It's also been confirmed that he is not playing.

Show me where Jerry Jones, Jason Garret, or Tony Romo himself has came out and said, "HE WILL NOT PLAY THIS UPCOMING WEEK." You can't, because it hasn't been said, but what has been said is that they're still hoping he can go. I'm assuming they're waiting how his back responds to the treatment/shots, and if it has made any progress.

Tell me if/when Jerry Jones, Jason Garret, or Romo says he's not playing, because that's all I care about, not some "source" from Adam Schefter.

Look man, we all want Romo to play but the fact that he will need surgery, no medical doctor is going to clear that man to play. It's time work with what we have and get behind Orton.

Tony Romo gets epidural injection in his back

Sometime after the Cowboys returned to Dallas following their victory at Washington on Sunday, quarterback Tony Romo received an epidural injection to relieve pain and reduce inflammation related to the herniated disk in his lower back, according to sources.

It is typically two or three days before doctors can determine whether the injection has succeeded. This is the normal conservative treatment protocol for such a back injury, and the Cowboys hope that it enables Romo to recover in time to play in Sunday night's winner-take-all matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

But sources close to the quarterback consider that a long shot and remain skeptical he can safely play and function as an NFL quarterback, especially in such a short time.

"I would be very, very surprised if he got back on the field," one source said.

At this time, Romo has been advised that he likely will need surgery eventually, but sources say that no such procedure has been scheduled.

Doctors often treat patients with epidurals to block pain and promote healing. Often, multiple injections are required over time before the patient's symptoms dramatically improve. It is also possible the damage is such that the injections will not provide relief.

So I guess in a day or two we'll find out if the injection has helped? If the injection is a success, what are the chances he plays? I still think he might be able to play with an injection before the game, or he'll at least attempt to.

Let's cross our fingers, I think it's our only hope to win this game and maybe doing something in the playoffs, plus he deserves the chance to lead this team to the playoffs and along the way quiet some of his critics.
By the way, love your sig, I might steal it.

there is not much more you can herniate the disc, so playing won't further injure his back. The concern is getting hit because he can't move or run to get away, risking injuring himself in another part of the body.

I have a herniated disc in my lower back, and I'm not comparing it to Tony, but I can manage the symptoms. But when it flares up, it is very difficult to make any sudden movements and the whole back side of my right leg becomes numb and walking is difficult.

This is false. The Cowboys have not ruled him out.

They're obviously waiting to see how he responds to the treatment. That's the only thing that's been "officially confirmed" in regards to his status Sunday night.

the iggles will be licking their chops to get at him in any way they can. I can see a late hit and them living with the 15 yard penalties.

You keep believing that.

i hope this is in the best long term interest of romo and the cowboys and not just an attempt by jerry to put him on the field to try and get into the playoffs

This.

I'm hoping the same thing.

I don't want this to be another RGIII controversy..

Murray will get like 30 touches and we will beat PHila w/o Romo, we have zero pressure guys.

I don't know about zero pressure, but there's no doubt in my mind that the Cowboys can win this game. The Eagles are just as erratic as the Cowboys. I would feel better with a healthy Romo, but even if Orton plays, I'm not ruling out a Cowboys victory.

It's probably not that bad. I have a bulging disk in my lower back (and in my neck) arthritis in my lower back, and multilevel disk and joint degeneration. I'm in the army and do everything required of my MOS (and our shop has the most and heaviest equipment so I do a lot of heavy lifting).

A direct hit or pain when scrambling is the least of Romo's worries. The biggest issue is how is the pain (or numbness) going to effect his throwing/mechanics?

People have been saying for a few weeks now that Romo has been "off" and that his passes don't have much zip on them. Now we know why.

Correct on all counts. I have a partially torn / herniated and degenerative disk between L4/L5 and have gone the EI route with luckily some amazing results. Thought that is what he would do if he were going to try to get on the field. I would also add that with all of the unknowns, the wrong bend, twist, step, or fall could trigger unmanageable spasms, or not. Just depends on a bit of luck. Also thought the same thing earlier today that the "off" we have all seen from Tony this year is probably attributable to this, or some connected spinal condition that's been kept under wraps.

Seeing how Romo played Sunday, especially that last drive, I find it hard to believe that the injury is THAT serious. Either he has been getting treatment for it while "hiding" it OR the injury isn't as bad as they are leading on. I have had back surgery for the same issue being described and currently get an epidural every 4 months. Romo is in great shape so I believe that IF the epidural relieves the pain there is a good chance he can play! There is little risk of any further damage unless like I said they have been hiding something. Personally as much as I have ragged on Romo for the last 7 years....right NOW he IS our best chance.
