I noticed during the game that on one play the announcer bragged on Heath having great coverage. I thought, man that's something I don't think anyone has ever said before. I'm glad that Heath is stepping up and playing better. Maybe the light is starting to come on for the guy.

Lol...Didn't The Big Tuna have a policy of no coaches talking to the media at all. Sounds like your saying it's not the same for JG?

Very few if any HCs other than Parcells completely forbid the assistants from talking to the media. Broaddus does work in the same office and is employed by the same team as the coaches so he's really only pseudo media.

It is not clear if Broaddus got confirmation from anyone else other than himself watching the tape.

http://www.dallascowboys.com/news/2...offenses-missed-opportunities-against-seattle

From the article:

After the game, I had a question about whether Barry Church should have carried tight end Luke Wilson up the seam on the play that resulted in a Seahawks touchdown. The film showed that was exactly the case and it was a mistake on his part. Just by the positioning of Jeff Heath, I knew there was a mistake. Heath was on the other side of the field. There was no way that he could have been in coverage from where he was. It was Church’s job in that particular coverage to carry Wilson.

To be honest, looking at the clips the OP posted, it looks more likely to me that it was Lee's mistake.

They all hate him because he was a starter as a rookie back in 2013 when Kiffin was the DC and the defense sucked.

Nobody really knows much about him since that time.

Wait. Didn't you hate him too while back? I'm pretty sure you and I went back and forth on Heath vs Wilcox few years back.

you can vote for heath as safety in the espn pro bowl ballot !
I did just because people here and on DC.com have ragged on him so much.
Also he is better than some think.

No, it was not me. I've always thought both Heath and Wilcox had potential. I even remember posting about how Heath on 2 different occasions out ran Scandrick while chasing a runner down the field. I'm still shocked that happened.

Heath has done well this year at safety.

Glad to see him improve, and the coaches giving him more playing time while guys like Church aren't playing at their old 100% level.

Yeah, I see a lot of posters on here knocking Heath but from what I've seen, he seems like a pretty solid and smart player. I'll be the first to admit that I haven't focused on his play but I like the guy.

My impression of Heath is that he's like Bill Walsh said about Steve DeBerg 'he's good enough to get you beat.'

He runs really well and he's pretty aggressive in there. But, I don't think he has the overall physical talent to be a good safety.

My guess in all of this is that Heath has simply been practicing well for a while and the coaching staff decided to give him more playing time because they felt he earned it. And I think he played well against the Seahawks. But, my optimism is tempered based on past performance.

As far as Church goes, I think it's presumptive to blame Lee on that play although I would think that there would be some inside help. Church played the play horrendously though. He was juked out of his shoes. Even if Lee went the wrong way, it still doesn't excuse Church from playing the play so poorly.

The coaches seem to have zero confidence in Wilcox in coverage. And Church and Wilcox are basically the same player, so they are more comfortable with Jones and Heath as deep safeties, with Jones stepping forward against 3-4 receiver sets.

The guy who is really in the dog house is Tyler Patmon.

As I asked another poster, what is that based on? His rookie season when he started several games and the entire defense with Kiffin as DC was a mess? It was either that or preseason games because he has not played enough in regular season games before the past 2 weeks to really have any evidence of his abilities or lack of abilities.

He might indeed be as limited as people believe but we just don't have any evidence one way or the other. He has looked as good as Church or Wilcox these past 2 weeks, maybe better.

The guy I'm wondering about it White. I thought he was doing a good job as the slot CB (although I have not studied him in detail) but he was replaced by Jones as the slot CB last week. I thought maybe he was injured, but he was credited with 9 snaps on ST.

Jones is just playing so well. He actually controlled Gronkowski, and he did a good job against Graham.

We really have something in that guy.

No doubt. He has basically played 4 different positions as a rookie.
TE coverage specialist in the Dime.
SS
FS
Slot CB

The only reason I'm concern about him playing slot CB is because it takes him away from those other roles when he is in the slot CB position.

Jones is just outplaying everybody.

I wasn't giving it my full attention, but did Broaddus suggest today that a coach indicated White might be earning snaps at FS with Jones in the near future? I thought that's what he said, but didn't care enough to backup the stream and listen to the bloviating that led up to it again.

I don't listen to those dc.com clown shows. I had expected White to possibly play some Safety when the acquired him.

I had hoped to see one of both of them playing more CB because they both seem better than Carr and smarter than Claiborne; however, after seeing Jones moving all over the secondary that seems to be a good fit for him as multiple position player.

He started to play last year towards the end of the season and I didn't think he looked good. Missed assignments and didn't have the physicality to really play the position. In fact, it was one of the reasons why I correctly predicted that the Cowboys would draft Byron Jones because he did play FS and more teams were going to 3-safety defenses and Heath showed nothing in 2014 to prove to me he wasn't a liability and I thought they would draft Jones for those reasons.

At this point he hasn't shown me that he can be a good starting safety, so I wouldn't count on him progressing into one. But, my mind could change by the end of the season.

He doesn't really have to be good at this point. He just needs to be better than Wilcox. He is clearly their choice to play single high when they use Jones in the slot or hybrid S/LB role. He may not have the best instincts, but he is one of the rangiest defensive backs we have.
