Player additions are always exciting, but there isn’t anything wrong with being dull.

While everyone here is interested in dissecting Jerry Jones’ comments about adding a “Wow” player to the offense (Why not? It’s the fun of being a fan), the reality is that “Wow” might come in the form of the 22nd or the 28th player in the draft. Given the depth at running back and receiver, and given that players at these positions some times get “underdrafted,” chosen lower than expected, Dallas has a chance to add some “Wow” staying right where it is and picking the best RB/WR available.

Because of the Cowboys’ history, I am not knee jerk averse to a dramatic trade-up. Consider what Tony Dorsett brought to the franchise, and the price was high. John Dutton was an expensive acquisition. So was Too Tall Jones. At times, folks overrate the value of later draft choices, even late first round picks. If a team is really sold on a player – convinced he will be a star – it can be smart to make a move up, even if it’s expensive.

At the same time, given the Cowboys’ needs and the strengths of the upcoming draft, they seem to be in a good position to add talented players who can help early.

I tend to distrust anyone who says a move up would be “stupid,” or anyone who says it would be “stupid” to stand pat. The truth is, it depends on the circumstances. It depends on a team’s assessment of talent and its conviction toward a certain player.

The Cowboys, fortunately, have usually been correct on their more dramatic moves. But I imagine they also have been correct more than once when they did nothing at all.

McFadden is a talented player – dizzyingly talented. Will his game transfer to the NFL? Folks who know a lot more than me get paid to make that assessment. At some point, while it’s great to have opinions and fun to discuss, there is a certain beauty in withholding judgment.

I don’t think JJ ever thought of free agency as the way, in 2008, to add “Wow.” A trade? Maybe. Dallas has accumulated a couple of extra picks, which makes it more likely. A trade-up? It’ll be fun to hide and watch, won’t it?
