Are you impressed with the Cowboys defense? Well, you should be. While people are attempting to downplay their performance that held the New York Giants to just three points, the level of play on Sunday night cannot be disregarded. Yes, the Giants offensive line is terrible. Yes, New York’s most explosive offensive weapon, Odell Beckham Jr., was not playing. Those two factors alone are going to make it hard for the Giants to win games. But we’re not just talking about beating the Giants. We are talking about shutting them down.

Everybody knew by game time that OBJ wasn't playing, but nobody was predicting that the NYFG would only score three points. I still thought they'd put somewhere around 20 on the board. My take is that this D isn't great and they will be scored on by the league's better QB's, but they're significantly better than a lot of people want to give them credit for being. Health permitting, they're only going to improve as the season wears on and that bodes well for future prospects.

There isn't a defense in the league that can stop elite quarterbacks on a regular basis.

See Giants versus GB last season in the playoffs.

Holding the Giants to 3 points is nuts.
To score 19 points and win comfortably is even wilder.

Just for reference, the last 5 times we beat the Giants, they scored 26, 28, 21, 21, 31.

Ball control, a run game, positive turnover differential, and an improved defense can take you far.

I predicted 3 points on Mark Holmes live stream before the game

I don't know where this defense is going to end up, but there were several things about it that made me happy Sunday night.

1) The return of a healthy Lawrence. This is a player who had to adjust to switching sides then came on like gangbusters in the second half of 2015. Last year's setbacks made it uncertain whether we would see that player again, even against the Giants' troubled tackles.

2) The class of 2016 looks legit. Jaylon Smith on the field making plays (including what should have been a forced fumble) and Tapper getting a sack just adds to what we got from Brown and Collins last year. And Brown and Collins don't look like they are going to take a step back.

3) Marinelli's in the zone. We've played a lot of main coverage the first few years under Marinelli because Claiborne and Carr weren't good zone corners. Marinelli likes zone because it usually creates more opportunities for turnovers and often makes the QB hold the ball a little longer, plus it limits big plays.

This doesn't include what this year's class of defenders might be able to add to the efforts. We saw Awusie step in without a noticeable drop-off, but we haven't seen Lewis yet and don't know what level Charlton's play will reach. Plus, we were playing without Irving, who flashed ability to be an impact DL, and Moore, who can at least be a contributor.

Even if the defense struggles early on it's going to be improved around Thanksgiving if our young DBs show any signs of being able to play at this level.

Demarcus Lawrence was the best DL on the field the other night.. I know he had easier competition then JPP but he was better.

David Irving is probably a better player then Demarcus and I really think Taco will be another David Irving type but it's going to take some time. I just hope it happens this year.

Even if we don't have a double digit cask guy, but with the rotation if we can get a few with 8 or 9, and few more with 5 to 8, then a few for from several other players. And they unit plays good to great. They will be fine. Just keep them rested for the 4th quarter as not to give up late game drives.

Just create turnovers too, especially in the 4th quarter. I don't care in they are a top 5 D, or even a top 10 D, as long as they are playing like one for playoff push time, as well as in any post season games.

Favorite play of the game about 10 minutes into the 3rd. Shepard caught an out about 8yards deep and Brown tattooed him, and then Jaylen stuck him while Awuzie came in and put the hammer on him.
Shepard took 3 hard shots in a one second span. Boom Boom Boom. I'm Sure Shepard was thinking WTH.
