This offensive line is sorely missing Bill Callahan

The Commanders have Kirk Cousins and no Dez. The Rams also have a stout defensive front. The Commanders dominated the TOP against the Rams and did well against the Dolphins, another line that is good.

Fisher just came out and said it was like playing the Cowboys OL. Callahan isn't just a great OL coach, it was his running schemes.

Callahan was the steal of the off-season for the Commanders. The only good move they've made in decades.

There's numerous teams in the pros and college that aren't missing Callahan.....his last stop, the Jets couldn't wait to get rid of him when his contract was up

As an OL coach they are... The Jets OL has been trash since he left.

And Callahan supposedly wants to just coach OL now anyways.

Why are we missing Callahan? Is it just because WAS looked good today? Or is there something specific we were doing under him we're not doing now?

The thing I've noticed is we are not getting big enough splits like we did last year. That is very important. Makes the DEs play wider.....creating bigger seems for the backs to run to. Last year our guards lined up so far off Fredrick that teams took the bait and tried to exploit those gaps to blow up plays....yet we would trap those guys cheating...and open gapping holes. Also....by getting wider splits...it's easier for our Gs to get to the 2nd level and cutoff the Lbers. Leary was really bad vs the Giants getting to the 2nd level.

It really doesn't sound like a lot...but it's the little things like lining up properly that makes all the difference....

After 2 games, it doesn't take a blind man to see the OL is not the same...whats changed....Garrett got rid of Bill Callahan and inserted an average OL coach.
The OL was responsible for 9 of the 18 penalties, below are Jerry Jones quotes after the game.

"I guess we're going to have to figure out what holding is," Jones said. "Not for them, but for the league to tell us, because was that a record for offensive line penalties?

"I heard Troy [Aikman] on television say it might be the worst game he had seen," Jones said. "Well, any game is going to be a bad football game that has that number of stoppages and penalties. We just need to just make sure that we got our techniques right and our teaching right. This is the same way we were doing it last year'

Nice story....

He's OL coach with the Commanders, not OC. And he had no trouble getting another job.

The reality irrespective is, he's one of the best in the business at the job of OL and a running game.

Other than that, he had a right to be P'ed that somebody was interfering with his duties and he wanted to leave when it first happened.

Right now we really miss him. He is a great coach when it come to small details. I was worried when we lost him that the offensive line would take a step back because every team he's coached has done the same thing when he left them. He was coaching the Jets line when they went to two AFC Championship games with Mark Sanchez as QB and then could hardly run the ball at all after he left and the same thing happend when he left the Raiders.

The biggest mistake Jerry Jones made was naming him offensive coordinator and then allowing him to call plays. We should have just left him as line coach and made him the highest paid line coach in NFLhistory. He would still be here if we had done that. Jerry ticked him off by taking away his playcalling duties. The Commanders may be for real this year.

As Alexander pointed out, McFadden was awful in a zone scheme with the Raiders. They were his worst years.

That is not necessarily a problem, but Pollack was the coach at the time. If he saw these things, why is McFadden here when he is the OL coach now?

Another problem is that he was being interfered with as play-caller. It was during his play-calling that they actually started running Dez with the drag across the middle of the field.

That being said, obviously with him as OC they would have moved to a West Coast philosophy and one can understand the complexities at the time as well by going Linehan while keeping Garrett out the play calling duties, but still involved.

He's an awful HC though, great OL coach.. As an OC, he had the Raiders pretty good, but very boring.

.he pouted here and wanted out of is contract after Dallas didn't give him the Offensive play calling role

He wanted out of his contract when he was given play-calling duties and Garrett kept interfering.

Nobody in their job likes such things and often times they leave because of office politics, especially if they are capable which Callahan more than was. Jerry didn't let him and let him play out the contract and they even offered him a new contract, but they had no control over his leaving.

Jason Garrett forced Callahan out...ticked off when the GM gave play calling duties to Callahan. Garrett got ONE successful season and everyone is drinking the HC koolaid.....This team is a mess 2 games into the season... Cant score in the RedZone and no rushing TDs yet.

A win is win no matter how ugly it is (2-0)....but ugly games get players INJURED

I'll have to go back and see if that's true. It's not anything that I've noticed. Honestly, the OLs looked the same to me. It's the turnovers and, yesterday, the excessive penalties that have been different. And the play calling, I guess.

Lots of factors.

I'm sure opposing teams studied film all off-season and looked at tendencies of Indiv. OLinemen. Philly has a darn stoudt front 7. Dez missing lets the S's creep closer to the box, These are the 1st 2 games most of the OLine has played together. Still think Zack is inhibited by his stinger--might be season long hinderance.. The other teams have adapted to what Dallas was doing under Callahan---and Dallas will make adjustments, but is a little slower in doing it......

The run blocking was there in the Giants game. Part of the issue is that both the G-Men and Eagles are heavy blitzing teams. And whether people like it or not, we miss Murray's performance on the ground. Randle and McFadden are leaving a lot of yards on the field. I see our running game a lot like the Packers' before they got Lacy. It's not going to be a power game, but it's still serviceable and with their ability to catch the ball, it's productive overall.

Dallas didn't run for 100 yards last year in either game against Philly, with Callahan. They have a very good front.
