Too many soft players

Too bad Romo doesn't have his interceptions dropped. Why, he'd be just like Eli if he did. :laugh2:

Yeah, right.

I already put this guy on Ignore. Too many posts like this above. He has some kind of weird obsession with Romo.

He's basically saying that Romo is average. If Romo can't win unless everything around him is perfect, that means he's average.

Bingo!

we beat the 49ers and were a a play or two away from winning the NFC east and you guys act like our team is an embarrassment--and don't give me any of that "win the SB or you are a loser" crap. We were an 8-8 team from start to finish, about where we should be, in the process of making big changes (OL revamping)which hopefully will continue next year on defense.

If management goes into the offseason with that mentality then we're going to be in trouble. We were also a play away from losing to wash and Miami.

True. I think the Cowboys have to look at the good and bad of this season try to build off the good things they did and try to fix the bad.

As has been said by many of coaches over the years the margin between winning and losing is slim. Most games will come down to a small handful of plays and the teams who step up make make those plays be it on offense, defense or special teams will likely win.

In my view I don't think the Cowboys are way off but we clearly have areas that need to be address to put ourselfs in a better position to win those handful of plays that then will swing a game

This same mentality has been pervasive for years amongst fans (especially here at CZ) and the FO for over a decade:

  • We're ONE player away, so lets trade the farm for Joey Galloway!
  • We're ONE player away, so lets trade the farm for Roy Williams! (love the way we learn from our mistakes)
  • We're ONE bobbled hold from the SuperBowl! (Nevermind that our defense actually had a chance to get us the ball back, but failed when it mattered most [again]. Nevermind that we had more games to play afterwards, but many delusional fans already had us in the Superbowl).
  • We had the best record in the league, so we have to be good! (Nevermind that we were the first #1 seed to lose in the first round of the playoffs).
  • We're such a good team that we can afford to draft special teamers! (Nevemind that Jerry made the same mistake in '95)
  • We beat the Colts who went on win the SuperBowl, so we're this close...
  • We beat the Saints who went on win the SuperBowl, so we're this close...
  • We swept the Giants who went on win the SuperBowl, so we're this close...
  • Two years ago, our defense was number one, and yeah, they stunk last year, but let's bring 'em all back again and we'll be great!
  • We've made it to the second round of the playoffs! (Wade's wonderful comment about us having the bye in the playoffs)

Some people, it appears, will never, ever learn, and what's most frustrating about it all is the most delusional of them all is in charge.

It's beyond maddening.

I think what happens is when we draft new players they get mingled in with the rest of our weak minded quiet team and they emulate them to an extent. So in other words, the weak minded behavior is contagious.
i really believe this is an issue.

when you draft players or bring in free agents, 9 times out of 10, they will look to assimilate into the established culture in order to not step on anybody's toes.

well they are coming into a locker room with no vocal leaders, a locker room full of quitters from 2010, a locker room full of guys who like to help the opponent off the turf and give them love taps every 5 seconds, a locker room with very little accountability to each other, a locker room with players that blatantly avoid contact in games, a locker room where high priced vets are given playing time regardless of the quality of their play, a locker room where nobody ever tries to stir the pot when things are going bad, a locker room full of december chokers, a locker room full of faux leaders, a locker room full of one year wonders with multi year contracts, etc...

this is the culture new players are being infected by and therefore becoming part of the problem as well.

we have to cut it off at its head. destroy the core of this team, it's not working.

You and I will just have to agree to disagree on the defense. We had terrible players trying their best to stay in games and keep up but just couldn't. Our defense is and was twice as bad as our offensive line. Romo put up some great stats this year and no he did not do it all on his own. The offensive line did play a role in him having his best year ever. Again, it needs to improve but is nowhere close to as bad as the defense IMO.

So you claim our O line played well?

What planet are you from?

Terrific post and spot on man. I couldn't agree more. This team needs a radical change/ makeover.

that pick was one that samuels comes up with 9 out of 10 times; he did not have to leap all that much.

Great.. now we just need more fans to see the light.

Generally speaking when people start going towards qualitative generalizations such as 'soft' as an explanation it is a clear sign that they have no clue what they are talking about.

There were plenty of games where the team exhibited mental toughness over and over again.

Newman could not run as fast as he once could. You saw that watching him play Cruz and Jackson. Thats why he played off. Its pretty obvious. When you say that he is 'soft,' I say you are clueless.

Bradie James and Keith Brooking cannot run. You should have been able to see that as teams would run slot receivers, backs and TE across their zones and they could not keep up. Carter was not used to playing run defense in a 3-4 alignment. He chose wrong gaps or would hesitate. Thats not soft. Soft is just a simplification for those that cannot or will not look deeper.

Our center has (hopefully had)short arms. He would lunge to try and make contact and DT would club him to the ground. We saw that over and over again. Before the season ever began we were going with low round draft picks and UDFA. Thats not soft. If anything its rebuilding an oline and overaggression.

A 'killer instinct' is not going to give those guys speed. We need to bring in better talent that can execute the proper techniques at the relative positions.

How's this for a bit of dboy back-at-cha. I was saying this back in 2010!!!111.

Sure, if every single player on the team is a veteran and has danced that dance before. The real bottom line is, teams are constantly picking up fresh rookies who are barely at legal drinking age and are still highly impressionable individuals and your star and franchise QB is spouting about how we'll see you in the Superbowl. You don't think that runs the risk of making a mark on rookies? Oh I don't have to put in as much effort because we're a Superbowl bound team.

This team JUST lost its coach who had issues having his guys play 100%.

Soft, weak minded, over the hill, coaches learning on the job, etc. We had all of that on our team in 2011. We need to move past it.

It has been an issue for several years. Glad you were talking about it in 2010 though. It's nice to see a poster who gets it.

Exactly which impressionable young guys are buying into this soft culture? Was it Smith, Lee, Lissemore or Dez? Costa is known for being physically limited but relentless. You guys just make stuff up as you go along it seems.

You take to being programmed for simple spin phrases very well.

Gotta read Fuzzbucket, gotta read.

I never said it did make an impression, but it does run the risk of it. In an ideal world I guess I'd rather my players and specifically my QB not go out there and predict Superbowls before the season started. I know he's playing to the crowd a bit but I don't like it. Let's leave the Superbowl predictions and ticket purchases to our owner.

Jerry and his personel has proven their worth over the last two decades, the damage is done.... drowned in the same Super Bowl as the Browns.
