think there is an alternative at this point to get out of cap trouble for next year. Jerry put his own back against the wall and back surgery for Romo was the worst possible scenario.

Romo can be released as a june 1st cut in 2015 and I think the Cowboys come out a net plus in the cap. We just need Romo to play one more year in 2014 if I remember correctly from playing around with overthecap.com.

This offseason we can cut Austin and Ware as June 1st cuts and be ok with the cap as long as we restructure Lee, Carr, Witten, and maybe another two.

yes, 2014 would be 40 mil in 2015 it would be 19.9 mil + any money thats moved down from a restructure. This might have been one of Jerry Jones worse football moves. They were so scared of losing Romo after this yr but coming to a draft with the QBs that will be available. I still think if Manziel falls to Dallas Jerry will jump on him.

I read that his 25m signing bonus and his 1.5m and 13.5m salaries in 2013 and 2014 were all that was guaranteed.

Tony's best days are behind him. I would ride him one more season and then have a young blue chip qb take over in 2015. We're not going to be very competitive. Not with JG as HC. Time to fix this cap situation and reload with young talent. It may take a few years but its better than what we've been doing.
