There are several ways to look at this:
1) use the picks to get players for the future in the draft
2) use the picks to get players this year in trades
3) use the picks to trade for more picks; which will have to wait until the end of the year to see what they are worth
I like getting more picks as long as they are at least third rd or better; because this team needs about a dozen better starters if we are going to actually contend for a SB not just the participation trophy division championship
However, one should always be shaking the trees and checking things out.
Some teams will be letting excellent players go due to cap problems; others will be changing coaches and the players there do not fit their system.
Five years is all you can expect to get from one player anymore due to FA and the CAP. So the idea of keeping someone their whole career is going to be very rare. Simple reality.
THEREFORE I would be OK trading for players now if it means building for the future; meaning 26 year olds and maybe 27 and no older. DEPENDING ON THEIR POSITION. Those positions like the O line where you can play well until 32 or so you can raise the bar a year or two. Others, like RBs, well those you pretty much HAVE to get in the draft as their shelf life expires so early.
BUT this means the boys have to change their ways: no more dumpster diving to fill holes. No more picking up injured players. Being very careful about head cases.
We must use FA as it is intended; not as a way to save money.
Trades, Draft, FA is how championship teams are made and the boys need to do that.
