Umm, did anyone else know it was a four year deal @ $19M? It said that it can be voided after 2008 based on playing time.

The Cowboys officially announced the signing of Zach Thomas, and released the man who gave Thomas a concussion when the Cowboys played in Miami last September, fullback Oliver Hoyte.

We've already reported the Thomas stuff - he'll get at least $2 million this year in signing bonus and base salary and the chance to earn another $1 million in incentives. UPDATE: Thomas received a four-year deal worth nearly $19 million, but it can be voided after the 2008 season based on Thomas' playing time. Thomas' '08 cap number will be $1.25 million.

As for Hoyte, he was slowed by a neck injury last year and was largely ineffective as a lead blocker. Had rookie Deon Anderson not been knocked out for the year because of shoulder surgery, Hoyte's playing time would have disappeared. Anderson will make a full recovery and is now the only true fullback on the roster. Hoyte made the Cowboys in 2006 as a linebacker but switched mid-season to fullback.

So I guess that extra money is all non-guaranteed base salary, then.

That has got to be one of the most worthless & unnecessary use of Cowboy's funds & cap space that I've ever seen. We don't even have room for the guy, let along NEED him!!!!!!!

JJ, sometimes I wish just about anyone else owned the Cowboys, but you. Get you head out of your butt & sign someone we actually need.....like a NT, CB, WR, etc. Since when is a washed up, 36 yr. old, puny LB on the Dallas wish list??

Maybe you could cut down on the exclamation points and hyperbole next time, and try understanding the structure and merits of the deal before flying unnecessarily off the handle.

It was widely reported that it was a long term deal that boiled down to 1 year at 3 mill

That would make sense. The $1 million base salary and the $1 million signing bonus prorated over 4 years adds up to $1.25 million against the cap this season.

Watch Ayodele and especially Burnett in coverage and it becomes VERY clear why whe got Thomas. If he can outplay Ayodele so be it but Burnett was as bad or worse than Reeves last year.

Well I'm not worried about it since they can essentially dump out of the deal at the end of the year if Thomas doesn't work out and it's not going to hurt their cap. I'm ok with that.

Can be voided based on playing time, so basically as long as he doesn't get hurt, he'll be on the roster next year as well?

From the wording, it doesn't seem like you can void the contract as long as he plays a certain number of snaps this year. You'd have to cut him.

Well I havent seen the actual contract but I'm sure Jerry covered himself in the event that Thomas doesn't give Dallas everything they're hoping he does so that he can remove him from our pay roll next year without taking a huge hit.

If healthy, Thomas would give this team a much needed boost of leadership. And while he's not the player he once was, he might be Dallas' best inside LB in 2008. In short, he's a big upgrade.
