From ESPN, Clayton's mailbag

1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers:
Opposing quarterbacks completed 66.2 percent of their throws for 7.71 yards per attempt in 2013, despite the Bucs' additions of Dashon Goldson and Darrelle Revis to the secondary. The problem was up front. Tampa Bay had only 23 sacks in the 408 times opposing quarterbacks dropped back to throw against the Bucs' subpackage. Lovie Smith should fix that with former Bengal Michael Johnson rushing from defensive end and McDonald as an inside tackle. Those two additions should take some blocking pressure off Adrian Clayborn and Da'Quan Bowers, who can rotate at end on the other side of Johnson

Isn't this true for Dallas D too, if we didn't have 3rd and 4th stringers on line we should be able to be better.

at some point someone has be in last place, that is said of every team. But no, Dallas had more problems than just injuries, how many teams had a demarcus ware and hatcher? How many teams did more with less?

I think so.

Hopefully there's at least some cumulative upgrade up front.

I'm not sure many teams even had less than we did defensively last year. Which DLs you taking the Cowboys' 2013 line over?

Hatcher never came close to the year he had last year. What are you saying that Ware did last year or for that matter the last couple of years.
He was good but...There were few teams last year with less, come on?

Yeah, a good chunk the defensive disaster last year was Monty crawling into a shell, if we played all season like the last game we would have been somewhat better.

the D was decent in the beginning of the year, the injuries piled up, the opponent's yards from scrimmage piled up...need a pass rush and we won't be near the bottom third of the league in yards allowed

Early in the year? They gave up at least 30 in 3 of the first 5 games.

I chalk that up, to some degree, on learning a new system...not trying to say that the D was even remotely passable for much of the year, just that if healthy, they could be OK

im not taking to many of course the easy ones, but i think for last year id take a few coaches over what we had. Tho id probably take the bengals and even the jets Dl over ours. That aside, was i happy for the changes, yes, would i have expected it to be that bad, no, good it did good it did not? well i didnt expect anything from last year and was correct, so doesnt matter but im glad to see Rod in charge now.

ware was still better than average, yes easier to contain and yes i hated watching him run by qbs and no im not sad hes gone, but id still put him on my team if giving the chance, Dallas ruined it more for him than his body did for him. Say what you will but a hurt ware is better than what other player of other teams were doing, the reality is most teams put their players in a place of strength, we ddint do that so much.

The thing about the defense...and I guess most defenses...is being consistent. I actually think this unit could be pretty good, there were times that it flashed last year, but whether they can play well consistently - even for entire games - remains to be seen.

The main point is there were few teams with less talent then Dallas.

Thats true and they did more than Dallas, dallas had more problems than just average talent and injuires. Its nice when ESPN gives us opinions, but some of us do think of other things. IM not saying you personally but ive seen some run with ESPN verbage or ideas.

I guess that's the key , even an average def , consistently gives up 20-24 points can do wonders , with our offense can be expected to put atleast that many points. We can't have games like GB and Detroit - ridiculous 5-600 yard games

Lot of things we shouldnt be doing, but are, a few things the organization is hopefully doing right as well. The problem is Garrett has to prioritize and im hoping thats what Rod will do and Linehan. Simple easy stuff, take your best defensive line man "hit the qb", take your best WR, get the ball" start going back to things that work for us.
