Trade Orton to the Bills for line help; Keep Tanney

in a number of posts around here, I've expressed a negative opinion on the value of a quality backup quarterback. Unless you are a clear Super Bowl contender, I just think that's money that can spent better elsewhere. IF your starter misses 3 games, you hand the ball off 40+ times and go 1-2 or 2-1, depending on opponent quality. If he's out more than that, you're probably doomed anyway, so you'd rather go full Curtis Painter and Suck for Luck (tank the season for a high draft pick).

I definitely think that is the situation with the Cowboys now. If Romo goes down for more than 3 games, I'd rather have a top 10 pick and move up for a qb or other potential star.

Right now the Bills are having massive quarterback injury issues and are slated to have UDFA rookie Jeff Tuel start their first home game, with EJ Manuel maybe still out. I wonder if we could take advantage of the situation to trade Kyle Orton for an OK lineman or a decent draft pick. If so, I think the Cowboys should go for it and make Tanney the No. 2.

They won't be drafting a QB in the first rd unless Romo suffers a career ending injury. This team is so close so if Romo went down for 4 games and Orton had to play and won 2 or more that goes along way period. Also Romo's contract would not allow a first RD pick next year. Why hand out that massive contract just to draft a QB a year later

yeah, can't see Orton going anywhere...he is certainly a well-paid clip board holder, but that same 2-2 that Orton would provide could likely be 1-3 or 0-4 with Tanney in there...he didn't show enough to earn a spot on the 53...I would assume that they are hoping he slides into the PS quietly

Many Nay-sayers out there, but I agree with you 100%. Tanney shows enough promise that if the Cowboys have any confidence whatsoever in their QB coach, they should improve their offensive line and make an Orton trade for a better than average starter. It is what is best for the Cowboys as a team. Secondly, the fact that Romo is a good quarterback is partially credited to him, and his personal dedication, moxie, etc. But a significant part of it is that is the quality coaching he received from Bill Parcells. Dallas needs to invest in a premium quarterback coach.

Ultimately, if the Cowboys DON'T improve their offensive line, they might HAVE to use their backup QB for most of the season.

Who cares about the about the trade,,,,Getting something for Orton and giving him a chance to play is a WIN WIN situation.. IMO. Its not a big deal either way. HOWEVER, if ROMO goes down, and I don't care if its for 1 game or 3 the Cowboys will be in trouble....They will need a mobile QB until the OL can do their job.

Buffalo could be better off picking Tanney up off of waivers. Their possible opening day QB Jeff Tuel (pronounced "tool"), an undrafted free-agent rookie was 4-22 as a starter for Washington State.

With regard to trading them Orton - no way. We don't want to end up like Buffalo.

Tanney had one solid game... I doubt there will be teams rushing to pick him up.

I wonder if the OP knows that we cut Tanney, and therefore renders this nonsense he's spewing pointless?

Tanney fan but you don't want to throw him to the wolves one and two Orton is capable of carrying the team. I don't see him being a Cowboy much longer so mox nix. If he does end up on the PS then great. That's the best place for him if you can keep him there.

Glad your not the owner/GM. That's just outright quitting. Bad mojo.

Totally agree.
