Ok..

It's bye week and I have been studying this team a lot as have the rest of you.

Many want to draw parallels to the 90s team with the Triplets..

but the more I watch them..

the more I have flashbacks to the 1965-1968 teams.

Many of you were not around back then.

They used to call us Next Years Champions..

and for good reason

The team continually played well but could not win in the playoffs.

Therefore Next Years Champions stuck.

Now I'm going to draw some parallels to consider..

Back in '65 Meredith was only in his 2nd year but had been splitting time with Jerry Rhome..an aging but capable QB. Meredith was a gunslinging passer who kept the team loose and cracked jokes in the huddle

This is looking similar to Romo and DAK.

The RB was Don Perkins..a fire hydrant of a runner who ran the ball..blocked for Meredith like a bodyguard.

His best plays we're b/w the tackles and ran the delayed draw like nobody had seen before. He was as fast as Zeke for the first 10 yards and was just as tough to tackle.

Later in '66 Dan Reeves came along and added attacking the outside to the offense and will be forever remembered for his halfback pass..

today we have Zeke and Morris..a terrific 1-2 running attack.

Frank Clarke was a veteran TE whom Meredith leaned on for first downs..just like Witten does now.

Bobby Hayes was the guy who struck fear in the other team..a World Class track star who sometimes dropped the ball but the next play would make a spectacular TD.

Not unlike Dez Bryant.

The defense back then was often overwhelmed but Bob Lilley at DT.. Willie Townes at DE, Chuck Howley and Leroy Jordan at Lbers, Cornell Green, Mel Renfro in the secondary..the Original Doomsday Defense..

were not that different from DeMarcus Lawrence and David Irving on the DL. Lee and Hitchens at LBer, Claiborne and Carr in the secondary along with Jones..

All very similar to the 60's Cowboys.

The 60's Cowboys were also very young..just like today's team had a terrific young offensive line with John Niland, Dave Manders at center, Tony Liscio at T.

Tom Landry back then had only been a HC for 4 years around ''65 not unlike Garrett is now. Nobody thought Landry was brilliant but he was a grinder and was unshakeable..much like Garrett is now..

I could add more..but I would like some feedback on this.

If you were there and remember what I am saying..let's hear it. If you were too young..go back and do some research the comment.

Sorry for the length of the post..meh..we got an off week..I"m bored all ready.

Have fun.here's a video to get you started..

Is the film in slow motion or is that just how you old people moved back then?
Thanks bro.

You can go back to watching the Debates.

Come back when you actually have something to contribute for the rest of us.

Try to make it more than your clever one liners.

lol yeah they dont get it.
I was around back then, so we are getting up there.
I didnt actually follow the cowboys till 67 and even then didnt see every game.
I dont think they aired many home games, blackouts !

I was a AFL fan I liked the chargers, hadl? and oakland , Their games were on tv more than the cowboys !
And they had more passing , and remember " the bomb !"

I do go back that far. I'm not going to get into your subjective comparison here which we could see some parallel but reading thru see some factual errors.

Merideth was the first player selected in 1959. He didn't start until 1963. 1965 was Bob Hayes rookie season and when the offense took off with our first non losing season.

Landry was well know for his championship defenses in New York as DC.

Our defense with #1 pick Lilly was built much differently than this defense. By the late 60's were a veteran group.

By 1966 our 1st NFL title game with Packers our defense had been together several years. Merideth had been the starter for 3 years and Perkins a veteran also. They retired in late 60's.

Give the lad a break, he doesn't even know what film or a projector is. Born in digital age with iphone and all the rest of the fancy things out today. You bring up some very good points.

Was this truly the general perception of Landry at the time? I was under the impression that Landry was looked upon very favorably by his peers due to his time as the Giants defensive coordinator and even his days as a player.

Off-topic, I'm a 1965 baby who thought HomeBiscuit's comment was hilarious and not disrespectful. Video technology was what it was at the time and doesn't translate equally with today's video. It's virtually like looking into a time machine and players DO look like they were moving in molasses compared to what we see today. That said, I doubt he was being literal though. And folks as old OR older than me ARE from OLDER generations.

Yep..

I remember.

I was growing up in Dallas back then and we lived in North Dallas.

I learned by chance that our next door neighbor was a scout for the Kansas City Chiefs.

We had lived next door for years and I cut their lawn forever. I worked mostly with the wife as the husband was usually out of town.

I went in one day to the house to get paid. The wife was in the den working and she called me to come back where she was. I walked in and was stunned by everything in the den.

There was all sorts of signed pics by
Len Dawson and Hank Stram..signed footballs by Otis Taylor and whatever.

I asked about what I was seeing and said her husband was the head of scouting with the Chiefs.

I told her next time he was in town I wanted to meet him.

Which I did.

I asked him how he got into scouting and he said he started out as a high school coach and met Lamar Hunt one day and he got hired and it went from thete.

I was wide-eyed to say the lease.

And yes..

I remember 'the bomb'..a 60's term for a nuclear bomb adopted back then.

And nobody did the bomb better than Bob Hayes.

Players were smaller and slower in the sixties, I would whole heartily agree that the tempo was not the same. I find it difficult to compare and your memory is much better than mine during that time. This was a time when weightlifting was not required and nutrition was in its infancy, many lineman were less than 250lbs and a torn up knee/achilles was not an injury you came back from the following year.

So all that aside..

did you agree with my overall premise.?

I' m sorry my research department didn't quite meet your standards..

but I only pay them a burger and a beer every other Friday.

So occasionally they give me brief and often not completely factual info.

I will take it up with them Friday when I go to lunch.

I will be the only one there. You are invited..bring a tape recorder so you can fact check me.

So hopefully you agreed or no?

Yeah

Whatever.

I don't agree his comments were not vindictive.

He's a troll.

What can I say.

Man, I wish I could add something to the conversation but without "being there" it would be nothing more than going off of others' accounts and a stat line. I think the only way that most of us (as humans) can relate one thing to another is how "it felt". For a lot of us we can only compare it to the 90s teams (I became a fan in 80-81 so I missed out on all of the 70s glory and Roger's entire career :().

Thanks for your alternate perspective, as I assume since you brought it up, of that 60's squad.

Nice post and recollections . Fan since the 60's so remember ( fortunately :):) ) all of this. Move on the 70's and the Dirty Dozen comes to mind with several of our newer players starting to fill in those types of comparisons...
