If you go by total defensive stats, the Cowboys defense is 26th overall. Not a huge improvement over last year by first glance.

But the most important stat, points allowed.

Dallas is 10th in the league and 4th in the NFC. A much more telling stat.

This defense is improving every week under Marinelli.

we are probably better than the numbers, as we have given up a fumble returned for a TD and a pick 6. So our defense has actually given up 14 less points.

if you subtract those 14 points, where exactly are we ranked?

SF - 28 (21 d)
Tenn - 10 (10 d)
STL - 31 (24 d)
NO - 17 (17 d)

We have given up 86 points, but our D has only given up 72.......18 ppg.

Points allowed is lower, bending but not breaking and most importantly....we are getting turnovers!

You would also need to factor in whether any of the above teams have given up defensive points, themselves (for ex, didn't we have a pick six against Tenn?).

They are also making plays when needed, making stops when needed. Can't stop every offense all the time. But make some plays when needed, put the ball back in the offenses hands.
Something they could not do last year.

What I saw last night was a well coached defense. Players were scrappy and hitting hard like they had a chip on their shoulder. We kept their run game in check most of the night and kept Brees relegated to just short dropoffs.

People say that we don't have a passrush. We may not be getting sacks but Brees was hurried and harassed quite a bit last night.

This defense is certainly not like the defense we had last year and were getting better.

Also, a more stable, ball-controlling and a powerful offense makes the defense better as well......less pressure on them.
