Players have been getting into fights since the inception of the game of football. Not saying punching a teammate is something that should happen, but if you start taking players' money away for getting mad and punching each other, then you're going to have a lot of players losing money.

Especially during practice ..........now if you sucker-punched him at a mall or something, maybe.

The problem is that plenty of teammates have punched each other in training camps. It happens. It would be hard for the ravens to argue that the fight was so severe that it caused damage to the team that could only be resolved through his release. Unless there are prior incidents that led to this, the ravens would be hard pressed to argue a single isolated incident that normally occurs in training camps every year is conduct determental to the team.

They had nothing to lose by trying. They clearly didn't want him around anymore. They are hoping they can keep the 10.mil but if not, it wouldn't change anything.

This ........also considering they bypassed any form of punishment such as suspension and/or fine.

One of our teams best players ever, tried to stab a teammate.

I’m not condoning the action. But I do think there’s a pretty large gap between “he shouldn’t have done that” and “he no longer gets his GUARANTEED money because of that action.”

Exactly........."gap" the key word. In other words, why you didn't suspend him and/or fine.

Actually, it's the other way around. Teams rarely win. Thomas was never suspended by the team, and even then, we know precious little about the fight between Clark and Thomas other than the fact that Thomas punched him. All that Thomas' camp would have to prove is that another player on the team hit a teammate, and didn't lose their job. Without there being a suspension for conduct detrimental prior to this, the Ravens will be on the hook for the full freight.

Bingo!!!! Kinda like a supervisor needing a paper trailer to fire an employee who HASN'T committed a serious offense ( drugs, stealing, arrest, etc ).

No - whatever he makes with another team in 2020 is subtracted from the Ravens' obligation.

Would they still be on the hook for the dead cap hit coz I get the impression this the straw they're trying to void?

The Ravens are trying to recoup guaranteed money in their filing of, in effect, firing him for cause. That would impact what they are still on the hook for. First and foremost, the guaranteed salary of 10M is at stake, and that's what Thomas is fighting, and will likely win. For what has already been paid out, I don't see the Ravens winning that either. They would be on the hook for the guaranteed salary for 2020, and any unamortized signing bonus/guarantees already paid out.

Ok.......last question (lol), if they settle before a final ruling will they avoid cap hit ( $25M ??? ). In other words, let say they agree to pay him $7M in exchange for him dropping his grievance. Can they do this AND avoid the cap hit?

All that they would avoid would be the 3M not paid (his salary guarantee for 2020 is 10M. Settling for 7M would remove 3M of their obligation). Also, if any team were to sign Thomas, whatever they pay him would be offset, or deducted from the remaining salary owed. Now, what had already been paid out in bonuses would not apply to this, so they would remain on the hook for any unamortized bonus money.

Whoever wrote Gerald McCoy's contract should write Earl Thomas's. We got off that hook quicker than a fish on PCP.
