In terms of roster turnover, we are up two. Lewis boots McFadden off the roster and White has to make a case for keeping 6 CB's in camp and preseason

I'm very happy with what the team has done. If this group is not an improvement then it's the scheme and a new coach is needed as well.

I think it's just a tad premature to say teams should start taking note of our secondary at this point. We have Brown who showed potential last year, Scandrick who came off an ijury and might be on the decline, Carroll who is straight garbage..And a bunch of rookies. I like the talent and potential of our draft picks and Brown but it's most likely going to take a few years for most of them to be starting g caliber cbs on a good defense.

Hopefully they all pan out but I'm not going to expect huge things in their first year.

Sometimes I forget that our secondary are largely unproven rookies but on paper and according to scouting reports I think we have the best group in the league and we'll show that to the rest of world in just a few months. All the pieces are in place, Super Bowl LII here we come baby!

They do seem to have a much better focus on the issue that caused Claiborne to be a failed pick (Mental Makeup). They didn't even have direct contact with Claiborne before that draft (The scout's didn't think drafting him would be and option). They were not wrong about him having the physical ability to be a good CB. They completely missed the fact that he was too dumb and too weak-minded to ever be and elite NFL CB.

If you ever watched him in practice, even in his rookie year, he was always good in 1-on-1 drills against WRs. He didn't have to think about anything in those drills and his athletic ability could carry him. In real-games it was a completely different story. He was constantly confused and offenses would do things to specifically confuse him. If two WR lined up on his side, he would inevitably cover the wrong one because they would run routes to force a switch off. If he adjusted to the switch off, then they would go back to routes where he shouldn't switch off and he would keep trying to switch off.

For as good as our defense can be next year, I am even more excited to see how much they can grow going into the 2018 season. If we keep the offense in tact, 2018 could be an absolute dominant team on both sides of the ball!

Good things on the horizon.

The best thing about the secondary is the coaching changes that were made last year. They got more out of Claiborne that anything he had done in previous years. They got 6th round pick Brown up to speed quickly. They seemed to get the best from everyone. Wilcox became an enforced which he had not done in previous years. Carr was generally better (they moved him to the right side). They at one point had Leon McFadden covering the best WR in the league (Brown-Steelers) and it was not a complete disaster.

I love the cap savings that this young unit will provide. Future FA acquisitions and the resigning of our top O guys will be much easier. Would love for them to gell together anywhere close to as good as the early 80s 9ers who had a similar DB focused draft. Doubt there's Ronnie Lott in the bunch but even so, I really like this new group.

I hope the young guys turn out well. I was definitely tired of seeing Carr get beat and Mo was so unreliable with the injuries. I hope they can come in and play right away!

Key words: Speed and athleticism!

We are now younger (the average age of the secondary is 24) and hungrier on the back end. I absolutely love it.

I just hope all these DBs we drafted are better than the Dwayne Goodrich, Kareem Larrimore, and Mario Edwards draft where we also took a ton of DBs. At least people are talking about how decent these guys are. I remember in that draft, people were mostly talking about how we reached.

From that draft (and my mind may not be remembering things correctly) but Mario was a 6th rounder and he had a respectable career.

Actually Larrimore was a decent value in the 4th round– But he was a knucklehead.

Goodrich in the 2nd round was a bit of a reach. He didn't have the physical skills for the position.

This is the point I was going to bring up as well.

The defensive backs that had been punching bags for years earlier turned into capable players last year. I don't think it was conincidental that it happened the first year after the coaching change.

And if the veterans improvement isn't enough to convince, taking a rookie 6th rounder and having him be a solid, reliable player for the better part of the year should do the trick.

As much as any if these rookies' individual talents, my faith in this new coaching staff arrangement has me excited. The Baker-Jackson combination has worked very well so far. Much better than the job Henderson was doing.

Very good point, Stash...the staff is getting results. On subject, I can't wait until camp comes and the defensive line gets a dose of Charles Haley, Leon Lett, and DeMarcus Ware.
