If the "value" of this draft (outside of say the top 4-5 players) lies in the 20 - 60 pick range then I wouldn't mind to see us trade down initially and then back up later on.

Let's say @ 22 our choices are -

Dwayne Jarrett
Robert Meachem
Dwayne Bowe
Tedd Ginn JR.

Darrell Revis
Chris Houston
Aaron Ross
Eric Wright

Justin Blalock
Ben Grubbs
Aaron Sears

Anthony Spencer
Jarvis Moss

Paul Posluzny
Lawrence Timmons
Patrick Willis

Most of these guys will be sitting there @ 22 and most of them will probably be gone @ 53. I would like to trade around and try to get 3 2nd rd picks and end up with 3 high quality players instead of just taking all 10 picks and hoping the last 4 or 5 picks make the roster.

I'm not saying trade all 10 picks and only have 3. But I would rather have 6 or 7 early instead of just 10 all together.

How do you guys feel?

I agree, and I sure Jerry does too, the trick is parlaying those ten into seven in the top 4-5 rounds. The only real ammunition that we have is our 1st and three 7th rounders. Room to wiggle for sure, but you don't want to trade yourself out of a possible superstar for the sake of picking up 3 JAGs either.

I wouldn't trade our 1st rounder unless we got the other teams #1 and a mid 2nd to early 3rd. Hopefully we can package a couple of those sevens into an extra 4th. You can bet that Jones will wheel and deal on draft day, I just hope he doesn't try and outthink himself and pass on a solid pick for the sake of targeting a guy that is a reach later. I feel good about the fact that we have a solid scout in the fold with Ireland. I think he will do a solid job of keeping Jerry from going off the reservation on draft day.

I'd like to find a way to pick up some extra 2-3 rounders, but with the depth of options in the top 100 or so prospects...I think quite a few teams will have the same intention. It's definitely a possibility, we just have to find the right trading partners.

I agree I wouldn' trade just to trade or pass up a "star" just to garner more picks. Other than Calvin Johnson I'm not sure there are sure bets out there.

I don't know about 3 #2's, but i'd like to get another 3rd. If we can trade down some, still come away with a Spencer/Houston/Jarrett/Staley type player and gain another day 1 pick, that's the way to go. Don't kid yourself, There are going to be some Potentially GREAT players still on the board after 60. WRs like Allison, Paul Williams, Higgins could be there. Maybe DBs like Irons, Rouse, and Wendling. If we get another day 1 pick we might wanna think about another RB if we suspect JJ is gone after 07. Guys like Bush, Irons and Jackson could be around. So i'm all in favor of getting another day 1 pick at the very least.

i would just take revis or houston and we have a cb that will be here for a long time and be a good player. there is a big differense in what you get in rnd 1 and rnd 2. we don't need to out think our selves.we have an older wr corps, our cb's are getting old and our backups are f.a.'s next year and flo is a f.a. next year. we have a better chance of getting a real fix for any of these at 22

Thats what ive been saying hendog, dont trade way down just to get picks, but pick up at least a extra 2nd or 3rd if possible.

like players you mentioned;
Let's say @ 22 our choices are -

Dwayne Jarrett
Robert Meachem
Dwayne Bowe
Tedd Ginn JR.

Darrell Revis
Chris Houston
Aaron Ross
Eric Wright another high 2nd rounder

Justin Blalock
Ben Grubbs
Aaron Sears another high 2nd rounder

Anthony Spencer- i think spencer is a high 2nd rounder
Jarvis Moss

Paul Posluzny
Lawrence Timmons
Patrick Willis

one to two of these player probably will be picked before the 22nd pick, but that still leaves 13 key players, add that to 22nd and you get 35th picks, so in that regards if these players are ranked evenly, trade down just 4-6 spots, not too far and get greedy, but enough to recoup a 3rd rounder, possibly with a 5th rounder thrown in.

i believe all of those players will be there, maybe except for 2. If these players then are of same value on your board, why not trade down 4-5 slots if you get that trade partner, and get at least one more 2nd or 3rd rounder, possibly get a extra 5th in that deal, then you can trade possibly one of those extra 5's and a future 5 to get another 4th rounder.

i am of the mind set also that the cowboys are pretty close in having their roster fully filled, and with flozell adams probably being lost next year, with young mcquistan moving up and probably a good offensive guard or tackle we pick up in the draft this year, we probably can or will get a 3rd round compensatory pick for flozelll next year. so, that means in all likelyhood, we will have a extra 3rd next year.

if you look at our roster, only really old guys we have are greg ellis, flozell adams, riveria, which leonard davis replaces, to, terry glenn and aaron glenn, unless some player falls that the cowboys really love, i am thinking more and more that they will draft either a wr or cb-safety in the draft, to replace aaron glenn, and be prepared to take over for either one of the above mentioned players.

so to gear up for the draft this year, you could if your sure as the cowboys that your going to let flozell go, and not hardly sign any top players next year, that you could pick up a compensatory pick about a 3rd rounder next year, and trade your 3rd next year to get a another good player this year.

thats my take, what do you guys think?

dannyboy, i appreciate your thought, but your dropping way down too far, the key is just drop down 5-6 picks, for a team taht really wants a player, and get that extra 3rd rounder, possibly with a 5th rounder thrown in. You dont want to get too cute, and trade too far down, and lose a good player, he might not be a superstar, either ginn, moss, meachem, bowe, garrett, willis, florida lb, blaylock, grubbs, joe stayley OT, revis, aaron ross, merriweather, nelson, thats 14 players probably in same range, dont trade out of that range, i would say just move down 4-7 picks, so you still get a really good player,

With our roster in such good shape right now, I would even consider trying to trade maybe our 2nd or 3rd this year for a higher rd pick next year. Build up picks for next year- when we will know more about what our young players really can do and who we want to keep and who we want to replace. With such a young roster, you need more time to really evaluate the players.

The most fascinating thing to me is to go back and look at the draft day trades.

For instance, 2004 Atlanta trading their #2 & #3 and the eagles 4th round pick they had acquired to Indianapolis for their #1 and #3.

Who did atlanta get with that third round pick...yep Matt Schaub. and jenkins with the other 1. Now look at the value they got trading schaub.

Or the cowboys in 04 Trading a 7 to tampa for their 7 and darrian barnes. That is the pick we used for crayton. The bucs picked wr mark jones.

most fun part of the draft.

I just figured with the 40th pick, one of the top OL would drop to us and we should be able to get the other two later on in the round
