To get into the hall of fame, Romo will need a pay cut

Romo needs this team firing at all cylinders for probably another 4 years to get himself into the hall of fame.

Tony Romo is signed through 2019 or in other words for 5 more years after this year. Looking at his numbers he needs to play for at least another 3-4 years to put together some realistic Hall of Fame numbers.

The biggest concern more than the money is actually his back, but assuming this offensive line gets better, and the defense gets better, Romo isn't going to have to carry this team the rest of the way, they'll carry him. That is where the money comes into concern.

Romo's average salary is 18 million dollars. Tom Brady's average is 14 million. If Romo could take a cut down to 11-13 million, we could probably bring in a couple heavy hitters on defense, especially if we can return this team to glory and free agents just want to come here like they do with New England. (Revis costs the Patriots 7 million dollars this year).

It's almost impossible for Romo to get into the top 10 in yards passed, but with 4 or 5 more years, he could break into the top 10 in passing touchdowns. And he is already 5th in career QB Rating.

It'll be difficult for Romo to make it into the HoF and I can't see him doing it without taking a pay cut, not just because of the players that it'll bring in, but the attention he'll get for doing it. I'm not even sure 1 super bowl win will appease his critics.

Excellent thread and worthwhile to start talking about.

I agree with you and you know what - I think he will. I think it's in his nature, he's the same guy who changed a couples tire on the side of an expressway for gosh sakes. He's got midwest values and you are what you are.

Now, it's easy for us to say he's got enough money, I don't even blame season ticket holders for selling their seats to make a profit, but I think if this year plays out like it should and we go deep or dare I say win. He will do it.

Tom Brady also has his entire salary guaranteed into his 40's because he wanted to ensure he played his entire career in New England. So while that salary seems low for him keep in mind there are some concessions he's receiving for it, ones that we likely don't want to do with Romo's deal.

I also agree that romo is the type of player that will help the team anyway that he can to an extent to help this team bring in players and resign players to win.

If the team is playing well I believe he'll do what needs to be done to keep playing for us up to and including a big pay cut. IF the team is playing well.

Most of all I just really want the man to get a ring, few players have deserved it more.

I think all of these players have enough money, but to make the capitalist argument here, Romo would make a lot more money taking a pay cut and winning a super bowl or two, than he would maintaining his current pay, and not winning anything. You have to consider endorsements and post nfl career, all of which will be helped a great deal by having super bowl rings. You look at Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning and you see what I mean, both of these guys are going to be making millions post football.

These men are putting their bodies on the line, I don't blame them for trying to make every dime they can.

I understand the premise of the salary cut, and all other things being equal, agree somewhat. However, Weeden isn't the answer as Romo's backup, and Romo is one big hit away from IR. With the effort to rebuild the team with young players, Dallas needs a franchise quarterback in the wings. This guy should be ready to go in 2017 at the very l3ast.

I think he would be willing to take a pay cut, if not he will end like ware imo.

Murray
McClain
Dez
Melton

Those are just a few FA I can think of right now, for the Cowboys to stay competitive romo needs to take a pay cut.

I would like to have all 4 of them but only Dez and McClain are certain

OK I will say. I don't think Romo takes pay cut. He might extended the cap hit out for Dallas to 2050 but he isn't giving money back. He is playing at high level and just enjoy it. His back will tell the team when its time to cut him.

Yea, Romo needs Super Bowls (even appearances!) before he could even sniff the HOF.

Over the next 3 years, 15-17, he's owe 40 mill. So a bit over 13 a year. Those last two years of his deal were clearly fluff anyway.

Non issue.

on a side note I have been wondering, with Hoyer playing at a high level in Cleveland, maybe that makes Manziel trade target at a lesser price? could be traded for a decent pick then still follow Romo for a year or 2. bad idea?
