Remember this guy. Let's hope our new picks pan out

Keep in mind the fake defensive coordinator Rob Ryan was pushing for corners... especially man-to-man corners, which helps explain part of the motivation of the team to trade up.

But then Ryan was gone, the new defensive coordinators were more interested in using zone coverage and Claiborne was spending an inordinate amount of time in the trainer's room.

This is the point I was going to bring up as well.

The defensive backs that had been punching bags for years earlier turned into capable players last year. I don't think it was conincidental that it happened the first year after the coaching change.

And if the veterans improvement isn't enough to convince, taking a rookie 6th rounder and having him be a solid, reliable player for the better part of the year should do the trick.

As much as any if these rookies' individual talents, my faith in this new coaching staff arrangement has me excited. The Baker-Jackson combination has worked very well so far. Much better than the job Henderson was doing.

I think this group of youngsters in the secondary will have much more of an impact than what many here believe.

I remember two undrafted free agents coming in in 1981 (Everson Walls & Michael Downs) and did a fine job... As starters.

Very good point, Stash...the staff is getting results. On subject, I can't wait until camp comes and the defensive line gets a dose of Charles Haley, Leon Lett, and DeMarcus Ware.

Agreed.

And while I didn't want Jaylon Smith or Charles Tapper heavily factored into draft decisions. Adding both players to the mix is certainly a positive factor. The team went 13-3 last year without a single on-field contribution from either player, so even the smallest addition from either or both has to be viewed as yet another positive for the 2017 defense.

I think we're looking at a significant turnover of this entire defense in just one year.

I sure hope so, and I now have faith that these coaches can teach and put them in good position to succeed. The 2016 results give me great reason for optimism.

They do seem to have a much better focus on the issue that caused Claiborne to be a failed pick (Mental Makeup). They didn't even have direct contact with Claiborne before that draft (The scout's didn't think drafting him would be and option). They were not wrong about him having the physical ability to be a good CB. They completely missed the fact that he was too dumb and too weak-minded to ever be and elite NFL CB.

If you ever watched him in practice, even in his rookie year, he was always good in 1-on-1 drills against WRs. He didn't have to think about anything in those drills and his athletic ability could carry him. In real-games it was a completely different story. He was constantly confused and offenses would do things to specifically confuse him. If two WR lined up on his side, he would inevitably cover the wrong one because they would run routes to force a switch off. If he adjusted to the switch off, then they would go back to routes where he shouldn't switch off and he would keep trying to switch off.
Mo's mental makeup didn't have anything to do with his play. His health is the reason he is no longer here. No need for revisionist history to prop up the young pups. When Mo played, he played quite well. I wish Mo had Carr's durability but alas he didn't and as a result he is no longer here.

The Cowboys drafted two cornerbacks Friday in Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis. They lost veterans Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne in free agency. The Cowboys signed cornerback Nolan Carroll II and safety Robert Blanton in free agency.

Let's just throw onto the departure group pile...Barry Church and JJ Wilson.

That puts the departure group at Carr, Claiborne, Church, and Wilson. Not only are they gone now, and a higher cap cost, but next season they will leave behind extra draft picks that will prove very beneficial at getting targeted players.

The secondary just was added:

CB Nolan Carroll II
S Robert Blanton
CB Chidobe Awuzie
CB Jourdan Lewis
S Xavier Woods
CB Marquez White

I tell you, that groups smells like press coverage and an increase in projected turn overs for Dallas.

Now, add them into who was already on the roster, and things look mighty engaging:

CB Orlando Scandrick
CB Anthony Brown
S Byron Jones
S Jeff Heath
S Kavon Frazier

This well could prove out to be the very best defensive secondary that this fan has seen in the past 20 seasons...in Dallas.
Certainly, there will be press coverage. But I think these moves were more about zone coverage than man coverage. Furthermore, turnovers are actually more likely in zone, since the play is not focused on man, but the quarterbacks eyes.

Making all receivers pay for any gains on the defensive side of the ball...will result in more turnovers!

I'll watch who the Cowboys play and how packages work out before declaring zone as the top dog this upcoming season. It may well have it's place...but mirroring the receiver and at a top shelf manner, still has the floor.

I just hope all these DBs we drafted are better than the Dwayne Goodrich, Kareem Larrimore, and Mario Edwards draft where we also took a ton of DBs. At least people are talking about how decent these guys are. I remember in that draft, people were mostly talking about how we reached.
Your the second person I've seen bring this up. And, if we sober up a little, I suspect we can all acknowledge that this defensive overhaul could certainly yield poor results in the immediate future. But to be honest, I don't see us being any worse than last year, which would kinda be a little encouraging because with such a young defense, you have to believe the needle will be pointing up as the season progresses. So while I don't see a dominating defense, I do see a defense capable of being opportunistic; kinda like the Saints a few year's back, where they weren't necessarily shutting people down, but they created so many turnovers that they ended up looking alot better than what they really were. That's the defense I think we all can hope for. And if the offense can pick up where they left off, it will force offenses to take chances they wouldn't normally take. This backfield has the speed and athleticism to make them pay, something that was sorely lacking from the previous group.

I agree that these younguns can't be any worse than the overall group last year that could'nt generate ANY pass rush or force hardly any turnovers. There will be growing pains, but I believe these guys can be at least as good as bend but don't break.

I agree with this. I think it's clear that the Cowboys front office realized that in order for Marinelli's scheme to be successful, we had to have guys who could excel in a zone. Several of those DBs were noted for being good fits for zone defenses. Rod's defenses were never known for producing picks with tight man to man coverage. More importantly it's another clear sign that the front office is giving these coaches what they need to be successful rather than telling them to make do with what they get.

If you follow this team closely, that has been the discussion for years. Claiborne and Carr are excellent man corner, but they struggle in zone. And Marinelli did his best to make it work and in many games got just enough out of this team to seal the win. Now that Marinelli has exactly who he likes, I suspect we will see some immediate dividends, albeit their ceiling as a group is likely years out of reach. This new, youthful, speedy defense has a Seattle feel to it. Not to the point that they create their own identity, but perhaps a year or two before they put it all together. I doubt we get that impression early in the year, but as the season progresses and the offense keeps putting the opposition on their heels, we could start to see something very special from this collection of youngsters.

I'd trade Orlando Scandrick, Kavon Frazier, Jeff Heath, Xavier Woods, a 3rd rd pick, and 3 million in cold cash for Landon Collins
