You're right. The running game was a lot less important back then, unlike today where you can't win without a superstar running back.

NFLNW talked a little while tonight on this.
They admits it was a final and fun throwaway line at the end of very strong speech at the event he was being honored at.
They laughed,come on Tony, you have to know those final 3 seconds is all anyone will hear. All three on the set liked it though. Loved his confidence even if it was semi in jest.
And unlike ESPN highlights, they showed about 10 spectacular plays and no bad ones for once. They also had some good graphics ...I wonder if most people realize his playoff TD:int rate is 8:2.

I will just quote the only part of your post that made any rational sense and respond to it. I have no issue with Romo's proclamation, in fact I'm glad he said it.
I just don't believe we are going to win a super bowl unless we drastically improve the RB position. If Gurley or Gordon are gone and we think we are going to wing it with a RB like Yeldon and DMF after our identity was our running game last year... which opened up the passing game as well, then we are mistaken. I don't even think we can win a super bowl with Gurley or Gordon as our starting RB this year either. I really do feel we need an accomplished back to help get us to the super bowl. A RB like Peterson can drastically help cover up a suspect defense.
You have a different opinion? That is cool... I'm glad you actually typed something out this time instead of positing a cartoon character.
