Trying to keep straight who is coming back when. I've arranged these in order of when they are likely to return to the field. Let me see if I have this right...

Tank Lawrence - He's baaack. Everyone hoping he gives a good boost to DL pressure.

Dez - My guess is he'll be back this week. If not, then the next week. Obviously a key piece of our offense.

Tyron Smith - Does he have a bulging disk?? Could be back this week, could be several weeks. Unclear how severe his problem is.

Scandrick - Really have no idea his status. Anybody know?? Brown has been a very impressive rookie, but if we could get the 2014 version of Scandrick, it would be a boost to the defense. 2014 Scandrick was the best playmaking DB on the team by a longshot. If you get Scandrick back healthy and playing at his customary level, you have depth in the defensive backfield and the dime defense gets stouter.

James Hanna
- Can come back week 7 I believe, which means first game eligible will be against Eagles. As far as I know, he'll be physically ready?? How much better than Swaim is he???

La'El Collins - He's not on injured reserve at this point. They're waiting to see if he can get better without surgery, so we have no idea if/when he'll be able to play again this season. Not sure if he is better than Leary anyway, but could certainly use him for depth.

Romo - He should be ready week 8 vs Eagles. Of course, there's the question of whether he should replace Dak. We'll have a clearer picture after Dak faces Bengals and Packers defenses.

Charles Tapper - Placed on IR Sept 28th, which means he'll be eligible to return week 12 or 13? His status is the foggiest to me. Have no idea if he will recover from his condition and be a player. Unlikely to play a down this season, hopefully will be able to eventually contribute.

DMAC - Probably won't be a factor this year, one way or another. Might get cut.

Jaylon Smith- Probably won't play this year. Who knows if he'll ever be physically able?

Randy Gregory - Not worth mentioning.

Anybody I forgot to mention??

T. Smith they are probably doing anti-inflammatories and counter traction he will be week to week for the rest of the season

Dez will be back this week, they need all hands on deck Cincy's Offense is due to erupt.

Scandrick who knows to much over compensating is probably the issue here

Hanna, who cares

Collins I would be surprised if he can comeback with any effectives without surgery

Romo will be back as the starter, I expect a week before the bye.

Tapper if it does not heal naturally there are surgical options which are just as effective as natuarl healing.

Jaylon will only be seen in interviews this year.

Randy Gregory, yeah really who cares.

A week before the bye for Romo? That means you think he plays against the Packers in 13 days?

To keep track of all the Cowboys players who have been injured or suspended that might return this season, you need a scorecard.

With the news that Randy Gregory’s suspension is now an official 14 games, it got me wondering just how many players Dallas might be missing right now who could still suit up for the team this season. Let’s take a look, in order of their potential return.

Potential Returns In Zero - Three Games

  • Dez Bryant. Hasn’t missed any time yet, but with hairline fracture of his knee, might miss up to three weeks, or even longer. Might also play Sunday. Today he received “great feedback” from Dr. Andrews.
  • Tyron Smith. Back tightness. Missed Bears game. Has not practiced this week, but could still return for the 49ers game.
  • Orlando Scandrick. Hamstrings. Missed Bears game. Limited in practice this week. Might play against 49ers.
  • Mark Nzeocha. Has not played since the pre-season, when he intercepted a pass. Limited in practice this week. When will he return?
  • DeMarcus Lawrence. Last game of his suspension is this week. Will return for Bengals game.
Potential Returns After Game Six

  • James Hanna. He opted to have knee surgery before the season and the Cowboys put him on the reserve PUP list, keeping him out of the first six games. The seventh week is a bye, so Hanna could return for the Philadelphia game. If he’s not healed by then, the Cowboys can extend his return for several weeks.
  • Darren McFadden. His offseason elbow injury did not heal through training camp, so the Cowboys opted to put him on the NFI (or non-football injury) list to start the season. He could return the same week as James Hanna. Might he also be traded?
  • Tony Romo. Tony was hurt in week 3 of the preseason, with a back fracture that was estimated to heal in 6-10 weeks. That would mean he might be able to return as early as the Green Bay game (week six), or not until the Eagles, Browns, or Steelers games.
Potential Returns After 10 Games

  • Rolando McClain. No one thinks Rolando McClain is going to play for the Cowboys again, but then again, they haven’t cut him. He’s on a 10-game suspension, meaning his first possible return would be game 11, at home against the Ravens.
  • Charles Tapper. The Cowboys put their first fourth round pick on IR this week, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s out for the year. The IR, designated to return rules have changed in recent years. Now teams don’t have to designate who will return. They can still only use the return on one player. Since the Cowboys did not put Tony Romo or La’el Collins on IR, at the moment, Tapper is currently the most valuable player on this list (Kellen Moore is the other one on it). As such, he must miss at least eight weeks. By my count, he could potentially be back for the 12th game, against Washington.
  • La’el Collins. At the moment, Collins is resting the toe for a couple of weeks, hoping to avoid surgery, which would sideline him further. This is very similar to an injury both Sean Lee and Terrell McClain have suffered, and it knocked them out for the rest of the season. It may still sideline La’el that long. But at this point we’re just guessing.
  • Randy Gregory. His suspension is now official at 14 games. That would mean he could be back for the Lions game in week 16. He does get to work out and attend meetings during this time, just not practice. So it’s difficult to project that he could be ready to play by the end of the season. Still, it’s now possible.
The Wild Card

  • Jaylon Smith. Is the nerve firing? Is he walking around without a brace? If he were, what’s the earliest he might be ready to play some football? Anyone have any information on this front?

When you look at this list, and then realize the Cowboys are 2-1 and favored to win this week on the road in San Francisco, it’s pretty amazing.

Among the injured players who have missed games or are likely to miss this week’s game (Dez Bryant), you have

  • #1 wide receiver (Dez)
  • Starting quarterback (Romo)
  • Starting left tackle (Smith)
  • Best defensive lineman (Lawrence)
  • Potential #1 cornerback (Scandrick)
  • Best middle linebacker when he plays (McClain)
  • Best future middle linebacker (Smith)
  • Potentially second-best linebacker when he returns (Nzeocha)
  • Starting left guard (Collins)
  • Leading rusher from 2015 (McFadden)
  • Best blocking tight end (Hanna)
  • Fastest defensive lineman (Gregory)
  • Rookie fourth-round defensive end (Tapper).

13 guys, six on offense, seven on defense.

Maybe “next man up” will finally work in Dallas.

Yes i do. Have him knock the rust off go into the bye and prepare for Philly. I just do not see them letting him knock the rust off against Philly.

I believe a healthy Lawrence, Scandrick and Tapper are the biggest timeline concerns right now. The defense line needs someone who can apply more pressure on the quarterback and having additional secondary support isn't a bad thing to hope for--especially considering some of the offenses coming up in the next few weeks.

I don't think there's much of a chance his first game is on the road in Green Bay either. That's not exactly a "knock off the rust" type game.

GB is weaker than Philly, I mean that could change but GB is not a juggernaut this year.

Jerrah Jones

He's about to have a heart attack over the Romo vs. DAK question.

GBs defense can rush the passer and the are tough at home. If you want to find a shake off the rust game, you wait until after Philly against the Browns.

I'd be surprised if Romo starts against GB. In fact, most of the chatter out of the Cowboys has seemed to be that the earliest they would put him back in there is after the bye, not before it.

Rest assured, we will be adding more players to this list, than are coming off. Such is life in the NFL.

Yeah, I'd def give Romo the Browns, not Philly. Let Dak continue his momentum.

However, with Philly being after the bye, they would prob want Romo to have the two weeks to prepare.

Who were the people that were saying how a head coach shouldnt be expected to win games when their star QB and their star WR go down? And look at all the other players that are out and this team is 3-1.

Looks like we got another erroneous statement disproved.

I agree. Have you heard any reports on Scandrick's rehab? Do you realistically think Tapper could contribute this year?

The latest I heard about Scandrick was the announcers speculation about his hamstrings during yesterday's game. I haven't heard a thing about Tapper. It wouldn't shock me that even a less than 100% Tapper could be a positive addition to this defensive line. Then again he could stink it up. Hope he gets well enough soon for everyone to find out.
