This defense has been pretty bad the last three games. Hold on a second there fella. This isn't another blast the defense thread. Just read it.

The Saints game. They just worked us up down the field and had every defender back on their heels on every play. Was it gonna be Bush on a screen, was it gonna be Brees throwing downfield, was it gonna be Duece McCallister up the middle? They had an excellent game plan.

You know what all that leads me to think? The Saints freaking offense is pretty damn good. I was right because they are the #1 ranked offense in the NFL right now. Yeah we were bad, but at least it was against the #1 ranked offense in the NFL.

The Falcons game. Michael Vick had a career game against us by throwing for 4 TD's. His freaking WR's finally started catching passes. He was crisp and clean on his passes for most of the game. They played their best offensive game of the season and still lost to us because the defense got it togther late in the game and shut them down.

You know what all that leads me to think? The Falcons freaking offense is capable of having those types of games and we got lucky they were only able to do it for 2 1/2 quarters. Yeah we were bad for a little while there, but at least it was against Michael Vick and we pulled it together soon enough to get the victory.

The Eagles game. This defense stunk. This is a fact and this cannot be disputed at all. But 23 points isn't 80 points. 23 points is 3 FG's and 2 TD's and it's also 1 point below their season average. The Cowboys are scoring 26 points a game and we only scored 7. So I guess if we scored our season average we would have won the game.

You know what all that leads me to think? The Eagles freaking offense is pretty good. They are the #2 ranked offense in the NFL right now. Yeah we were awful on defense, but at least it was against the #2 ranked offense in the NFL.

In closing. The defense has not played well against three pretty good offenses in the last three weeks, but does that mean the season is now over and we won't win any more games? No, this means we are going to have to play better on both sides of the football.

That loss to the Eagles stung me pretty good. I tore down a Christmas Tree and that's the first time in my life I have ever done that because of the Cowboys losing a football game. But I am not giving up on this team just yet. I can see the defense coming out this week and shutting down the Lions and gaining some confidence in the process.

Then the playoffs will begin and it's a whole new season. If our offense scores our average of 26 points a game in the playoffs I do think our defense can do enough to win in the playoffs.

I guess what I am saying is that I did buy a ticket for 'the season is over train', but I never went near the station and now I am giving away my ticket.

...and just what kind of offenses do you think we'll be playing in the playoffs? The 30th ranked offense? The 29th ranked offense?

The Eagles, the Saints, perhaps the Falcons are the teams we will be playing in the playoffs.

I understand your point, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned with our defense..........or lack thereof.

No excuses coming from me - they look like dung on defense.

the problem is that every team we play seems to play to their max potential against us, for a LOT of players and teams over the past few years, their game against us was their ONLY good game, or best game, or close to it.
That's not bad luck, that's a trend.

I agree the defense has been playing poor and if they continue to play as they have over the last few games it will be difficult to win.

Sometimes the best defense is a good explosive offense... if the offensive can get it together... we can help bail out the defense somewhat...

True but when you get to the playoffs your going to be facing some pretty stout defensive teams who can be hard to put up a lot of points. I think the defense has to step up and play better than they have done recently and I do think they can step up

You know what this leads me to think?

We can't beat good teams.

Thanks for the jolt of inspiration, but could you add a little about how we SHOULD play these three teams next time (should there be one?)

It might accomplish your appreciated cheer-up try.

PS You wrote a savvy post after the Saints game re the two separate half strategies of the Saints offensively. I went back and watched and dang, you had nailed it. Also nailed our two-little, too-late half time adjustment.

Good post. It's a week to week league now a days. Although you end up playing the creme of the crop, we are in that crop. (when playing well)

We made it to the tournament, it's not out of the question we can't compete in it.

I don't think the game against atlanta will be a cake walk for the igles. The Falcons have the capability to play a very good game.

Yah... true... true....

If we could bail them out just once... they might get their confidence back and NOT feel like the pressure is all on them

One of my big concerns right now is our lack of stopping the run, I know most focus on the pressure and I agree we need more pressure on the QB's but come playoff time you better be able to stop teams from running and force them in long situations.

Reality posted this in another thread... I thought it was worth mentioning again

Right now we are 9-6. Against teams that are familiar with us (NFC East and the Saints due to their coaching staff and a few ex-Cowboys players), we are 2-5. Against all other teams, we are 7-1.

I think what this means... if we can get past the less familiar teams in Seattle and Chicago and maybe only have to face one more familiar team... then we play an unfamiliar AFC team.... hey you never know...

Yeah... wasnt it our strength just a few games ago... are we overcompensating deep for the lack of safety execution???

We were one of the better run stopping team until recently. I think losing Ellis plays a part in that. Roy for what ever reason has not been coming up in run support quickly enough or taking a bad angle. Maybe some of it is just what you said overcompensating for the problems at FS. I do know this unit can play better than they have shown and will have to play better if we are to do anything in the playoffs.

I like the glass half full theory. Nice to read after a week of this sucks and that sucks. The endless #81 only sucks a little bit threads.

#1 offense, #2 offense......meh, it doesn't matter simply because no matter what the score is, opposing teams have all moved the ball with relative ease on this defense. If anything we've helped in their rise to offensive success.

This defense is not fun to watch. Not one aspect of it. It's a white knuckle ride. A saying of chants, waving of chicken bones, praying somebody does something. Somehow, someway. Please stop the run. Please defend the short pass and for the love of God summon up torrential wind gusts to give us a little edge with the long ball.

Someone play like this isn't our second game of the season. Someone go and get us Dat back on the sidelines to help Bradie with the defense.

DC....I wish I could see it as you do. I'm not buying it.
