Thoughts/Opinions about last night's loss - a year away?

so your saying he should have faked going for the 1st down? or the td, dont remember lol.
only if the clock were running already could they have run more time off.
I will have to check that out now.
We still had timeouts left. On 4th and 4 Dan waited to see what we were going to do. Once we ran Aubrey on the field he called TO.

Horrible decision. We easily could have sat there tried to draw them offsides, take the time out or even the penalty. 5 yards would effect Aubrey at all.

Dak was pissed we did not go for it. He should have tried to talk Schotty out of it after the Lions called TO. Maybe he did, could not tell, but Dak was livid. I have never seen him act like that on the field.

My assessment coming into this season was this team is a year away. They got me excited with some big time wins, which still gives me hope moving forward. LB is in terrible position and OT is a problem. S isn't in great shape either. Fix these problems and you fix the team. How the FO does this while potentially retaining Pickens and Williams, I don't know. Seems like a really good time to go all in and open the checkbook for some solid starters in free agency.

And a really really good time to not draft more TEs and CBs.

The big time wins are overrated. The Chiefs are clearly not playing well at 6-6. The Eagles were hot early and were not playing well when we played them.

Like usual Cowboys fans are so desperate over the last 30 years, that any decent win and they think we arrived.

Optimism is linked to longer lifespans, and I like what I've seen in comparison to expectations. I like that They've built both interior lines and finally found a RB worth keeping. There's some talent to work with at corner. Safety and linebacker need work. They have the ability to create the necessary cap space to adequately address both positions, leaving the draft for OT, DE, and whatever else they need to address after FA. I see the plan, I like it. I'm optimistic.

And we also had the ability for several years and have done basically nothing.

Offense

-another slow start finally caught up to them. You cannot spot a good team a huge lead and expect to come all the way back.
-Very strange game from George Pickens, he seemed out of it all night, looked like he was playing half speed
-Rough night for Ferguson, fumble, huge penalty and that terrible call against him late
-Both Tackles had their struggles in pass protection, also Williams misses some blocks

Defense

-we all saw the stats, when they blitzed they generated pressure, when they didn't they struggled. As I said in the lead up, if you don't move Goff off the spot, he can kill you, which he did. Eberflus has been stubborn all yr not blitzing enough. It is obvious, they need more pass rush off the edge, but the DC has to generate pressure if it isn't working.
-Really struggled covering Gibbs as a receiver, he is a tough matchup where they just don't have the personnel the matchup.
-Goff was having a field day, with those quick, underneath passes without much resistance.
-Both our starting corners had their struggles. Not worried so much about Revel as he is still very green, especially in zone coverage, but Bland continues to have up and down play.
-Why was Bell covering Williams late in the game, why was Bridges doing the same? What is the love affair with Murray playing so many snaps?
-In my opinion, don't think Eberflus is the right DC to move forward with, but fear they are going to stay with him for continuity.
-This game finally exposed the defensive weaknesses that they have to address: Edge, LB and Safety. Bland also needs to play more consistent.

Special Teams

-Both kickoff and punt coverage was terrible, gave up huge field position every time. Giving a good offense a short field is a recipe for disaster.
-63 yard FG is unreal, he and the Jaguars kicker are on another level

I am not so upset at the loss as I kind of felt that this team is 1 good offseason away from truly competing. They have clear holes to address personnel wise and have to figure out some things schematically. Why do they struggle so much with the scripted plays to start the game? Eberflus doesn't have the Tampa Bay front where you can rush four and expect to get consistent pressure. Will he be replaced? Will Jerry open up his wallet and actually sign an impact fa starter or two? Is the franchise tag coming for Pickens?
We were capable of winning this game. We got out coached. They exploited our weaknesses better than we exploited theirs.

Coaching matters a lot!!!!

Our coaches are as inconsistent as our players.

If we had Al Harris as our DB coach these DB’s don’t play so da_ soft. Why didn’t Shotty give Steele and Thomas more help. Keep the TE and RB in to chip and just send out our 3 receivers. This would have gave more time.

I know we are all desperate for this organization to finally get over the hump but I dont see it. Does anybody truly think 31st time will be the charm? Jones family HAS to go, and they arent.
Here I thought I was the only one feeling that way...

In a way you've answered your own question....as to the coaching. You have to vary your play, we DID chip and Javonte gets so many snaps because he's our best blocker. Indeed, as a coach you sometimes want to tempt the oppositions Defense to pass-rush from a certain direction as the play's been designed with that in mind.

As for the Secondary situation most teams play majority of zone defense. It sounds great to press, but when our pass-rush doesnt 'get home' and Safety coverage is poor we're exposed to the chunk plays.

if we had gibbs he wouldnt be used the same way !! lol
We would throw to him except that flat pass or a screen, and he would just run into the middle on 1st down most of the time.
We have blue who could be used as a pass rec only and get the same effect but our coaches are too stupid.
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is exactly how it would go, throw short to him, dak would throw it late out in the flats, by the time he catches it, there's a guy inches from making the tackle!!! You're spot on!!!

After having seen this debacle of field position after kickoffs if the NFL is trying to avoid injury on kicks here’s a thought .

Forget this nonsense of landing zones and balls bouncing into the end zone as opposed to sailing into the end zone for goodness sakes .

Reward teams that actually score TD’s by giving the opponent the ball at the 30 . Make them earn whatever points they can get from that . If your like Dallas you kick field goals then your opponent gets an extra five yards they get the ball at the 35 . If it’s a safety of course rules still apply you’re forced to punt the ball to the team who scored the safety .

Do away with kickoffs all together it’s nonsense now . Punts still are in effect .

I think we are 30 years away....there is Jerry to get through and God rest his soul. then maybe another 25 years of Stephen. so be patient. your grand kids will see the success and talk about it, when their grand father told them fables about the great cowboys.
Please leave and come back in 30 years then.

And I know Detroit was a scoring machine Thurs so to me you try time consuming drives keep the ball . Hunter Luepke zero touches no passes in the flat nothing . And Spann Ford the dude at his size screams TARGET . Try to get him a pass where in the open field he can run over the safety . If of course the refs don’t call offensive pass interference on the dude for being extremely rough about it .,,,

No we haven't. This team has fielded weak interior defensive lines for decades and like clockwork, they've been dominated at the point of attack. The defense needs work at the second level, but the foundation is in place to slow the run and collapse the pocket. You can disagree if you want, but I see a reason to remain optimistic.

Turns out that to play good defense in the NFL you might need some LB's.... who'd of thunk it...
