Tanney had one solid game... I doubt there will be teams rushing to pick him up.

Agree....There was a lot QB prospects out there other than Tanny.....Denver cut a #3 QB who they really liked.....and looked better then Tanney in preseason. Dont get all bent around Tanney...He is just one of the many prospect avaialble at this point.....

over Tuel???!

You serious clark?

Tanney is a scrub.

I agree îthe the OAs view. Orton has a decent salary cap hit and let's face it, he lost his job to Tebow when he was starting. That speaks volumes about his ability to lead a team long term.

And Tanney is going to lead the team? Mr 60 something QB rating?

Orton is a BACK UP QUARTERBACK. Who is asking him to lead anything?

Tanney is a dime a dozen. I dont understand the infatuation with him. He isnt from the usual southern homer factory schools that haunt the board. Maybe all of your standards are so low after watching Mcgee for so long.

It's not an infatuation with Tanney, it's has to do with the fact that Dallas should develop a young quarterback who shows potential with GOOD COACHING! Secure a premium quarterbacks coach, and develop a young QB into the Cowboys system. That is the key! I'm sure Garrett can impart some knowledge. Tanney has enough talent to be a good quarterback.

Garrett has never developed a QB and Tanney is almost 26. Not exactly development material after you give Romo that cash.

Move on, this guy isnt very good.

I don't think the popularity of the McGee experiment ever reached an inch outside of the perimeter of Valley Ranch.

FTR, the main part of my idea is moving Orton to the BIlls (or other team) for line help or draft picks. If you would prefer Graham Harrell or someone else rather than Tanney, that's fine, too.

It's amazing how some fans act like the backup QB is just a wasted roster spot. They don't think about the backup QB until they're needed. An experienced backup QB can save your season if you have a good team around them. The 72 Dolphins season was saved by having an experienced backup QB who not only kept the Dolphins afloat but kept them undefeated until Bob Griese returned later that season. In 1991 the Cowboys lost Aikman for 4 games starting in week 13. The Cowboys were 7-5 when Steve Beuerlein took over and led the Cowboys to 4 straight wins to end the 91 season helping the team make the playoffs. He even led the Cowboys to a playoff win over Chicago. In 93 during the NFC title game Aikman suffered a concussion and Bernie Kosar took over and helped save that win for the Cowboys.

Kosar wasn't mobile or athletic he was basically a Kyle Orton clone but he had experience and the moment wasn't too big for him. You can't just assume if Romo goes down it's for the entire season and the season is over. The Cowboys may end up having a pretty good team in 2013 and if let's say Romo were to go down for 4 games in week 12 vs the Giants and are 7-4 they would still have a decent chance of winning 3 of the next 4 games with Orton and making the playoffs. Even if they went 2-2 until Romo's return in week 17 they would still have a good chance to make the playoffs with a win over Philly in the season finale. With the team the Cowboys are probably going to field this season which in my view is an 8 to 10 win team they would have zero chance of surviving 3-4 full games without Romo if they had an inexperienced backup QB who's never started an NFL game.

I respect the opinion. That said, the Dolphins and the 93 Cowboys had gone to the Super Bowl the year before. I would have a different opinion if that were the case for the 2013 Cowboys. It was also pre-cap era for Beurlein and for Morrall. And they all played in a more dangerous era for starting qbs. The reduction in head shots seems to be keeping qbs healthier.

If you read my post I said you can survive with a backup QB for a few games if you have a "good" team around them. For the Cowboys to stay afloat with Orton for a few games their defense is going to have to step up and they're going to need a running game. Orton is not going to fair well if he's having to put the ball up 40+ times. You can't afford to have to play catchup with Orton he's a game manager.
