Calmed down, took a shower, poured a glass of scotch, and am ready to reflect on the game.
First, the better team won today. I don't think they're too much better, regardless of the final score. The game would likely have had a different outcome had the game been played in Dallas, but that's what an extra win in the regular season gets you. A few key plays could have changed the game, but it didn't happen.
In the coming days we're going to hear people whine and complain about the Vikings running up the score. I really don't have a problem with it. You play the game for 60 minutes, and we were still calling time outs and going for it on 4th down late in the game (as we should have). If we're going to go out fighting, they have every right to play out the string as well.
In all, it was a good season. I am not satisfied, one playoff win doesn't cut it for this franchise and the fans deserve better. But this team has come a long way, has a strong nucleus, and we can all see that they're only going to get better.
This game exposed some serious problems that need to be corrected in the off-season. In no particular order:
1. To me, it's clear that while Barber is a good running back, Felix is a great one. He's an injury risk, but he really needs to be the primary back on the football field. That audible to a toss to Barber in the third quarter was a momentum killer.
2. The Cowboys must fix the kicking situation. It's not what beat us today, but it's a serious liability. There is no way that Suisham can come back. I'd much prefer that Beuhler gets a real shot at it in the off season.
3. This might be stating the obvious, but the best and easiest path to the Superbowl is through home field. Next year this team must secure one of those first round byes and get home field advantage.
And finally, to bring it back to today's game, I can already see all the hating on Favre. As much as I am sick to my stomach that our team lost, the grizzled old vet played one hell of a game and I'll be pulling for the Vikes to beat the Saints and represent the conference in the Superbowl.
Regardless, it'll be a long off-season and we'll be debating it all here for months. But I'm proud to be a Cowboys fan, and proud of our team. They fought hard and gave us their all this season.
