He said something interesting. He didn't retire because of concussions, he did it because of his degenerative back. I didn't know that.

I heard him say that shortly after he retired. Most pointed to the concussion but it was the back problems he was facing that caused him big problems He was getting the maximum cortisone treatments for his back and it was not helping him much

The concussions would have eventually done him in IMO. They were becoming far too common.

Seems everyone thinks that. I have to argue with hordes of ppl. every year over that point. Most fans don't have a clue about why he retired. It was also because we had no talent, so why keep paying Troy so much and have another operation if we can't compete. Hate to harp on the average fan, but they are so clueless about most topics with football because they won't do any homework or reading and just repeat what they hear from others and crap from like ESPN. It's amazing how many ppl. don't even realize there's a salary cap and how it works, that point is going to give me a stroke one day from disbelief.

a degenerative back is a pre-existing condition, not something you usually get hurt over if i understand it. it just breaks down sooner and can't stand the strain like others can.

I remember early in his career there was talk his back might cause him to retire after only a few years. I'm a little surprised he was able to last as long as he did.

Yes, I knew that. Troy makes it a point to be very clear about that.

But I think the guy is totally delusional in thinking he could've played on if his back had been healthy. He'll tell you that concussions do not happen more easily or frequently just because you had one or more before. But if you chart his career they kept getting more and more frequent. It seemed towards the end that he got symptoms much more easily.

I have never understood how he could continue to calim that it wasn't an increasing concern for him. Clearly IMO, it should have been.

Its why I think Westbrook is done for all intents & purposes. Portis too. Once RB's start getting multiple incidents. I think its over. They're too much in the line of fire.

I always find it crazy that Aikman and Favre came into the leauge only two years apart. Seems like Aikman has been out of it forever. I have absolutely no point, just saying.

And you know his body better then him? He has said numerous time, that Back issues almost made it impossible for him to play with. His concussions were not the bigger issue. Sure if he didn't have back issues and he had played on, maybe concussions would have forced him out.

But primary reason he hung up, according to him is his back. And he says it continues to be a problem every so often.

I'm not debating which was worse - his back or concussions. I'm only saying that he was kidding himself to think he could have played on given his concussion situation. He kept claiming he was no more susceptible all the while he kept having them more frequently and from lesser impacts. You simply couldn't count on him playing 16 games.

He wouldn't be the first athlete to live in a form of denial.

Imagine how many championships we would have won if Favre and not Aikman was our QB.

I remember Troy's last couple of seasons... The back problems made him barely mobile which definitely contributed to the increasing number of headshots and other big hits he took.

His first couple of years he was almost a mobile QB... LOL

Everytime Troy mentions his back, I immediately remember back to a Thanksgiving game against the then Houston Oilers with a young McNair and Eddie George in the lineup.

Troy's back acted up during warmups/stretching and he could barely move without assistance. The trainers took him to the locker room, albeit slowly, and shot his back full of cortizone. If my memory serves me right, the Oilers had the ball first and Troy had not came back to the sidelines. I can't remember if the Oilers scored or punted the ball away, but Troy jogged back to the sidelines just before the offense took the field.

He looked completely stiff...completely uncomfortable...completely in pain. He could barely toss the ball to warm up, yet he took the field with the offense. He drove them all the way down the field, but his follow through was non-existant and a pass got away from him in the red zone. The pass was intercepted and nothing but green was in front of the Oiler who made the play. Troy ran the guy down and shoved him out of bounds. He landed on his back and I could tell he might not get up for a long time.

This may have been just another play, but it's one of the many reasons why Troy Aikman is and always will be my favorite player in the NFL. What an incredibly tough player who expected nothing but the best from himself and those around him.

If anyone has this footage (stargazer maybe?), I'd love to have it.

That's not true. Well, it can be true, but it certainly is not always the case. Everyone has degeneration with aging, but injuries definitely play a role. And degeneration can be stopped and reversed.

A lot of cortisone probably doesn't help. Sure it may help any swelling and give injuries time to heal, but if you're going out and playing football all the time it's not going to heal, and then the cortisone is just going to cause further degeneration.

I had an injury in my neck that caused me to have chronic neck sprain/muscle spasm, and as a result my neck got severely degenerated and the pain caused me to miss about 1/3 of the days at work this past year. I'm finally on some good medication and getting decent treatment (work comp sucks!) and was able to work a full week for the first time since September last week.
