Thoughts on cuts, roster

I was gone the past weekend, so am just reacting to the roster and the cuts now, particularly the Aaron Glenn one.

One thought came to mind. For better or worse, this is a lot how Jimmy Johnson would have done it. I thought at the time when Jimmy took over he would have been well served keeping some veterans around to teach the young pups like Danny White, Randy White, etc., when he took over as coach. However, Jimmy had a plan in mind and knew although they might help you win games short term they wouldn't help you go to a super bowl. That was the bottom line.

Although we are in a much different situation now, I think a similar approach is being taken. We are not going conservative by keeping around guys like Aaron Glenn, Lousaka Polite. Or even very capable guys like Urban, but that have little upside. We're ruthless in our personnel decisions and on the plus side we won't get stale.

Guys like Glenn, Polite, and even Urban, might be able to contribute this year if there's an injury better than some of the guys on the roster, however, there is no upside. Glenn will never be a starter. Polite has had a few chances and apparently is not starter material. He's a good FB backup. That's it.

I was a little disappointed to lose Moore and I'm sure the team felt like he would make it through waivers, however, cutting him enabled us to keep guys like Stanback, Brown, and Deon Anderson.

I agree we are getting younger both by choice and injury. My guess is that Ellis is done and that we will depend on the others to carry the load. I would also point out that Newman is not young and that he was older when we got him, he may be in a state of decline, maybe one of those picks next year for an impact corner..

I agree. I'm sure that all of the coaches had input and discussed each player, cut and those kept, throughly. We don't know all of the reasoning behind their decisions. If we had sat in on the discussions maybe we would all be agreeing with every decision they made but we weren't. They have a plan and we don't know what the plan is so we make surface decisions. I would have kept Moore, Glenn and Remi but if I knew their rationale then I am confident that I would agree with their cuts. Some of these decisions might come back to bite them but if their decisions had been different, they could have potentially come back to bite them as well.

It is interesting to me how so many of these writers sit up on their lofty perches and look down on the sweating playing field and without any knowledge above the fans can be so condescending and superior in their attitudes and judgments.

Do I have concerns? Yes. But I also had concerns in 1994 and 1995. I am a full time worrier but when players get out of line and spout off, and most writers stay out of line, it bugs me.

The team needed a new direction, and new blood and younger, stronger bodies, you couldn't keep Randy White and Danny White around unless they started - which would have been a commitment to old blood and older, weaker bodies.

I doubt either of those guys really wanted to stay anyway - they were pretty much done and well past their prime.

I agree that a little veteran leadership would be nice, but hanging on to veterans that are well past their productive years for it actually works against the process of rebuilding.

Newman is likely not in a "state of decline". He's played very little football for someone his age. He's widely regarded as one of the teams best conditioned athletes. I think it's far more likely that he's just injured...one of those freak things that happens to football players of all ages...;)

Other than Glenn I was not shocked by any of the other cuts. I hated to see Glenn cut but evidently the coaches saw something in the other CB that they like and felt Glenn was expendable

if this turns out to be true, we are in trouble

I agree in theory that it is better to keep young fresh legs on the team that are still capable of growth and development. However, I think this move couldn't have come at a worse time. We are not sure what we will have in Newman this year. For that matter, I don't think the coaches really know either until he gets in a real game. Injuries also have the tendency to cause a player to react awkwardly in real time situations, which could lead to other injuries (I hope not). Then on the other hand, you have Henry, who always seems to have injury problems. So both of our starting CBs could be out at any moment. With that said, I would have been a lot more comfortable with Glenn on the roster at least until after the first game or two when we can see what Newman has to offer. Then if Newman played like it wouldn't be an issue, we could get rid of Glenn. Now, worst case scenario being that both Henry and Newman are out (which is more probable than most think), we would have Reeves and probably Jones or Ogelsby as the starting CBs...

Keep Glenn for only two weeks and u pay his full season salary. If he was on opening day roster, paid in full. Unfortunately, that was the straw that broke the camel's back...

I'm sure the coaches thought about this move before they made it. This is Phillips defense and I trust him to turn it around so I'm more than willing to give him the benifet of the doubt about cutting Glenn. After all he took over a very bad SD defense and turned them into one of the league best he must have a clue as to what he is doing.

This is kind of the bottom line.

No doubt the move leaves us scratching our heads a little, but there should be no doubt that the coaches made this decision carefully and after weighing all of the information - some of which fans have to realize they don't have.

Accordingly, we should give Phillips the benefit of the doubt until a time comes that he proves to not be worthy of it.

This makes way too much sense. :laugh1: That is like complaining about the cooking before you even taste it.

In the Giants game, I will be looking mainly to see what kind of pressure we get on the QB, as well as the play of our CBs. Hmmmmm...

I'm sure we see a lot of pressure by the Cowboys I also expect to see a lot of draws and screens as team try to use this aggressiveness aginst us. How Dallas handles that I think will determine how successful this defensive unit is.
