INDIANAPOLIS -- Cowboys QB Tony Romo said via text message he most likely will have a protective plate surgically implanted to help strengthen his left collarbone after undergoing a CT scan next week.

Romo's collarbone was broken twice in 2015 (three times since 2010).

The surgery is expected to take place within the next two weeks and Romo will be able to participate in the organized team activities in May and June. There had been talk Romo would undergo a Mumford procedure, in which the distal part of the clavicle would have been shaved down to alleviate potential pressure from the shoulder.

Romo will have the CT scan once the team's medical staff returns from the scouting combine in Indianapolis. A CT scan earlier in the offseason showed the bone was healing properly after he suffered a hairline fracture on Thanksgiving against the Carolina Panthers. The initial break came Sept. 20 against the Philadelphia Eagles and forced Romo to miss seven games.

Speaking earlier in the week at the combine, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said either option would be "a preventative type surgery, and I think he's wanting to make sure if he does do it, it's the right way to do it."

The Cowboys went 3-1 in Romo's four starts in 2015. He completed 83 of 121 passes for 884 yards with five touchdown passes and seven interceptions. Romo's replacements, Brandon Weeden, Matt Cassel and Kellen Moore, combined for a 1-11 record.

Wasn't there a breaking news story a weel or two ago that he was more likely to choose the Mumford procedure rather than a plate?

Oh wait! My definition for breaking news is outdated. In today's world, "breaking" means "not verified, but will get clicks."

(No disrespect to the OP, my comment is relates to the state of journalism in general, not the act of posting the story here.) :)

I don't know about Goff, he has small hands. I mean how many baby hands do we want on this team?

But back to Romo, I hope he does get this surgery. My nephew got it. He broke his collarbone playing football his freshman year ( 2 years ago). He went up to defend a pass and landed on his side awkwardly and it snapped. The next day they put the plate in and he's had no problems with it ever since. And he's played on the varsity team as a sophomore and he's a smaller guy and he never reinjured his shoulder mixing it up with the big boys. He also said post surgery it didn't really hurt. As quickly as 3 hours after the surgery he was playing clash of clans like a boss.

Championship guys, it's coming.

I'll admit there is a big school bias in me choosing Goff over Wentz. I just don't think a QB from No, Dakota will have been tested the same way Goff has. If we pickup McCoy as a backup QB in FA, Wentz would be fine with me too. One of the top three need to be targeted and even traded up for if needed. Whose to say someone doesn't leapfrog CLE/SD (who both need QBs) with a trade up to TEN to leave us short @ 4? All of the the top 3 QBs are gone by pick 4 = Bosa who plays the same position as Lawrence @ SDLE. A MLB while retaining Ro? A CB/S will not help this team over the next decade.Who are we are missing out on? There are no guarantees with any draft pick but you have to be aggressive when you want your franchise QB.

I find it laughable that people want to waste our highest draft pick in two decades on a project QB. If there was a "Andrew Luck" type QB, I'd be all on board.. but none of these QBs are even close to being starting material from day 1. This is the worst group of QBs in a single class year that I can remember. There are question marks for every QB in this draft, yet folks still want to draft one in the first round. If you want to draft a backup.. go ahead! They'll be plenty of them after the first round that are not much worse than Goff or Wentz (nobody even knew who this guy was before the senior bowl).. C'mon people, our defense has way to many holes to be worried about a bench warmer..smh. Yet I know, they'll be plenty who will sarcastically disagree... of course they'll be the same people that will be "blaming Jerry" a year from now. smh. Funny, how quickly people forget that we had a decent backup in Orton, but that jerk quit on us. Go get a decent back up via free agency, then use this DL deep draft to help rebuild our defense.

for the record:

1- Jalen Ramsey (play making CB/S) [day 1 starter]
2- Vernon Butler DL [day 1 starter]
3- Alex Collins RB (played similar zone blocking scheme at AK) [would immediately contribute-year 2 starter]
4- Xavien Howard CB (could go DL again) [Dime package starter]
4- Dak Prescott (will only get better sitting behind Romo) [better than any back-up last year]
5- Glenn Gronkowski FB (if he's anything like he's brother...) (trade 6th) [day 1 starter]
6- Joe Schobert LB (tackling machine)
6- added another DL

I find it laughable that people think that Andrew Luck type of QB come out every couple of years.. The college game is not pumping out guys like this right out of school. Spread offense is killing QB development. We don't know how good these 3 guys are going to be. The guys that are paid to evaluate talent get hired or fired because of these decisions. Let them make it.

I find it laughable that ppl think Andrew Luck is that good. He's probably the most overrated player in the NFL

seriously, people dont watch college football and assume there are guys like him in the pipeline.the chances of another Andrew luck coming out from college and us having a top pick at the same time is ZERO.

We are just getting out from under our worst draft pick/trade in decades-Claiborne and our worst FA signing ever-Carr and you want to jump right back into the CB pool. No thanks.

You just don't get chances to draft QBs that often in DAL and we need to hit on this one.
Romo is not playing for 4-5 more years. One or two if we are lucky.
Worst case we have talented back-ups that can be traded to re-coup the pick. QBs are gold.
DEN is looking to give Osweiler and WAS is looking to give Cousins 20m

Andrew Luck in 3 1/2 years is 35-20, has 15,000 yards, 101 TDs - 55 INTs, broke Payton Manning's single season yards record for the Colts, went 11-5 his first 3 years making the playoffs and plays behind a crap Oline with no running game. Dude just sucks

A 2-1 INT to TD ratio isn't that great. I don't think he sucks but he's overrated

Jerry says things all the time. So does his son Stephen and their scouts that also have say in the draft. Romo getting a plate in his collar isn't exactly good news for Jerry's 4-5 year plan.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Cowboys QB Tony Romo said via text message he most likely will have a protective plate surgically implanted to help strengthen his left collarbone after undergoing a CT scan next week.

I would not be in favor of an attempt to strengthen via internal fixation. A plate requires screws, and they may actually weaken the bone at those sites. ORIF (open reduction and internal fixation) is used to stabilize fractures so that proper alignment can be achieved during healing. Once healed solid, the internal device becomes superfluous. An exception to that is an intramedulary nail or pin, which maintains alignment without screws; even those are sometimes removed after complete union.

Tony is too far along the healing process to introduce further complexity to the fracture site.
The Mumford procedure is a distal clavicular shortening - it does not affect the fracture site or have the potential for weakening the bone.

Therefore, if prudent orthopedists think ORiF is necessary, there must be a protracted non-union, due to unknown factors.
