Ranking the TV moms in honor of Mother's Day:

1. Olivia Walton: Raising all those kids during the Great Depression and having a crabby mother-in-law looking over your shoulder all the time couldn't have been easy.

2. June Cleaver: A little naive and sheltered, but always had a wholesome, warm meal on the table and managed to always look nice (strand of pearls 24-7).

3. Edith Bunker. All I can say is bless her sweet heart.

Least-favorite: Claire Huxtable: Rarely home, pretentious, sassy and a nag. The ultimate was when Cliff would be in the kitchen making his own meal (and taking care of the kids) and she would come home and chastise him for not staying on his diet.

I should add Caroline Ingalls to my list. Beauty and grace mixed with the toughness that pioneer women had to have.

...Maude? I preferred the the mother from the Munsters. She had that exotic Elvira feel.

OK first of all where do you get Mrs Brady as a great mom heck the Maid did all the mothers work.

My top TV mom would have to be

Caroline Ingles enough said. She was the greatest.

Now this woman wasn't a mom on tv per se but she sure did a good job.
Aunt Bee from Andy Griffith show.

On Mrs Brady . If I was a teenage boy I would not have had any trouble having her as the step mother who gave her all for the cause of those awkward teen years...
We at least know she kept Greg happy and speeded up his learning curve

Interesting thread. I want to add a couple of candidates from an often forgotten segment, single Moms trying to support their kids and raise them right.

1. Florida Evans, "GoodTimes." The show wasn't as entertaining after James was killed off, but her wisdom and values never wavered.

2. Anne Romano, "One Day at a Time." Two teenage girls isn't easy.

3. Alice Hyatt, "Alice." Teenage sons aren't much easier.

4. Grace Kelly, "Grace Under Fire." Three kids really isn't easy.

Salute to the single moms who shun welfare and raise their kids against all odds.

My all time favorite TV mom will always be Laura Petrie, "The Dick Van Dyke Show."

You liked MTM even though she never slept in the same bed as Dick? How did they ever have Robbie?

You forgot Carmela as a good tv mom. There was also Mrs C

Interesting, the woman you liked the least is the one closest to the modern-day woman.

There's nothing in any of the Cosby show that suggested she didn't prepare dinner, take care of the kids, or any of the other motherly duties. But since the show was so Cosby-centric, you saw a more evolved Father who was comfortable caring for the kids and household when his woman was away, rather than a harassed do-it-all woman.

Just my take on it.

Hos, I liked all your selections... Funny how all those shows were all my favs during their original runs...and now I watch search for their re-runs.

Worst TV Mom...I didn't care much for Roseanne, tho I can't seem to not watch her show.

Probably not the best mom, but hilarious nonetheless. Classic show!

Yep, I prefer the more old-fashioned types, I guess.

I think I know what you're thinking. No, I'm not one of those guys that sits on his butt and expects the wife to wait hand-and-foot. I did at least half of our cooking, cleaning and probably did more diaper-changing and baby-sitting than she did.

I did my share and more. Ideally, I think, it's best for the kids if mom can stay home with them. Financially, however, that's impossible for a lot of folks, including us.

It was more Claire Huxtable's attitude that I didn't like.

Nothing wrong w/that preference, just thought it was interesting that of all the TV moms you liked, she seemed to be so opposite in comparison to the others you mentioned.

I honestly never thought anything one way or the other about how you operate in real life. I know that while some may wish for the days like the one you suggested, it just seems that today's households require that everyone needs to work in and out of the house to make it run functionally.

And since I'm not married, I'll never judge how someone actually runs their household. Cuz what works for some, doesn't work for others.

It was more Claire Huxtable's attitude that I didn't like.
Funny, I never got a negative vibe about her attitude. Maybe the show was designed to portray her as the classy, together career woman. I think if there was any kinda failure on the show's part is showing more of her in the traditional role to balance it out. But again as I mentioned earlier, the show was very Cosby-centric. It was geared to show his relationships and role in the household as father and husband.

Wasn't his office in their basement? If so of course he was around more than Claire. I always liked her but it was because of her looks :D. I had a Spanish teacher that looked like her.

I'm a huge Bill Cosby fan and I guess it always rubbed me the wrong way when she would wag her finger and lecture him about his diet. It inevitably happened when he was in the kitchen making a sandwich or a "bacon-burger dog." It's probably just a guy sticking up for a guy.

Bill, no doubt, was the focus of the show, and maybe in some subtle way, he liked being portayed as the more sympathetic figure. It worked for me.
