Leonhard-he is my 1a choice after Flores. He has turned jobs down in the past, so it is very possible he stays with Denver especially if Vance Joseph lands a HC position. His defensive influences come from Rex Ryan and Vance Joseph, both have been around Wade Phillips. Remember, Wade had that 1 gap 3-4 scheme here. Expect to see those 5 man lines.

Gannon-he is one I want to stay away from. From the Fangio coaching tree that has similarities with the scheme with just ran under Eberflus. A heavy zone, shell type of defense that doesn't blitz too often. Communication is paramount in this system.

Orr-he is an interesting candidate. Yes, Baltimore Defense has really struggled, but I really like his scheme. Comes from Wink Martindale, Mike McDonald tree. Heavy pressure scheme that calls for ton of man coverage across the board.

Jones-he has worked under both Zimmer and Flores with the Vikings. Another attacking scheme but plays more of a 4 man front.

Jones is a candidate I really like. However right now Leonhard is my favorite. I want to see us run a hybrid scheme, and I think either of those two are most likely to implement that successfully. I can see Orr on staff as a position coach for either guy

This has to be paramount in the interview process,

I don't care if they have to hook these dudes up to high tech lie detectors, and make sure they're willing to run multiples, do whatever it takes to take whatever they get on this roster for 2026, and run whatever schemes you have to week to week against whichever opponent you need to game plan for and not try to force your scheme in only one type..

That's what Matt did and I was shocked at that I knew he wasn't the best DC choice but I thought for sure that any coach who wants to keep his job and be successful would evaluate this week to week and run a scheme that worked better and I realized he was short some on the roster, but he just seemed to have a giant ego and unwilling to be flexible and we need flexible...

I mean can you imagine just hypothetically our OC and OLC with down four offensive lineman that weren't very good running zone schemes for three weeks forced them to run zone blocking schemes instead of just say OK I got better guys that can run man and run man while the other guys are out.

That's basically what was happening He just wasn't willing to stay with any kind of man or pressure front...

I mean the only place we have to go pretty much is up but I'm more interested in them keeping the scoring down and pressuring the quarterback more getting a few more short fields for our offense.

Dan Quinn's defenses may not be great but at least they had an identity they pressured you They either got a sack or forced turnovers they got more short fields and more scoring which take some pressure off the offense and that's what we need right now hell we need something to take the pressure off the field goals we could punt more if we could depend on the damn defense...

Defense was so bad it affected the rest of the team and the play calling the game plans it was just horror there was just no way To settle in and find any consistency anywhere..

I agree, Leonhard is on top of my list as well. If his scheme is anything like the one Wade Phillips ran here, we would be in real good shape as that was the last time we had a real, legitimate defense. Add in the Rex Ryan influence and those exotic looks and blitzes, our defense would be something to watch.

Plus the other long shot you know thinking outside the box and I don't know what schemes he runs but,

Banda has been the Browns' safeties coach since 2023, when Jim Schwartz replaced Joe Woods as the team's defensive coordinator. Prior to joining the Browns, Banda had only coached in college, including serving as defensive coordinator for a couple of teams.

Banda was the defensive coordinator and safeties coach for Utah State during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Before that, he was the Co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach for Miami (FL) in 2019 and 2020. He's a good coach and has gotten the most out of the Browns' talent at the position, and is deserving of a chance to be a defensive coordinator in the NFL.

Eberflus had many chances to alter his scheme, but refused to do so. He was hell bent on his scheme over his players. Hope is the Bears this season post Eberflus, not elite by any means, but not awful either.

Just get the right guy, and get this defense to be respectable!

My only thing with odd fronts is I don't want to see two 5T's with one stand up on passing downs

Interesting.....
Yeah the only thing that worries me about this is the weakest part of their defense was the back end correct I mean safeties DBS not great in coverage not great ball Hawks and I know they got a couple names but that's the whole point..

I mean that defense is good mostly because of the players and because of the DC but can the DB coach from the weakest part of that defense be any good as a DC??

It would be stealing proprietary information though They took Kellen Moore now we take their coach seems about right.LOL.

The 5-man front is alluring to me, but perhaps that's largely in part due to it being just about the only thing that ever worked for us this past season. Still, I like a deceitful defense — anything other than vanilla is what I want to see. The question is if we will have the players to run anything but a vanilla scheme.

Voch made an interesting comment the other day. He said Leonhard is who Schotty wanted to hire last year but Jerry and Stephen wanted more experience to balance out Schotty.

Looking at these requests ut does seem like Scottynus driving the bus.
