Great read on the play of the game.

Tony Romo's magic trick revealed
By Danny Kelly@FieldGulls on Oct 15 2014, 11:41a 10

Against all odds, Tony Romo kept the Cowboys alive with a 23-yard pass to Terrance Williams on third-and-20. Danny Kelly takes a closer look at how he did it.

Getting to 5-1 hasn't always been easy for the Dallas Cowboys. After stumbling out of the gate against the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas needed a huge comeback against the St. Louis Rams in Week 3. The Cowboys mounted another this past week in Seattle to knock off the defending champs.

Their shocking defeat of a Seahawks team that had lost one of its previous 19 games at home almost didn't happen, though, and it took a brilliant, absurdly low-probability, gutsy play by Tony Romo on a third-and-20 late in the game to put the Cowboys alone in the NFL spotlight after six weeks.

Here's what the official boxscore says:

3-20-DAL 31 (4:55 4th Quarter) (Shotgun) T.Romo pass deep right to T.Williams ran ob at SEA 46 for 23 yards.

I feel like they should add an exclamation mark to plays like this, because that vapid, emotionless fragment does nothing to capture what might be the play of the year thus far in the NFL.

With 4:55 remaining in the game, the Seahawks led 23-20 despite Dallas' huge advantage in yards, first downs and time of possession. Seattle had Dallas on the ropes, though, and after Romo missed Dez Bryant to the short left, the Cowboys faced a third-and-20 and the prospect of giving the ball back to the Seahawks so they could run the clock out.

At this moment, according to Advanced NFL Analysis Win Probability Chart, which is based on extensive modeling of previous game situations of this down/distance/time, the Cowboys had an 18 percent chance of winning the game..

That play has been running through my mind all week. I just couldn't believe it.

The fact that it had a mere 18% chance isn't the half of it. Romo resting in the pocket and throwing down the middle of the field to move the chains, wouldn't have been nearly as spectacular. It was the Hudini act that Romo is so well known for, and the amazing two feet drag on the sideline by T. Williams, along with the instant replay that made it a highlight for the history books.

My heart nearly stopped.

That's the difference between you and me. I believe in this team. I thought we had a chance going into Seattle. My only concern was the atmosphere and getting behind early. Even when we got down early I was disappointed but didn't think we were done. My thought was "OK, somebody make a play." No one specifically made a play (i.e., forced a fumble or an INT). What happened was what Nelli & Jason has created and developed in the team this year .... All 22 kept grinding away. That's a recipe for victory.

I agree. What amazes me is how Tony is able to not only escape but regain composure and focus down field to be able to find his targets then throw a strike.

Amazing, riduculously awesome play, and we don't win the game without it.

The lack of credit Romo's gotten for our 5-game win streak is pretty funny. Seems like all the national praise has been reserved for Murray and the OL, as if we haven't needed (and gotten) tremendous QB play on top of a great run game and Romo's only job has been to "not screw it up."

Evidently, a 10-2 TD/INT ratio, the best 3rd down rate (usually a passing down) in the NFL, and 2 of the biggest plays of the season... to help us beat 2 of the best defenses in the league... don't count for much when the QB is Tony Romo.

I agree I don't any Bus drivers making some of the plays Romo has. I do like the fact that Romo no longer feels he has to do it all for the team to win.

Idk man, Chris Berman of all people was giving him some serious love Monday night at halftime. But I agree with that sentiment 99% of the time. I'd love to know what his passer rating is after the first half of the SF game...a game that wasnt that bad, but a lot of people wrote him off afterward.

I saw one write up from the USA Today (I think) refer to Romo as "still lethal when he needs to be."

I thought that was pretty accurate.

Agreed, so many things had to go right in order for that play to be made...1) Romo had to avoid the sack, 2) he had to regain composure and direct TWill to the spot he needed him, 3) Romo needed to throw a perfect strike that only TWill could catch, 4) he needed Witten to not intefere with pass that he could have easily thought was intended for him. 5) Twill needed to catch the ball that he had to fully extend to catch, 6) Twill needed to drag his feet inbounds. So many things could have gone wrong and had just one thing happened differently in that play, we wuld have been punting or it would have been a TO and we could be easily having a different discussion on the state of the Cowboys today. It really could be the play of the season.

Prior to that conversion 55 times teams had faced 3rd and 20 situations before that plays exactly 1 had been converted into a first down. Now make it 2 of 56. :)

and I commend u and the rest on your faith. I'm just so used to our boys loosing in these moments that its taken a monumental game like this to change that. before the game I was like "I hope we can at least compete and not get bulldozed" because lets face it not many teams can beat the defending champs at the clink. now after this game I'm like "oh so its going to be like this huh Cowboys?" my expectations have changed now. 17yrs of mediocrity is a tough cloud to diminish. and a game like the Seattle game and a 5 game win streak is starting to clear the skies.

I was getting a little anxious at that point but, unlike years past, this team is making plays when it counts. I hope they can keep it up.

true that. I've been on the cautious optimism program since saints game. I felt or had a sneaky suspicion that this team was different because of the dedication to a run game and that impressive oline. Seattle's game confirmed it. I didn't know the confirmation would come so soon. that 3n20 play as the article mentions was a scenario in which has a high propability for failure. considering that our boys have a history of not having success in these critical moments my feelings were based on history and logic and realism. now after this game its surreal. "its going to be like that huh Cowboys" ok game on. this may just be a miracle year when things FINALLY go our way when its been so long around here where things never go our way in these critical moments. still more games left to play and cowboys need to get over the december slump pattern. but now we have hope.

My favorite part of that play is when Tony knows the guy is coming from his blindside and sets up the spin move perfectly by doing a quick stutter step forward to force the guy to come back inside and then hit him with the spin. He doesn't even check to see that it works, it was almost like he knew the guy might be ready for the spin move so he makes the defender think he's going to step into the pocket before he pulls the okie doke. Awesome play.

Kind of a pure basketball move there by Mr Romo. A little more and Witt would have been right there interfering with the catch. So much had to go right on that baby.

Oh yes Cowboys fans ... It's like that. Now don't go back to that past-17-years mentality if we lose one.
Stay strong. We've got a long way to go.:flagwave:
