I'm thinking about traveling to Oxnard for training camp this year, if I can afford it. I'd like to leave after work on Friday July 29 , from Vancouver, Canada or Bellingham, Washington, and return on Tuesday August 2nd. Do you guys have any suggestions on places to stay, which airport to fly into, ect. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rojan

I just moved to LA and I plan on going as well. Does anyone with experience have any suggestions about how early you should get there to ensure seating?

I've been to Oxnard twice. It gets fairly packed, especially in the evenings, but people are constantly going in and out and you're bound to find a good seat. There's so many drills so you can pick and choose what you want to see. The popular ones are CB/WR. I personally liked to see the Oline square off against Dline.

As for the city, it's pleasant and everyone is nice. I would personally suggest staying somewhere in Oxnard, not in LA or Malibu, obviously. I stayed at the Best Western there for two years in a row. Didn't have a bad experience. However, I know they sell out quickly so if you're interested, I'd book it ASAP. Also take plenty of water. It gets super hot.

If you can fly into Burbank instead of LAX, its ten times easier to deal with and the traffic to Oxnard will be much easier. The hotels in Oxnard aren't much different from each other, but if you haven't been to the area before and don't mind the additional cost you can stay in Santa Barbara and then drive down. Santa Barbara is a great town and a lot of fun, there are great bars and restaurants there once you are done with training camp.

And my experience was like the posters above, you don't really need to worry about seating. I liked to hang out around the railings because you are five feet from the players and hear the banter and the coaching. A couple of years ago I took my oldest son and Scandrick lined up against a WR about three feet from us. A girl (clearly nervous) blurted out "How about an autograph?" Scandrick stayed in his stance, glanced over for second and said "Umm, kinda busy right now....". Everyone laughed, it was funny.

Ok, where to start. I will lead with the flight. I used to live in Bellingham years ago and know the area well. Also, have flown all up and down the coast from various airports. It sounds like you are on a budget, so that leaves flying out of Bellingham or into Burbank out of the question. Those will be almost twice the price. Departing - Vancouver or Seattle(not sure where ya live but assuming somewhere in North Washington). Arrival - LAX......there is also Long Beach or Burbank but again, those are more expensive. LAX isn't that bad, just don't get on the 405 from there, take side streets to get N/NW heading to Oxnard. I have lived in LA on a few different occasions........avoid the 405! Take the scenic route from LAX to Santa Monica on the PCH all the way up to Oxnard, try to steer clear of the 101 if possible.

Now, try to stay somewhere off the 101N near Oxnard/Ventura or Santa Barbara. I have gone to many practices from as far as Long Beach........the drive isn't far but can be painful due to traffic.

As for camp, I rarely got there earlier than an hour before. If you absolutely have to have seats, get there 2-3 hours before. But, people are always on the move and you may want to as well. I like being on the backside of field #1, way too crowded on the near side as you walk in.

Going in, parking isn't bad as it moves pretty good because people are arriving at different times. But leaving, head out about 30 minutes before practice is done to avoid long delays. Oh, also do not wash your rental car, waste of time.....always muddy cus they spray the parking lot(mostly dirt).

If you have a free day and want to see something different, head to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. It is not too far and you can stay out of LA until ya have to fly out. It is amazing

Feel free to ask me any other questions regarding LA and camp.........
