Yeah, we definitely could!

Or.. or we couldn't, and never speak of the idea again.

...

Yeah, let's go with that one.

Yesterday's game brought in a fresh perspective on Dallas's run D. They got away with not have a true NT last year because Ratliff is so hard to block he often forces the double team. However, it looks like Dallas needs a big body to clog those running lanes. Is there anyone out there worth trading for? Barber is a good running back, but I feel that Choice is a much better all around back. With Choice and Jones carrying the load, the running game won't suffer too much. However, if teams continue to run up the gut on Dallas, Ratliff could be in for a long season. Is there anyone out there worth bringing in??

There's a little thing called the salary cap and the hit you'd take trading a guy you just signed to a long term deal a year ago and what Nose Tackle is out there on a team that's worth trade for, and that team would want a highly paid running back, because they have a problem at running back....

Someone is playing too much fantasy football..

Getting rid of a barber for a NT will create another problem besides there isn't a NT in the league I would trade barber for. At one point or another we're going ot have to actually draft players to play in the scheme and not just ST players.

Wade is saying in his pc today that they did well against the run when they were in their base defense, but when they tried to blitz they had problems even when it was a run blitz.

I saw at least one big run that was clearly a run blitz. It looked to me like we just blitzed the wrong gap, but it certainly could have been a blown assignment.

Well, I wouldn't trade Barber at this point either. But I certainly agree with you about the NT position. One of my biggest needs during this offseason was a real run stopping NT and to move Rafliff outside. The Cowboys did not address it, and it is showing already. Say what you want about the ILB's not doing their share, but it was obvious on several runs that Ratliff and Savii were being pushed sideways, completely out of the play, leaving huge holes for the TB running backs to hit. The NT's job is to hold his ground and take up a couple of lineman so that the LB's can fill the hole, making the hole either non-existent or as small as possible not allowing the RB the ability to cut. Problem is, Ratliff and Savii were being moved completely out of the hole which allowed TB's RBs too much room to run and then cut on the ILB.

Don't think for a second that every team we play this year will not use this game as a blueprint.
That's funny, I could've sworn that we've played the Giants in the two full years since Jay became a starter.

Before this becomes a runaway train with the "stupid post" logo, in defense of the poster, consider two things.

1. We have a wealth of talent among RBs. That is not to say we should trade Barber, but where else would one find true depth on this team? (And, no, we need Barber)

2. Yesterday showed that the middle and pass rush were anemic if there at all.
However, it is too early in the season to be an alarmist about NT. That was not the only position that was weak yesterday. We are talking about a collective defense that gave up what was it, 130 yards rushing, and hundreds of yards through the air.

However, give it time, Neo.
Chances are that NT will get better, the pass rush will get better and our secondary will continue to jell. And then we'll be better at defending. And, best of all, we can keep Barber.

One other thing, if one reads this entire tread, you'd get the impression that ideas are bad. And the book-burning begins at dusk.

Ideas, good and bad, belong in the Zone to be discussed. And not tossed into the yahoo bonfire at dusk.

Let us not forget that last season this O-line for the Bucs was being touted as one of the best up and coming lines in the NFL... I think they proved that again yesterday... just because the skill position players and the defense aren't that great, doesn't mean that they couldn't have a nasty O-line. So we lost the battle of O-line vs. D-Line? We won the war.... move on!

We are just going to deal with it this year. All the legit 3-4 defenses have big NT cloggers in the middle but everyone here says "why move Ratliff, he's a probowler there" wahwah..well teams are runnin all over us!! Ratliff needs to be moved to DE next year. Don't resign Spears and give me Vince Wilfork please. Problem solved.

You know what you are exactly right! I mean we only had a better run defense than 2/3 of the league last year... But after ONE game, team(S) are running all over us! Makes sense...

We'll never be an elite defense until we get a true 330 pound beast controlling the middle. Sorry.

Are you basing this off of one game? We were 13th in the league with rushing yards allowed and tied for 5th in rushing td allowed last year. Not great but far from your "teams running all over us" end of the world scenario.

What your point? We played the Giants years after Roy Williams became the starting SS, and they still picked that scab to death.

If you were the Giants Offensive Coordinator, and you saw the Bucs run right over Ratiliff time and time again, either leaving him on the ground or halfway to the sidelines, wouldn't you exploit the same weakness? Either you can't see it or you don't want to see it.

For whatever reason, Ratliff needs to give Romo some of whatever he has, because it seems like he can do no wrong in the eyes of many Cowboys fans, even when the evidence is right there on the screen in front of them. I like Ratliff as much as the next guy, but this should have been addressed and in the very least, Ratliff should be our starting RDE right now.

No, he's basing it on the fact that other teams are going to do exactly what they saw done yesterday, the same way they did when they figured out how to exploit Roy Williams lack of speed at the Safety position. It's called a copy cat league.

My point is, why would this game be a "blueprint" for the Giants when they've played several games against him themselves for literally years now?

Do you think it never occurred to them to try to overpower Jay until they saw this Tampa game on Sportscenter?

When will you and everyone else that is determined that Ratliff needs to be moved to DE listen.

#1.) It will NOT happen. Ratliff is a Pro Bowl NT, he didn't get voted to the Pro Bowl by not being a dominate NT.

#2.) There is a REASON that Ratliff has been put as a NT, not a DE to begin with, while his quickness for a NT is exceptional and it allows him to create tons of pressure up the middle, his quickness as a DE would be average at best. He would go from being a Pro Bowl NT, to a run of the mill DE most likely.

#3.) Jay Ratliff does NOT want to play DE, he WANTS to play NT.

It amazes me how many people are still not happy despite the fact that we have a Pro Bowl NT, and arguably the best NT in football.

Only Tampa's OC, who didn't get the job until a week ago, ever thought it would be a good idea to run at Ratliff. "Let's see...do they have any smaller guys on the line? Let's run there." Kind of an idiot savant.

I can't tell you that. I can just say that it would be stupid for them not to follow suit. We have to be ready for that.
