Tony Romo gets epidural injection in his back

Sometime after the Cowboys returned to Dallas following their victory at Washington on Sunday, quarterback Tony Romo received an epidural injection to relieve pain and reduce inflammation related to the herniated disk in his lower back, according to sources.

It is typically two or three days before doctors can determine whether the injection has succeeded. This is the normal conservative treatment protocol for such a back injury, and the Cowboys hope that it enables Romo to recover in time to play in Sunday night's winner-take-all matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

But sources close to the quarterback consider that a long shot and remain skeptical he can safely play and function as an NFL quarterback, especially in such a short time.

"I would be very, very surprised if he got back on the field," one source said.

At this time, Romo has been advised that he likely will need surgery eventually, but sources say that no such procedure has been scheduled.

Doctors often treat patients with epidurals to block pain and promote healing. Often, multiple injections are required over time before the patient's symptoms dramatically improve. It is also possible the damage is such that the injections will not provide relief.

So I guess in a day or two we'll find out if the injection has helped? If the injection is a success, what are the chances he plays? I still think he might be able to play with an injection before the game, or he'll at least attempt to.

Time will tell. Even if he does play, how is he going to take a hit?

I've had one of those before. The injection itself can cause pain and swelling that lasts several days. Then again, Tony Romo's pain tolerance is probably higher than mine.

i hope this is in the best long term interest of romo and the cowboys and not just an attempt by jerry to put him on the field to try and get into the playoffs

Then the OL better play the best they ever have, keep extra TE in for pass protection.....j/k....but I agree, how would / could he take a hit.

Or twist and spin away from a sack like he has done so well in the past

He was able to do it on the last drive of the game, which is when he was also dealing with the pain/herniated disk. Granted, he probably had a high amount of adrenaline running through his body, but an injection will pretty much do the same thing. If there's no risk to significantly injure his back further, then my bet is he plays.

If I were Dallas, I would leave it up to Romo if he plays or not though. If he decides to play, then JG shouldn't decide to sit him. I'm sure Romo knows all the risk involved, and it's not like he has many years left in his football career.

The only way he plays is if there is no risk for further damage. Otherwise he won't be cleared to play.

I seriously doubt he plays Sunday. But kudos to Romo for doing everything he can to play.

I agree. If he can't further injure it and it just comes down to pain, there is no doubt he will take a shot before the game and play.

Who knows. But it doesn't look good with all the unnamed sources saying there is no way he will play.

I've had about a dozen epidural injections in my back over the last 3 years or so. The injection site will itch like crazy and his back will feel better, but it's not gonna make a huge difference.

Oh and he's gonna play sunday if he's getting an injection today. No sense getting the injection if a surgery is planned soon anyway.

This. If they really thought he wasn't going to play, he'd likely already be under the knife.

Until its successfully surgically repaired, he risks further injury just bending over. It doesn't look good for Tony.

Don't let him take a hit. Get the ball out of his hands quick and rely on the run.

Right, play all plays out of the shotgun, no drop backs, quick hitters on pass plays, a lot of draw plays to Murray, end around plays, reverses.
Even let Murray have a few pass plays. It's possible.

If they can get the pain under control, help him be able to move better and are convinced no further damage can be sustained, I'd clear him.

If those 3 things can happen then he should play. He has all offseason to get this fixed and he is being compensated well.

Players have played with disc injuries and waited for the season to end to get it taken care of and I'm pretty sure Romo has had this for longer than we all realize. He finished the skins game and played well. I wouldn't be shocked at seeing him give it a go IMO.

I wouldn't be surprised if he tries to give it a go. In fact, I kinda expect that he will. I never question Tonys will.
This whole situation we are faced with in a way reminds me of what Washington had going with the rg knee situation last yr. he got out there and found a way but paid the price career wise. I know knee and back are diff. But still is it worth the risk.... I personally would let the doctors make the call.
