For the last three weeks this coaching staff has been praised on this site. There have been posts about this team perhaps being the best in the league. I have seen posts suggesting Garrett is finally getting it.
Then the Atlanta game.
What are the facts about that game?
Tyron sat out and a guy who couldn't make it as a guard between two pro bowlers is now on an island. He can't get to the apex of the defenders angle to slow him down. This player, as stated by this staff, is better suited for tackle. Yet rarely did the coaching staff move a player to chip the defender and give help to this 3rd round draft pick.
The team's bell cow running back is out of the game. At first it appeared the team would run the ball. Stay with the run. But quickly this eroded into a passing game, predominately. To further muddy the waters, the replacement back for the starter, a guy who has produced 1000 yard seasons is replaced by a second year player, for the most part. Only one series does the team show it can run the ball, with the former 1000 yard player. But that was far too late, and too little as they replaced him with a running back that had not played this season.
Then the captain of the defense leaves the game and the Falcons suddenly find their running game, gashing Dallas.
Even after watching this game, and it was difficult to watch. I recorded it and watched it after it was over. I still do not believe Atlanta is the better team.
So this is my opinion.
I am not a Garrett fan. I think hand clapping and excelling in coach-speak in interviews does not qualify him to be the leader of this team. He doesn't show me any creativity, or even a simple understanding of what he is seeing on the field.
I am an old guy who sits on my couch and wonders why the coaching staff did not make any adjustment to prevent the Falcon from assaulting Dak. Regardless of the offensive coordinator searching for something that would work, it seems logical the head coach would step over and make a suggestion of getting that tackle some help. Adjust the play calling so the defender runs past the play and throw back behind him. Roll out the quarterback with max protection at the defender to set up a safe pocket to throw from.
The Falcons were basically playing man. So where is the genius of the head coach to step in and offer guidance to the coordinators as they are having their arses handed to them?
To be sure, the failure of the player reflects on the coach. A coach can instruct the player where he needs to be. The coach and drill into the player the angle of attack, and the small tells which indicate the play coming.
But ultimately the player has to execute. So giving the coach a little slack is due.
But we are now at the end of the seventh season for Garrett. He took over half way through the 2010 season and we are now just past half way of the 2017 season. In this time I have not seen anything special about the team's preparation. Only seldom do we see a game plan which is so cleaver it confounds the other team.
Dallas lost because of injury and suspension. The next man up could not carry the water. But adjustments to what the Falcons were doing was non-existent for me. And while we can all blame Linehan and Marinelli, the guy who supervises those two, and should have a huge amount of input spent his day on the sidelines doing little to protect the primary asset on the field when the offense was in the game.
Now go out and have Dak injured, and see how quickly this team starts looking like the Giants.
I can understand this loss and I can handle it. But this is seven years of what we all have seen this season in one form or another. Two steps forward and five steps back.
I apologize for the rant. The combination of injuries, and the Zeke miscarriage of justice, and the ineptitude of Jason the sock puppet is a lot to ask of fans who have been around for decades.
