Troy Aikman's profile of a head coach

I was yakking with Fox's Troy Aikman this morning about a bunch of stuff I hope to include in my Saturday Hot Air column. The conversation got around to NFL head coaches. Here's who he would hire if he was starting a team.

"The first criteria would be that he would have to be able to stand in front of 53 guys and command the room. If he couldn't, I wouldn't hire him. It wouldn't matter if he was the greatest defensive coordinator or offensive coordinator of all time. If he couldn't command the room, he couldn't be my coach."

So who does Aikman like?

"I'm a Bill Parcells guy. I like Mike Holmgren . I like Mike Shanahan. I like Jimmy Johnson...It's like at home. I don't ask my daughters to clean their room. I tell them."

So I asked Aikman his thoughts on the unemployed Shanahan and Holmgren.

"I have as much respect for them as any coaches in the league," he said. "I think they are incredible. I think my only question for each would be, 'Does he still have a passion for the game?" That would be more so for Holmgren than Shanahan. He was just fired. He has something to prove. If I was satisfied with the answer, I'd hire them in a New York minute."

While we're on the subject, I think Brett Favre would make an amazing offensive coordinator for the WCO one day.

Jason Garrett doesn't have enough coaching experience but Aikman does?

Troy gets it. I couldn't agree more.

I never said JG didn't have enough experience..I just would trust Troy more than him. Much like I did when they were our QB's in the glory days.

It aint gonna happen Showalter. If Troy could come into the locker room per an invitation from Jones to talk about leadership, discipline, and the little things that matter in order to put a winner on the field, then fine he would be a good speaker in that respect. But he is a broadcaster now. That's just not something I think Troy would do in this day and age. Remember Jones cut Troy Aikman in 2001 after the debacle of the 2000 season. There is no way I see Troy as a coach on the sideline. His life is peachy enough standing next to Joe Buck broadcasting as the #1 FOX team.

Aikman also knows how much work is involved with being a HC. That guy is too busy with other things in his life to take on the job. Besides, he has no experience.

If we get a new coach, he has to be able to turn this around FAST. We have a window with some of our core players. We cannot afford to wait too long on this or it will be a total rebuilding project.
