As I was driving home yesterday listening to Galloway and Company, they had Babe Laufenberg (who has always been a Romo Supporter) and he had some very interesting questions regarding Romo's value.

First question was, Jeff Fisher is on the phone and wants to do a straight up trade Tony Romo for Vince Young, do you do it?

Second question, Denny Green is on the phone and wants to do a straight up trade Tony Romo for Matt Leinhart, do you do it?

Jay Cutler for Tony Romo?

What say you?

Personally, the only one I give any thought too is Cutler.

If we're trading QB's we're trading contracts too.

Romo has shown more than any of those 3 on this level.

We trade him and miss on the new QB we're screwed.

Pass.

After 3 years of grooming and now seeing it in reg season I'd stick with Romo. This is a tough question but right now I think we are starting to see the makings of a talented QB

  1. Romo is much further ahead of those QB's
  2. Romo is showing that he has what it take to be a good QB
  3. Romo has moxie
  4. Those 1st round QB's could all go bust
  5. Romo is an undrafted that is putting up numbers like a Vet
So my answer is NO

What did the experts say?

I would NOT do it.........

Babe Laufenberg, Bill Stenoford and Randy Galloway all said they would pass.

Galloway is a huge Vincent Young fan and even said he would pass on him.

I just thought this conversation was interesting because what Babe said, it is amazing how far Romo has come and how he is viewed.

They also discussed how expensive it may be to re-sign him.

I dont know what the FA Market is like in 2 years, but I could easily see Romo among the most sought after players if indeed he walks.

Ya, that was a very interesting convo and to hear GaC daddy say he'd stick with Romo was even more interesting. It really does show how Tony is being viewed in the Metroplex. People realize he's been around for 3.5 years, was groomed by Bill and now looks for all the world like he's ready. We are gonna go into AZ and beat them and make Leinart look bad;), then Tony has a duel with the "great" Payton, and the nation will get a look at him head to head with a HOF QB. Should be interesting!

Cowboys, Mexican, Grandparents and ton of family in Texas, we've been looking for a young QB forever.......

Jerry won't let him walk.

It's not even so much that one has to think Romo's upside is higher than those first-round quarterbacks. It's a matter, in my mind, that you don't develop for four years what appears to be a high-quality player only to let him walk/trade him the second he starts showing something.

Just the fact that the franchise steps back a few years by doing that would make it not worth it, considering the standing of the current team. Do any of those players have a much higher ceiling than Romo? I could maybe see Cutler, but IMO Young is almost a sure miss, and I don't think Leinart has any more physical talent than Romo.

There is no NFL "book" on any of those guys yet. Give DC's a chance to see all of them, disect their weaknesses, then see who can adjust and still do well next year.

Until then, I'd stick with Romo. That said, Romo would have to look real good at years end to keep me from grabbing a blue chipper if the oppertunity arises. You can always develop a youngster, and if Romo works out for a year or two, trade the kid later, after you showcase him a bit:).

Said like a true Cowboy fan.

But I think the rest of the NFL would disagree.

Because I dont think Radio is going to have a career and I don't think leinart's physical attributes are a significant upgrade from Romo, who has the additional benefit of having been in the system for four years? If you say so, sunshine.

I think most NFL fans would also take Cutler/Leinart/Young over, say, Delhomme -- based on potential alone -- if they were asked who they'd rather have.

I don't know if it's a move the Panthers should make, though, if offered.

I think when you invest the time to develop a quarterback, and then he actually appears to make it worthwhile, you don't then turn your back and let him walk the first time a sexier name/talent walks by.

*Granted, Delhomme wasn't entirely "developed" by Carolina since he was a free-agent acquisition. Hopefully, that doesn't entirely tarnish the point I'm trying to make.

I'm happy with Romo's play. That doesn't mean I wouldn't try to upgrade the QB position.

And you're convinced that those players are an upgrade?

Of course you are. Even though there is no rational reason for thinking so. There's plenty of doubt about Vince Young. His speed is only so-so at the NFL level, and his ability to read the defense and make quick decisions is suspect at best thus far. Leinart has looked good in spots, and bad in others, and is making standard rookie mistakes. Since the Giants game, Romo has been very judicious with the ball.

Of those three, there is no clear upgrade over Romo. You can say what you want about potential, but it's far from a sure thing. Romo is outperforming all of them in his first action in the NFL. You can't take that step back.

We won't let Romo's contract get to that point. He'll get a sweet deal and I wouldn't doubt that it's the 1st thing we start figuring on after the season's over. Noway JJ lets Romo get away.
