Going into the draft one of my biggest concerns was that Dallas was going to waste a pick, a good one that is, on a TE.

I kept seeing people get all worked up at drafting one in the 2nd round, having visions of some dominant 2TE offense.

I hated the idea.

It's too far back for me to remember what my initial reaction to the Fasano pick was. But it's not that far back for me to remember how I felt when Dallas traded Fasano for a roll of used toilet paper and then drafted Martellus Bennett. He was supposed to be some matchup nightmare who completely opened up the field. Something Fasano couldn't do, supposedly.

I hated the pick. But, after watching the end of his rookie season where he made a great catch against the Skins I started warming up to him. I think I even predicted a breakout year his second season. Don't get me wrong, I still hated the thought process that goes into drafting a TE that highly when you already have one of the best TEs in the game. I was just liking the player at that point and so long as he satisfied Red's fix for having that second TE at least I wouldn't have to watch the team burn another top pick on a TE.

And then of course the guy turned into a complete non factor in the passing game and was basically a 6th OL for the rest of his time in Dallas.

When Dallas missed on the TE from Chicago I started getting pissed at the idea of even thinking they could take a TE again. This time around though, the idea of not only getting that 2TE set locked down was there but also the voices of people who think Dallas needs to look to the future because Witten has miles on the odometer were heard. IMO, that's not a good reason to draft a TE. You don't "develop" TEs. TEs are pretty much pre-packaged to play.

As the days moved closer, there were ideas of trading back and getting Fleener. I would have puked and probably tore my house apart.

And then it happened.

Day 1 without a TE.....sweet, I won't be going to Home Depot this weekend to buy supplies to repair my basement.

Day 2 without a TE.....granted they only had 1 shot and many of the TEs were off the board but I don't care, they played it smart and I'm digging it.

Day 3, 4th rounder without a TE.....ecstatic. I think I said a while back I'd be upset with a TE before the 5th (maybe 6th round). Either way, when that 4th rounder wasn't a TE I was pleased.

And then it happened, 6th round TE. Thank you.

So here's to you Mr. Garrett. You either joined a TE 12-step program or that TE Viagra pill you took wore off. Hell, maybe you just didn't like the one's available at earlier picks. I dunno and I don't care. Way you didn't is less of a concern me than the fact that you didn't. You didn't blow another valuable pick on a TE and I thank you for it.

Now if we can replace his need for a TE draft fix every year with an offensive lineman draft fix, we might have something that will pay dividends.

At first, I thought this thread was about me. :laugh2:

Wouldn't be the first time we got a tight end with this kind of last name. We signed Rodney Hannah as an undrafted free agent in 2007.

I like the UDFA from NC State, Bryan, if Hanna doesn't make the cut. Should be good competition no doubt.

Bryan offers nothing from a receiving standpoint...I don't see him having much of a chance of making the roster.

Well just to play devil's advocate...we don't know what JG would have done had we not traded our 2nd rounder.

this guy Hanna is a weapon with that kindve speed. clearly my favorite pick after Claibourne

I have a problem with slow TEs, and Bryan is offensive guard slow...

If all you ask of him is to be a third guard, he's serviceable... actually, he's somewhat more than serviceable, the guy can flat-out block... but he's not really suited to do anything else a TE normally does... same thing with Szczerba, the NFL is a much faster game than the college game is, and I don't think either of these guys has the speed to succeed long-term in the NFL...

OTOH, the Boys don't really have a pure blocking TE at the moment, so maybe there's a job for one of them this year... I just wish they'd targeted other blocking TEs like Garrett Celek or Brad Herman, guys with a little more speed than the two they settled on... perhaps they did, and those guys just wanted to sign elsewhere...

Anyway, while I like several of the undrafted rookie free agents the Boys signed, I don't care much for those TEs...

This guy sounds more like a WR/TE hybrid than an "traditional" TE. I watched several Sooner games last year and don't remember him. I'd bet anything we use him as a WR more than an actual TE.

Bryan is slow, but he's got great hands. Our 2nd and 3rd TE's primary jobs are to block anyway, and Bryan is miles ahead of Hanna as a blocker.

Bryan is Dan Campbell part II. I'd bet good money he makes the final roster.

Actually we do, they said they would have drafted Wagner, LB.

Just to cheer you up I think it was Spagnola in an interview on Saturday or Sunday that said prior to the draft the team were looking at ways of trading down to pick up Fleener.
